For the past 20 years I’ve worked with several attorneys at HAFLAW and experienced consistently outstanding legal help in such varied areas as the sale of my company, real estate closings and tenant evictions. All their attorneys are focused, very professional, efficient and pleasant to work with. I strongly recommend them.

I wouldn't use this Law Firm, in the beginning they were very friendly and helpful .. I went with the lawyer's advice instead of my own and he wrote a letter to a different lawyer which was no longer than six lines and charged me over 200$ and that letter did nothing. But waist time ..my lawyer was just hoping for some lawyer courtesy between the both of them I guess . and I guarantee he didn't even write it. Then they offer a paralegal service but it's more to just get you in the door because the paralegal can't do anything without the lawyers approval so then you're paying the lawyer also so you might as well just get a lawyer rather than paying a paralegal also. (the paralegal was extremely friendly and helpful) she's the only reason I give it two stars if it wasn't for her I would give it a negative Star. And I would say the lawyer had a rude and entitled attitude and if you didn't follow what he wanted to do he seemed to dismiss what you were asking. All I wanted to do was put my dads estate in Probate and I could have saved hundreds of dollars if he just did what I asked instead of some kind of letter and fee on top of fee to pick up the phone from the other attorney. And then when I asked for my retainer back they inflated charges by adding some kind of goodbye letter to me. so it went over the retainer and then told me they were giving me a break on thoes charges because they know I don't have a lot of money and just making my balance zero... .thx... at the end I feel somewhat taken advantage of And led-on because I live out of state..

Attorney Michael Devlin has represented my company for over 2 decades mainly in the area of labor and employment law but has also provided counsel in other areas. As the President & CEO of a mid-sized company legal counsel is a continual requisite and Attorney Devlin provides it second to none. He is easily accessible and has an uncanny memory for minute details which often are the decisive elements. Attorney Devlin interacts well with our entire team and has become an invaluable asset to our company. I would recommend Attorney Devlin to anyone in need of a competent, fair priced and results oriented labor/employment attorney.

Attorney Devlin has represented my company in the area of employment law for the past 15 yrs or more. As SVPHR for a major consumer packaged goods company, I have found Attorney Devlin to be a highly competent employment lawyer, offering expert legal advice with a practical, hands on approach. He is an excellent resource in brainstorming over sensitive employee relations matters, and in more formal litigation procedures, can be counted on to be thoroughly prepared, super skilled in depositions and other discovery proceedings, and readily available. Lastly, I have always appreciated the fact that Attorney Devlin has never "overlawyered" any situation that I have utilized his services for.

Rachel is a very understanding, confident person and will fight for you. I hired her in 2012 for divorce case and custody of minor children and Don’t regret. I’m so happy I found someone who I can trust to the point I forget she’s my attorney, she’s like a friend, she listens to you and puts herself in your situation. I recommend her highly. I hope this review helps someone in need of a great attorney.

I originally sought a divorce/separation consultation from Attorney Crane and due to her complete honest feedback and well thought out options I decided on hiring her. She was a beacon of hope to my family at a time when our options appeared limited and the likelihood of a satisfactory resolution seemed next to impossible. Attorney Crane was extremely thorough, very persistent in achieving a positive resolution, diligently research focused, fair priced, goal oriented, and always provided timely and honest feedback and answers to all my questions. Not only did she provide an outstanding service where I was able to accomplish a desired result for me and my family during my time of need, uncertainty, and heartache, but she was able to defend me from unjust accusations as well. Her calm, professional and empathetic demeanor offered emotional support and hope to myself and those I care about most. My children and I are eternally grateful for her service and I sincerely trust her with any legal need as well as the lives of me and my and children. I highly recommend Attorney Crane without reservation.

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Milford, Connecticut?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
