Melissa is absolutely the best disability attorney anyone could ask for to help them navigate the complicated process of SSDI. Not only is she extremely knowledgeable and professional, but she has a genuine compassion for her clients. She understood that I was going through an unexpectant life altering change and at times, I was unable to focus or compose myself. Melissa was caring and patient with me and put me at ease. She explained how to fill out the paperwork and took the time to review each of the questions with me. She was extremely responsive and always available to answer any questions I had. It is because of her expertise that I was approved. I would highly recommend Melissa for anyone looking a highly competent and emphatic attorney. Thank you, Melissa, for all of your hard work and diligence.

Melissa is one of the kindest, greatest, most helpful person I’ve ever had the chance to talk to. After having a horrible year last year and finally getting my notice about my disability coverage. I fell into a pretty bad depression, but Melissa was so kind to me and was able to appeal it and I got approved, I went through a pretty traumatic experience and lost my hearing, along with a whole list of other problems and thought applying for disability was such a hassle. I was so happy she cared so much to do her best to help me get approved. Thank you Melissa! Thank you so much! She even helped me with my total disability problems, she knew what papers I needed, along with any questions I may have had. Such a helpful person for those in need. I know If I run into any future problems I will go here first.

I worked closely with Atty. Nugent and his team. From the initial phone call I knew that my case would be handled in the most professional manner. Atty. Nugent and team got to know me and my husband. Atty. Nugent and everyone on his team are very knowledgeable, caring and they kept me informed. I wish we could have met them under different circumstances, but I’m so glad we know them now. They handled my case as if we were a close family friend!

Attorney Melissa Buckley is an angel! My brother has been fighting for disability for 7 years. Appeal after appeal until he called Buckley & Buckley. Melissa got him an approval in 7 months on the first try! Previous attorneys did little to no work to prepare his case, and didn’t even return his calls. Melissa was dedicated, knowledgeable, and kept us well informed! She returned our calls right away and answered any questions we had! We highly recommend her! Melissa, our family is very grateful. On behalf of Gerald S.

Bruce was wonderful to work for closing on our new home. We were recommended to Bruce through a friend and are so glad we found him. From the first phone call, Bruce was friendly and personable. He really just made you feel comfortable in the process. As first time home buyers, we were a bit anxious and had plenty of questions, and Bruce always had the answer - along with a calm demeanor that let you know everything was all right. He is always responsive and readily available, and will help guide your through every step of the process. We closed on time, and are now happily getting settled into our new home. Thank you again, Bruce, for all of your help. We could not have asked for a better lawyer. To those reading this, Bruce is one of the best - you won't be disappointed in your choice to work with him.

I was very happy with the way my case was handled as well as the support and advice I got from Attorney McCoy. He handled my case with amazing expertise. I was referred to him from another lawyer who did not handle trials. Attorney McCoy knew his way around the court and it showed with the result he was able to obtain for me.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of New Haven, Connecticut?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
