My mom died recently and I needed a lawyer to help me to settle her estate. I met Attorney Scott Sawyer on the advice of my real estate agent. Attorney Sawyer and his staff were fantastic to deal with. He had all the necessary papers for me to pre sign when the house finally sold and then conducted the closing without me even having to be there. Within a few days of the closing he wired the money to my account, filed the proper paperwork with the probate court and even paid one of my mother’s bills for me using money he held over from the closing. His staff is super organized, on top of everything, responsive to emails and phone calls and at the same time sensitive to me losing someone that was important. I'm so happy with the service that I received. If you're reading this because you're looking for an attorney I can honestly recommend attorney Sawyer.

In my experience, Sawyer Law Firm is truly a cut above the rest. I needed assistance with a real estate closing, and their team, especially Scott, provided a seamless and professional service that I hadn't encountered before with other firms. From the outset, their communication was stellar. Every question I had was answered promptly and thoroughly, alleviating my stress during a typically complex process. What impressed me most was the way Scott went above and beyond to ensure everything was in order. Scott's calm demeanor, coupled with his vast knowledge and meticulous attention to detail, made the entire process feel straightforward. I never felt in the dark or confused, a testament to Scott's exceptional client service. I can't recommend Sawyer Law Firm enough. They've earned a five-star rating from me, without question. Their blend of professionalism, communication, and client care is unparalleled. For anyone needing legal assistance, look no further than Sawyer Law Firm.

I've had the chance to work with numerous law firms over the years, but my experience with Sawyer Law Firm stands head and shoulders above the rest. They assisted me in navigating a complex personal injury case with compassion, professionalism, and expertise that was second to none. Scott, in particular, was a breath of fresh air. His approach was far from the aggressive lawyer stereotype, and instead, he offered calm, measured guidance that was invaluable in an overwhelming situation. His meticulous attention to detail was evident as he combed through my case, liaising with medical professionals and expert witnesses to build a comprehensive claim. What I appreciated the most was the seamless communication. Despite his busy schedule, Scott was always accessible, providing regular updates on the case's progress, and answering any questions promptly, even outside typical business hours. Sawyer Law Firm sets itself apart with its personal approach to cases. I truly felt as though Scott had a personal investment in my situation, not treating it as just another case file. This emotional commitment resulted in a successful claim that covered all my expenses and compensated for my pain and suffering. In comparison to other firms I've dealt with, Sawyer Law Firm easily earns a five-star rating. The exceptional blend of empathy, dedication, and legal acumen sets them apart. I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone in need of legal representation. Their level of service is simply unparalleled.

Sometimes in this world we come across people who have no business being in their line of profession for one reason or another but Mr Albin is exactly where he should be, in a position to help those less fortunate. He didn't treat me as if I was beneath him but more so as an equal but above that, the level of compassion that this attorney has for people is unmatched, he truly cares about people. After hanging up with this office and finding out that solely due to my geographical location, I didn't qualify for their help, I received a phone call by the same number that I had just called, It was Mr Albin, he informed me that he would try to get special permission to help us tenants all being mass evicted from a local hotel, he didn't get that permission but he gave me his cell phone number and allowed me to call an text him whenever we needed and If I had any questions and of course I did. Mr Albin's help was invaluable and it meant the world to me. Attorney Albin wouldn't just tell me what to do or give me advice but would instead send me related case law which taught me a wealth of information, educating and mentoring me throughout our entire interaction and if he ever reads this, I'm sure he will let me know of any spelling or grammar issues lol. Words cannot express thoroughly enough the admiration I have for this gentleman who helped us when he didn't have to. I'm incredibly thankful to know him. Thank you Attorney Albin, thank you for being you.

Tom is a very competent and thorough lawyer! He looked at my file and went about it in a completely different manner than I had my previous 2 attempts/denials. He knew exactly what was needed to win my case, and he knew exactly what the judge wanted to hear. Tom also is very professional and personal, he will make you feel very at ease. He walked me through the hearing making me feel very comfortable and not so humiliated! We together covered every aspect of my situations through the hearing and when it was over, I was very confident that we had won the case. Which is exactly what happened. If you have filed for disability and were denied then Tom is your man! He will turn your case into a winning case! I can not Thank Tom enough! Thank you Tom, for everything!

I was referred to Mike by another attorney, that was not able to help me. Not only did he contact me in a matter of minutes, he took the time to consult with me, and gave me advice, for over half an hour, even though my case was too small for his firm to take on. I would absolutely recommend him!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of New London, Connecticut?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
