Jill is Smart, high level and stays on track. She is not in the fray and does not pit spouses against each other to pay her rent, she just wants to get the job done. I would recommend Jill.

Jill represented me on a case in 2010 and again with my divorce in 2020. The 2020 divorce began with me asking Jill for guidance given my suspicions of infidelity on behalf of my then husband. Jill advised me to hire a private investigator whom she had worked with in prior cases. The details from that investigation led to my then husbands admissions of infidelity in a deposition, all in a quick two month time period. Jill pushed me when I needed to be pushed, and guided me on how to live my life with my ex during the divorce process and then the subsequent pandemic. I needed someone strong and powerful on my team to fight for my future and the future of my two small boys. We are now on the other side of the divorce and I was able to move to another state and have the parenting schedule that worked best for my boys. I would recommend Jill and team to anyone - whether they have questions on "what if" or have a "simple" divorce, or extremely complicated, as mine was. You want Jill on your team!

I met Jill about three years ago and hired her to represent me in a very painful divorce. There are almost no words to describe this experience- in the midst of a sad, horrible, and surprising divorce, Jill was a godsend. She is patient, very smart, kind hearted, very honest, and most important, she is an incredible lawyer. Throughout my process, which did include multiple hearings, and a trial, Jill was a voice of reason and a constant source of help and comfort to me. Jill was never unreachable- on holidays and her own personal days, she was never unavailable. She was truly committed to helping me every step of the way. Jill is excellent at complex financial matters and custody situations. On top of that, the entire staff at Schoonmaker, George, & Blomberg operates as a unit and this contributes to the excellent work and legal counsel Jill provides. Jill Blomberg did a tremendous job representing me. During the saddest days of my life, she worked tirelessly for me and I will be grateful forever.

We worked with Jon on a recent home closing. To say that we could not have gotten it done without him is not an exaggeration. He went above and beyond, tackling a number of 11th hour complications, all the while keeping me sane every time something came up in the weeks leading up to the close as well as subsequent to that. If you are looking for a real estate attorney who is highly competent, trustworthy, willing to work through complex issues, and an all-around great person, you have found your guy.

I had a wonderful experience with Jon and his team on both the purchase and sale of a house in 2022. Jon is highly professional and did a great job of knowing and explaining the market expectation of buyers and sellers at the time. His edits to the contracts helped to both protect me, and ensure there was not a ton of redlining and edits delaying the signings. Jon and his team made the process painless, I will use them again

Steve represented us when we purchased our first home last yr. He was knowledgeable, responsive, and patient. Opposing counsel was extraordinarily difficult to deal with, and he handled a particularly frustration situation with the utmost professionalism, while looking out for our best interests at every turn. He promptly responded to calls and emails, and I felt comfortable raising any question I had with him. I expected our fees to be considerably more than they ultimately were due to the complexity and length of our process. We were grateful to have Steve in our corner. I highly recommend him.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Old Greenwich, Connecticut?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
