Pros
1
Excellent attorney who effectively resolves client issues
“Greg took my case when many other attorneys turned it down. He is an excellent attorney who swiftly resolved my issue to get back my security deposit which the landlord(apartment community) wrongfully withheld.”
2
Knowledgeable and patient in explaining the process
“Mr. Carnese is a very kind, attentive, and extremely knowledgeable attorney. He listened to every word I had to say, and was patient with his explanations of the step-by-step process that would take place with my case.”
3
Fights hard for clients and their interests
“Attorney Carnese has helped me with a divorce as well as with my job, helping patients with personal injury cases. He is great at laying out your options and making the law simple to understand. He is also not afraid to fight for my patients when needed.”
4
Excellent communicator and responsive
“Greg always gives 110% for all of his clients. "The shorelines choice for leagal services"”
5
Provides valuable guidance and support
“I can't thank Greg enough for guidance he gave me during a heated custody issue. While I wound up going Pro Se due to scheduling (this was a fault on my end not Gregs I waited till the last possible minute to find a lawyer). He worked with me multiple times to formulate legally what I was trying to do. He also helped reframe how I thought about the evidence I had in a way that helped me a lay person, present everything to the court in a digestible way.”
Cons
1
Upfront fees and communication could be improved
“Pretty much here's the deal with this law firm. Unless you want to do work up front, emails, text, recipes YUP, YOU have to prove to this Attorney that you have a case. HE will not speak to you over the phone for more than a few minutes. In fairness to him the poor man did just return from vacation.šŸ™„ Mr. Carnese did however immediatelly state that he charges $350 an hour. He was abrupt, rude and one of the most unprofessional lawyers I've ever spoke too.”
2
Lack of responsiveness and unwillingness to assist
“Just wanted to take a moment to update my review, I almost lost my son because of this piece of human garbage. DO NOT RETAIN HIS SERVICES. Please do the world a favor and kill yourself greg.”

Jane Cable has handled many different types of legal business issues for me and in other situations provided sage advice and guidance. She has the ability to diagnose the situation and present simple sane solutions to prevent things from getting out of hand, which could result in problem situations and huge legal fees.

I'm so glad I hired Attorney Votto for an atypical real estate transaction involving a bill of sale for the home, sitting on land owned by an LLC. Alarmed that I almost turned down the optional 50-year land lease (for 6% of the home purchase price), she outlined the tremendous risk I'd be exposed to without the lease--because there was no alternative shorter lease option. With no lease to the land on which my house sits, I could be denied access to my home, forced to move it, or have my home insurer reject a liability claim from an accident in the yard. Yet many homeowners in the community opt not to spring for the 50-year lease, my real estate agent said; those buyers apparently weren't warned as passionately or at all about the dangers of going lease-less by their lawyers. Indeed, Attorney Votto knows many area realtors and is involved in writing the exams for them. She went the extra mile and even warned my realtor against assuring buyers that they don't really need the optional lease.

I recently had the pleasure of working with Ms. Votto in purchasing a parcel of land. From our first interaction, it was evident to me that she was well-versed in her craft. Ms. Votto and her team were responsive, thorough, and took the time to explain each step of the process so I understood what was happening. Iā€™d highly recommend Attorney Votto, and I look forward to working with her again in the future!f

Ms. Votto's vast Real Estate knowledge and experience were enormously helpful getting through our closing. We chose to sign documents in her office because the buyers of our home were busy with selling a home and buying ours and not as attentive to our travel plans as they could be. A mortgage which was had paid off on our property came up in the title search and Ms. Votto's office is working diligently to see to it that this does not impede the actual closing this coming Monday.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Old Lyme, Connecticut?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
