I needed to have someone look at a contract I drafted up to make sure the terms specified were fair and understandable to both parties. After reviewing the the document and going over it line by line, amending it where needed, I was left with a contract I felt comfortable signing. The whole process was quick and painless, would highly recommend Kent Miller for document review.

As a former client of Mr. Nicola, my partner asked that he represent her for an upcoming closing on an investment property that she had just purchased Unfortunately, her experience with him & his paralegal, was frustrating, disappointing, & wholly disturbing The vast majority of emails & requests for help, guidance, were ignored & went without answers, guidance or help That lack of responsiveness she/we found not only disturbing, but unprofessional And when she did get a reply, on several occasions she got a response, either from his paralegal Agnes, or from Robert ( Nicola), it was all too often rude & dismissive, essentially saying, in effect, it was up to her to handle, leaving her with a clearly though not directly stated message of… not my problem, you figure it out, & don’t bother me. And on one such occasion, Mr Nicola lashed out at her broker, who worked tirelessly on our behalf, telling her, when she questioned if &/or how he would handle or suggest the handling of a situation, that…. “You are being paid a 5% commission ( which she promptly replied to saying she was not getting 5%), & therefore, she should be doing “”it” ( to earn her commission) To repeat Unethicaľ, rude, unnecessary, unprofessional Another example of the arrogance of rudeness demonstrated by Mr Nicola For a variety of reasons, the circumstances ( before clising) presented many challenges & raised many questions To that end, on one occasion when we were granted an opportunity to speak with Mr Nicola, a number of steps were outlined as to how to proceed After repeated questions we raised to clarify our understanding, Mr Nicola said: “I don’t understand what else I can tell you or why you don’t understand. I have spent 32 minutes of my time” In addition, at the outset of our agreement to work together, she was sent a list of all items that would have to be paid by closing This included his written & our mutually agreed upon attorneys fees of $1500 Within the past week, prior to closing, she was sent a revised list of closing fees, which had risen to $3500 There were no discussions or documents listing any additional services &/or fee structure for any such services Nor, of course did she sign or verbally agree to anything over & above the initially agreed upon fee for services for $1500 When she reached out in an email stating that, & further stating that she felt the fees were exorbitant & unfair, given what she explained as referenced above, that email was as well unanswered & therefore ignored On the day before closing, we sent an email requesting an itemized listing of fees & services to get an explanation of how the fee ( which we paid at closing) went from $1500 to $3500 That email, like so many before, was ignored Thankfully the closing was today & was successfully completed For that she is & we are a thankful However, it should not have been so distasteful And so, obviously, she/we am so disappointed & feeling taken advantage of, & dismissed Lastly she hired a professional as her advocate, “ partner” & resource Sadly, instead, see was left feeling alone & had to “figure it out on her own” Clearly, however competent, experienced & knowledgeable Mr Nicola may be, his lack of responsiveness, courtesy, & respect to his (paying) client, all stated above, leads her to state regret for having hired & paid, even overpaid him and I will NEVER again entertain consideration of working with him again To that end, we would also WARN anyone against using him!!!

I used Joe for 2 closings - one sale, one purchase and one refinance. He is very hands on and easy to communicate with, he provided his cell phone if I had any questions after hours. I cannot say how wonderful hi all staff is and everyone stayed after hours on December 31st to help me finalize the closing when the bank delayed the paperwork . Will recommend him to anyone.

I was very please with the level of professionalism and service Attorney Matthew Hirsch and his team provided on my medical malpractice case. He was very thorough and handles with great care all the detail of the case. He is very knowledgeable on the technical aspect of the law, he also understands the psychological importance of how the case is argued and presented during the trail. He personally worked me through of the different steps a case like mine goes through, and prepared me on what to expect. He kept me well informed on the status of the case as well as the strategy he was pursuing. What impressed me the most with Matthew was the fact he values greatly his clients’ opinion and addresses all concerns promptly and thoroughly. I highly recommend Attorney Matthew Hirsch.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Trumbull, Connecticut?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
