You are better having no representation than Caryl Balskus. She is useless and will cave in at an instance, but charge you at top dollar, 1 minute rounded up to her 20 minutes, 21 minutes rounded up to an hour. You will end up losing in litigation, while paying her more. Avoid her at all costs. Literally.

Caryl doesn’t play dirty. She is honest and plays by her own book. She took control and solved my divorce in 4 months( no kids involved). Caryl did a stellar job for me.

Mark Leighton and Louise DePlante were both professional and made the long legal process of my case a more bearable situation. My questions and concerns were always handled quickly, I was updated regularly regarding the case, and they added a personal touch that made it easier to be patient and wait for the legal processes along the way. I would highly recommend Mark Leighton and his team to anyone who needs a workers compensation lawyer.

James Katz was my lawyer for a very difficult divorce. He is very professional and managed to get everything I asked for, and more. Most lawyers wouldn't have even attempted to win my specific case, but he knew when to push and when to wait. It was a long and very contentious divorce that took over a year to complete. He made the process so much easier by explaining all the options and taking the time to listen to what I wanted to accomplish for me and my children, and he got the job done. Even today, several years later, his office was very courteous and helpful when I needed some copies of my divorce decree and didn't even charge me for their time. I highly recommend James Katz for anyone who needs an attorney. James and his entire team has been very supportive and professional during one of the most difficult times of my life.

I've have used Attorney Katz as my sole lawyer since 2010. Words cannot describe how much he has helped me with my difficult case. He was extremely thorough, tenacious and driven for the best interest of my son. I am forever grateful for his services and I quite often recommend him to friends or acquaintances who are going through the same situation in family court. He is easy to work with, very honest, helpful and knowledgeable while having patience and understanding. Works for you every step of the way no matter what time of the day or how difficult your situation may be.

Attorney Drapeau did an outstanding job on my case and I am very happy with the results. Lori helped me also and was very helpful. Sara was mostly nice but when I tried to talk to her she seemed a bit agitated. I also recommended a friend.

Review for Attorney Francis Xavier Drapeau Let me start by saying I never had or expected to have a case or law firm this long in my life. My journey started in 2006 with Attorney Bernie Poliner of Poliner and Poliner in Middletown, Connecticut. Bernie had mentioned to me that he had been thinking of retiring and negotiating with the Law Firm of Leighton, Katz and Drapeau in Vernon, Connecticut, to take over his case load. As it turns out Bernie had a severe fall, hit his head and within days had passed away. Bernie’s Legal Secretary, Lorrie Cohen was making the move to the firm of Leighton, Katz and Drapeau. Lorrie has been a God-send to me because I have called her numerous times where she has been a sounding board for me, answered questions, listened to me with concerns and always there to help in any way she could. It was an easy transition to Attorney Drapeau’s firm because I knew Lorrie knew my case inside out that was very comforting to me. For the next 10 (ten) years, Lorrie was my “go to” person, she was like a sister to me. Attorney Drapeau, I personally believe is the best Workmen’s Comp attorney could have ever had. H was always on top of my case to answer questions and concerns thoroughly. I was amazed at what “A Cool Cat” he was always calm and talked to you until you understood, I never walked away from him either on the phone or in person scratching my head saying “what was he talking about?” In my opinion he represented my case with the best of his ability, kept me happy, so I would definitely recommend him to anyone that was looking for “THE BEST” Worker’s Comp attorney to represent them. He truly is the best Sincerely, Blake, Connecticut

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Vernon Rockville, Connecticut?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
