The only time Mike Abram talked with me was when I retained. His staff was unfriendly and he was completely unresponsive when I had questions. At the end of my case, he wouldn’t even afford me a phone call to discuss the outcome. Horrible attorney. I wouldn’t recommend this firm to anyone.

We discussed our case w several top attorney's in Georgetown, then met Mike and Chris. They offered 1-Hour Free consultation, some attorneys charged a fee. From the beginning, Mike clearly identified the situation, possible solutions, results and outcomes and as our case evolved, it became even worse from legal standpoint and what stood out was that he had a couple solutions for us to work to enhance and increase the odds for a good outcome for our case, unlike many top attorneys we consulted with, whom were more interested in getting paid and how much they charge and bragging about the number of cases they had..., Mike and Chris were very professional, no over promises and explained options and potential outcomes and recommendations on things we could do and/or control. We followed what Mike recommended while waiting for case review and hearings and the outcome worked out as planned. What was clear and impressive was how Mike was able to explain the process, what we would expect and have to deal with and why. When we finally went to court, it was like clockwork, how he managed the case, interfaced with the judges and prosecutors, was very clear they had a deep respect and long history with him, his work, representation, honestly and integrity. We were able to observe him work a few cases before ours on the day of our court date and similarly, represented his other clients the same way. Two thumbs up, and highly recommended! Finally, when you are in legal troubles, its not easy to find a good attorney or know if they are a good choice for your case when interviewing them.... but recommend to go with your gut feeling, we did after at least interviewing 6 other attorneys. Again, during our first consultation which was a face to face meeting with Mike and Chris, was crucial and both of our gut's told us this was the attorney to go with and we did. Thank God we ended up with the best possible outcome for our case. Also, Dawn, the attorney assistant or office manager, was also outstanding, compassionate, understanding and always helpful and responsive to our calls or needs. Two thumbs up and 5 out of 5-stars is the rating. Their fees were also in line or lower than the others and hands down well worth the money!

I do not believe that this attorney had my best interest at heart. I was falsely accused of a major crime with NO EVIDENCE to support the charges. The "victim" lied several times on the stand and yet I served 2 1/2 years. I believe that Mr. Abram was bullied into compromising a deal by some very powerful people. No appeals were file on my behalf, no further follow-up at all.

The grief and stress of what my family was going through was made worse by not understanding the system we were caught up in. Mike answered a call New Years Eve and was engaged in helping provide information about what to expect which gave us peace of mind. He took the time to make sure we understood what was going on and what to expect. There was no other choice for an attorney for us! I beyond appreciate all the time he takes to make sure that we, as a family, understand the system and are prepared.

I have worked with Dierdre on my own Wills and Estate planning and can honestly say she makes dealing with all of the intricacies that would overwhelm most much easier to manage. From the initial consultation through the process she was extremely professional and very thorough. I plan on using her again for other matters as well as recommend her for anyone who needs her services.

She presented herself well and very professional. Certainly knows the ins and outs of estate planning. She is not inexpensive but I believe that you get what you pay for.

I'm surprised no one has ever reviewed Ms. Hayes. She's an outstanding attorney and human being. She's personable and approachable, she's extremely well-versed in family law and she takes the time to explain everything in detail. Don't let her sweet smile and soft voice deceive you, she will fight for your rights! She's an assertive and intelligent woman who will deliver results. Best decision I've ever made was hiring ms. Hayes as my attorney. Would be lost without her.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Georgetown, Delaware?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
