I retained Mr. Gay for a PFA response after an old ex spouse resurfaced with some old allegations which spanned over a decade and multiple countries. Initially the evidence that she presented was significant but Mr. Gay was very quick to spot all of the inconsistencies and lies which showed her true motive. After multiple attempts to have the PFA dropped prior to the hearing we knew we were facing a tough fight since my ex only had to show preponderance of evidence for her PFA. My ex had free counsel representing her and the judge was showing clear bias against us. However each step of the way Mr. Gay was able to argue case law and rule of evidence to prevent my ex from submitting very narrow portions of our conversations which made her look good and me bad. Within the first 30 minutes he used several tactics to derail my accuser and her lawyer which ultimately led to them agreeing to drop the PFA. This all happened before Mr. Gay was able to present his argument. The fact that he was able to get my ex to drop the PFA before he even had his turn to argue is testament to his ability to control the case and obtain a favorable outcome. He has always been very transparent with me and provided me realistic outcomes but never gave up or conceded. Communication with him and his firm has been excellent and I felt that he was adequately prepared to defend me. He has 5 years experience as a prosecutor and now as a defense attorney he is well prepared to defend you. I highly recommend Mr. Gay for a consultation at the least.

March 05, 2016 was a day I will never forget. I was a passenger in our family car, when suddenly we were hit by another car. It wasn't long I realized I would need legal help. I researched Attorneys, and called a few. When I called Mr. Carey's law firm, I liked that they put the client first, Miss Carla told me that they would have to check to make sure that there was no conflict of interest with any of their other clients....Wow. I received a call back late that afternoon informing me that they could set up the consultation with Mr. Carey. Our consultation went well and Mr. Carey made me feel at ease. He walked me through everything from beginning to end, I signed the paperwork and Blake Carey was now representing me. I was thoroughly impressed by his knowledge and mannerisms. As time went on and surgery passed, then recovery, Blake kept in touch, giving status reports as well as showing a genuine interest in my well being. Almost fourteen months later we reached a settlement that was fair and equitable to my family and me. Many times I became frustrated and angry and Blake would calmly talk me through those times. I would whole heartedly recommend Blake Carey for any of your legal needs. On a personal note, I have heard all the horror stories that you could imagine about attorneys in general, Mr. Carey proved them all wrong. Consult with Mr. Carey and I am sure you will hire him!!!!

I was most pleased with Mr. Lawson's work on my behalf. His significant real life business experience made our communication more efficient and effective. This same experience tempered his legal advice so that I was able to choose options that were based on sound legal principles and best of all on grounds that were best for my business. This is a rare combination to fiind in a lawyer. I strongly recommend Mr. Lawson to any business person in need of legal assistance.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
