Mr. Koehler represented me as the petitioner in a DC CPO case, a horrific affair, 9 months of stalking, harassment, threats of violence and extortion. If I could give 10 stars I would. Mr. Koehler is that unique combination of highly knowledgeable and competent, while being incredibly personable. He handled the horrendous twists and turns of my case with such humanity, care and genuine concern for me (and the law), all the while navigating the DC legal system and the process for me with the utmost professionalism. After winning my case yesterday, I had the best night's sleep I've had in months. I slept so peacefully and soundly -- like I haven't in a very long time. And, I feel safe and secure, and intensely happy that I don't have to face the prospect of another day wondering what awful thing the stalker might do to attempt some form of contact/show his "affection"....It's been the most horrendous nightmare. My family, friends and loved ones -- and most importantly I can't thank Mr. Koehler enough for restoring to me a feeling of safety and freedom. I owe him an immense debt of gratitude. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, one Hoya to another.

As many people often do, I realized (too late) that I may have made a mistake in handling a situation and could have potentially opened myself up to liability. I called Jamison to get a quick take on my situation. To my surprise, he picked up the phone immediately and made time to discuss. He had immediate and detailed knowledge of the ins-and-outs of my situation. He asked pointed questions and gave me some quick, understandable feedback (off the top of his head). This really put my frantic mind at ease for the moment.

What else can I say that hasn't been said already? He is a kind, sensitive, intelligent lawyer that genuinely cared about my unfortunate situation. He was very patient and answered all my numerous and excessive questions. He even promptly replied to my email at 4 AM! Who does that? And of course, he got me the very desirable Deferred Prosecution Agreement. There are many lawyers in DC, and one may not know how/whom to choose. Well, I can tell you that within first minute of talking to him, I knew that I made the right choice. Most highly recommended!

Mr. Koehler successfully represented myself in a misdemeanor charge. Since the first time we got in touch, he was clear, accurate and extremely honest. His job was outstanding during my representation. I obtained a deferred prosecution agreement, that was the best scenario for my case. I completely recommend Mr. Koehler for his professionalism and excellent service. I’m very satisfied for having hired him.

My brother, who I support, found himself in the unfortunate situation of having to clear his name from a misdemeanor charge. This was an incredibly stressful time for our family, and since he is about to go to school, his future could have been seriously thwarted. We spoke to multiple attorneys and from the get go, Mr. Koehler was the only one who took the time to answer all of our questions, provided additional relevant information and genuinely seemed to care. Once we retained Mr. Koehler, we realized we had made the right choice: he continued to answer our questions in record time, he prepared the paperwork in a few days, offered excellent legal counsel, and more importantly, helped me understand and handle such a stressful situation more effectively. He did all this with a newly minted government prosecutor, which shows how superior his performance was. My brother got a deferred prosecution agreement, which was the best case scenario for him. We are incredibly thankful to Mr. Koehler. He is one of those attorneys who I think genuinely believes in helping people and who probably still has the same do-good motivation from when he started a career in law.

I appreciate S.L. England so much! He really helped me every step of the way! If there was anything , I mean anything I needed, he was there to help. If I didn’t understand something, he made it very clear for me to understand. He helped in every way possible. I was super nervous, paranoid, everything you can think of and all he said to me was “ I got you, don’t worry!” And surely enough I DID NOT have to worry at all! He always had a solution which was helpful on my end and he is just a very understanding person! Overall, I personally feel as though he is one of the best Criminal Defense Attorneys in the DMV. Hands down. I would recommend anyone to hire him!

Mr. Markowwicz has been hands down the BEST lawyer I could've ever had on my case. From the day he was hired he set high expectations and gave me his opinions based on the information I gave him straight forward. Any and all questions were answered, and he fought for me more than I honestly felt that I would've been able to fight for myself in court. Throughout the case, he made sure to keep me updated on everything and even gave me advice on the things I needed to do in order to help strengthen my argument when it came time to do so. To sum it up he was able to help me win FULL primary custody in a case where I truly believed I'd only get visitation rights. Words can't express my gratitude. Thank you, Mr. Markowics

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Washington, District of Columbia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
