I found out that the apartment I lived in for 2.5 years was rent controlled and wasn’t registered with any governing body as a legal apartment. I was charged far in excess of the allowable rent for the apartment the entire time I lived there and was facing a judge that told me that rent control no longer existed in DC so I didn’t really have a case. He’s a compassionate person who understood my struggle and put a thorough and amazing amount of work into meeting me where I was financially and helping me with every step of my case. As a black woman going up against white housing providers I truly didn’t expect much from this case, but I kept going anyway because I didn’t want the property owners to feel like they could get away with what was clearly shady and dishonest activity. I am so happy to have had Marc in my corner for this experience! In the end it all worked out and I know those property owners will think twice before being dishonest with their tenants again. Marc and his team are an excellent group and I am so glad that he took on our matter! In late 2022, we learned that our apartment building was up for sale. We quickly started to organize our Tenants Association (TA) and met with Marc immediately to see what we needed to do regarding our TOPA rights. Marc provided immediate assistance with reviewing our registration materials for the TA and advising us where to submit the packet. He was with us every step of the process, answering all questions by email or phone almost immediately at any time of the day or night. He attended negotiation talks with us and the Seller and worked to negotiate a very large settlement payout for our TA members. The process lasted for 8 months and never once did Marc slow down or give less effort. He is highly knowledgeable and effective, and I would recommend him to anyone needing an attorney that works in landlord/tenant matters.
