Nick Woodfield mishandled my employment case and mislead me to sign a release agreement with a lot of holes in it. Mr Woodfield was assigned to my case by his firm and I did not have any say in him leading the case. Once I decided to settle, I clearly provided Mr Woodfield with a list of key provisions that need to be included in the settlement, but he was not able to achieve any of the key ones. He initially presented himself as the best in the industry suggesting he would do a great job, but his results were terrible. Mr Woodfield made many mistakes along the way, including process mistakes, that hurt the case much. Mr Woodfield did not even clearly update me on his lack of success in getting concession from the other side. I would find his failure to achieve the set objectives while going through latest versions of the settlement agreement. There were material differences between him and the lawyer representing the other side. Based on the email exchanges I saw, the lawyer for the other side would say "my client needs xyz" in a very caring manner while Mr Woodfield would say "my client demanded xyz" presenting it as if it was an extra unnecessary demand. Mr Woodfield is also a rough communicator. In an effort to cover up his mistakes and weaknesses, Mr Woodfield would sometimes raise his voice and communicate in a very nasty manner On the positive side, he was available to chat whenever needed and respected our schedule and would show up for meetings consistently. Overall, I was highly dissatisfied with Mr Woodfield's handling of my case and both his process and result were NOT great.

I retained Nicholas regarding an employment law matter that was very tricky! Needless to say, 99.99% of the cases in this area result in an unfavorable outcome. Nicholas quickly guided us to a successful outcome and we ended up in the 0.01% that have a positive outcome! I am incredibly impressed! He had substantial experience in the area, attended conferences where it was discussed, and had discussed the matter with attorneys on various sides of the matter so he knew how every side would view it. He did not need to research the matter and knew the law in great detail! Additionally, we were constrained on time, so we needed his assistance several times within a constrained window. Nicholas and his team went way out of their way to help us, explain how everything works, and help us navigate through the issue to a successful outcome! I will use him and his team again! I recommend him to others as well! Exceptional experience! He made a very stressful experience so much better!

Great and Knowledgeable attorney I had a phone consultation with him and he gave me fantastic advice and brought up points that nobody mentioned. It was regarding federal employment and EEO.

Mr. Woodfield assisted me in a defamation case against one of the largest banks in the U.S. Although, we did not initially prevail, there was a reason. The NY Times and other media outlets have written multiple articles regarding the matter. According to clients directly involved, the bank's employee(s) made verifiable false statements under oath. After arbitration, the SEC and the CFTC assessed fines and a disgorgement of $367 million dollars. Must prove I have been right all along. The saga continues. Thanks for all of your assistance Nick.

Mr. Woodfield, Mr. R. Scott Oswald and the Employment Law Group successfully represented me in a five year whistleblower/employment case against my employer, a U.S. Government Agency. Attorneys are like physicians in that when you need a specialist, you want the best. Nick and the ELG may be expensive, but I have found that you get what you pay for when it comes to representation. Our case took five years to litigate against the Agency and the Merit Systems Protection Board. Ultimately, my case went before the U.S. Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. Thanks to Nick and the ELG, we won a precedent setting decision and increased protections for federal workers. This was clearly attributable to Mr. Woodfield's knowledge, his outstanding writing skills, and his hard work. From the first time I met with the ELG, I was presented with a well thought out plan of handling the case. I agree with those who complimented Mr. Woodfield on his outstanding performance in a trial setting. I would not want to go into a hearing without Mr. Woodfield and his team. I also agree that he gave me the right answers, not just the answers that I wanted to hear on many occasions. I recommend Mr. Woodfield and the ELG to everyone I know would not hesitate to use them again myself.

I appreciate S.L. England so much! He really helped me every step of the way! If there was anything , I mean anything I needed, he was there to help. If I didn’t understand something, he made it very clear for me to understand. He helped in every way possible. I was super nervous, paranoid, everything you can think of and all he said to me was “ I got you, don’t worry!” And surely enough I DID NOT have to worry at all! He always had a solution which was helpful on my end and he is just a very understanding person! Overall, I personally feel as though he is one of the best Criminal Defense Attorneys in the DMV. Hands down. I would recommend anyone to hire him!

Mr. Markowwicz has been hands down the BEST lawyer I could've ever had on my case. From the day he was hired he set high expectations and gave me his opinions based on the information I gave him straight forward. Any and all questions were answered, and he fought for me more than I honestly felt that I would've been able to fight for myself in court. Throughout the case, he made sure to keep me updated on everything and even gave me advice on the things I needed to do in order to help strengthen my argument when it came time to do so. To sum it up he was able to help me win FULL primary custody in a case where I truly believed I'd only get visitation rights. Words can't express my gratitude. Thank you, Mr. Markowics

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Washington, District of Columbia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
