I had a great pleasure working with Mr. Lloyd. He was assigned to my case after the passing of Mr. Joseph Kaplan. He quickly got acquainted with my case and started asking the right questions. He included me in all communications and provided timely responses to the agency. He is friendly, diplomatic, calm, and has a great ability to deliver a message in a clear, compelling, and concise manner. I experienced first-hand all the qualities and traits he exhibits. Mr. Lloyd is an astute attorney who has compassion for his clients, willingness to listen, great judgment, excellent communication skills, a proven track record, the necessary experience and knowledge, and a deep understanding of the law. I trust him and trust his judgment and believe he has everything a client needs in his/her journey to pursue justice. Mr. LIoyd provided honest opinions even though that – at times – was not necessarily what I wanted to hear, nor did they represent the best outcome for his bottom-line. Still, he believed it is in my best interest to listen to the truth. He put my interests above others and clearly understood the financial burden associated with my legal fight. Mr. Lloyd is very responsive. He answered my e-mails on the same day or the next day. Additionally, he is strategic and understands the rules of the game. He is an exceptional and well-respected lawyer, and he was unstintingly generous with his wise counsel and sympathetic ears. I strongly recommend Mr. Lloyd to Federal Employees who endured injustices by their agencies. He has a passion for serving justice and be a voice for those who been victimized by injustices. He is someone you can trust, rely on, and rest assured that he will do everything within his power to fight for you and be on your side until justice is served.

I first met Johnathan as opposing counsel on a case during my time at the Office of General Counsel at the USDA and I came away impressed. Despite his young age at the time in 2013, he carried himself extremely well and objected during the deposition when he felt the line of questioning had diverted into dangerous territory for his client. I took note of his litigation style, which resulted in a settlement for his client, and kept his card in my address book. Interesting enough, when I had my own work issues, I reached out to Passman & Kaplan and specifically requested Johnathan as my attorney. I'm pleased to say that I received two (2) favorable EEOC decisions due to the skill and acumen of Johnathan as his experience with MSPB and EEOC law for federal employees best helped me navigate the potential pitfalls for complainants in a system that heavily favors federal agencies. I wholeheartedly recommend Johnathan as he is competent, dedicated, and can handle clients with superior legal knowledge, like myself, but also laypersons with no law background.

Johnathan provided invaluable assistance with my federal disability retirement case. He was extremely knowledgeable and courteous. He was calm, and caring, and kind of held my hand through the process of getting my settlement agreement with the federal government in place, and getting my disability retirement forms and supporting documents in as well. There were a few things he didn't know, and almost all of them were covered at least in part by P&K's "Federal Employees Survival Guide" - only 1 or 2 things were unanswered that I had to rely on the feds to answer. Very happy about that! He was up on my case every time we talked. There was one day in winter when the office was closed because of the amount of snowfall, and the final settlement agreement was due to be okayed by him and signed by me. He was at home, and was able to get it all done for me on time so we didn't have to rely on the government's "good graces" to forgive the lateness. He, and other P&K employees, went above and beyond on that one! And, it is much appreciated. Very happy with Johnathan, his knowledge, expertise, and service.

I appreciate S.L. England so much! He really helped me every step of the way! If there was anything , I mean anything I needed, he was there to help. If I didn’t understand something, he made it very clear for me to understand. He helped in every way possible. I was super nervous, paranoid, everything you can think of and all he said to me was “ I got you, don’t worry!” And surely enough I DID NOT have to worry at all! He always had a solution which was helpful on my end and he is just a very understanding person! Overall, I personally feel as though he is one of the best Criminal Defense Attorneys in the DMV. Hands down. I would recommend anyone to hire him!

Mr. Markowwicz has been hands down the BEST lawyer I could've ever had on my case. From the day he was hired he set high expectations and gave me his opinions based on the information I gave him straight forward. Any and all questions were answered, and he fought for me more than I honestly felt that I would've been able to fight for myself in court. Throughout the case, he made sure to keep me updated on everything and even gave me advice on the things I needed to do in order to help strengthen my argument when it came time to do so. To sum it up he was able to help me win FULL primary custody in a case where I truly believed I'd only get visitation rights. Words can't express my gratitude. Thank you, Mr. Markowics

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Washington, District of Columbia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
