After being underpaid by insurance for my 'Sandy' claim, and after facing one brick wall after another (even after fraudulent activity was uncovered within FEMA and ins. companies), I turned over my concerns to these knowledgeable and persistent attorneys. Success!! The whole team was understanding, encouraging, and unrelenting in their efforts to help me. I can now complete my repairs.

When Hurricane Sandy came through our area, my family and I , along with many, many others were in serious trouble. This area was a mess. Growing up in Florida, it was obvious that Long Island was not prepared nor equipped to deal with this type of storm!! Getting cleaned up, having our electric restored was a very long and slow process, but we started to come back to somewhat of a "normal" situation a couple of months after the storm. We had insurance, and went through the process. SBA loans were available unfortunately we used this option, because the representatives from the SBA who were processing the loans gave a lot of people the wrong information, and we are going to pay for that for many, many years to come. Honestly, again after spending most of my life in Florida the way the storm was handled by insurance companies, and then the state ( NY Rising) it was confirmed that a category one storm with a 8 to 10 ft storm surge was out of the ordinary for this area, and was not something that could have been handled. Unfortunately, I have been through quite a few large hurricanes, and have never experienced anything close to this. About a year after the storm my dad advised me about a law firm that he spoke to that was assisting people in this area to financially be made whole again. So without expecting much I contacted them. I had the consultation over the phone, sent the paperwork they requested, and met with representatives and inspectors from the law firm. What I saw then was nothing short of amazing . It was like they were trying to rebuild their own home !!!! They were constantly in contact with me, did exactly everything they said they would, and were very thorough in every aspect of the case. I met a gentleman named Nick, he and his team were handling my case, and they were fantastic. Have you ever called a bank , credit card company, etc ? And you left a message that fell into a "black hole" and you had a better chance of getting hit by lightning then receiving a call back ? Well this wasn't like that at all, when you called for something, they answered the phone, i think in the almost 2 years that this process took, i maybe had to leave 2 or 3 voicemails, they were right there. I haven't had to many experiences dealing with law firms, but if they were all like this the world would probably be a better place, it was so nice to see people have pride in what they do, especially in today's age!!! All I can really tell you is, I'm not sure exactly what other areas of law that Weisbrod Matteis & Copley handle , or if you now or in the future might need an attorney, but if you do call these people. Because, I don't write reviews at all (as you can probably tell) but if you have the same experience I did which I'm sure you will, then you will be writing one too!! This law firm is absolutely the way to go !!

Great law firm and wonderful hard working staff who will do there best to get you the most funds possible. The bureaucracy associated with these FEMA flood claims requires many legal steps and maneuvers, but Weisbrod Matteis & Copley staff are experienced tireless professionals who keep on top of these requirements. Your in good hands with these folks. Highly recommended!

I appreciate S.L. England so much! He really helped me every step of the way! If there was anything , I mean anything I needed, he was there to help. If I didn’t understand something, he made it very clear for me to understand. He helped in every way possible. I was super nervous, paranoid, everything you can think of and all he said to me was “ I got you, don’t worry!” And surely enough I DID NOT have to worry at all! He always had a solution which was helpful on my end and he is just a very understanding person! Overall, I personally feel as though he is one of the best Criminal Defense Attorneys in the DMV. Hands down. I would recommend anyone to hire him!

Mr. Markowwicz has been hands down the BEST lawyer I could've ever had on my case. From the day he was hired he set high expectations and gave me his opinions based on the information I gave him straight forward. Any and all questions were answered, and he fought for me more than I honestly felt that I would've been able to fight for myself in court. Throughout the case, he made sure to keep me updated on everything and even gave me advice on the things I needed to do in order to help strengthen my argument when it came time to do so. To sum it up he was able to help me win FULL primary custody in a case where I truly believed I'd only get visitation rights. Words can't express my gratitude. Thank you, Mr. Markowics

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Washington, District of Columbia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
