I ran into trouble while visiting S.W. Va and needed a telephone consult. When we talked, Mr. Eads had already researched my situation and was able to explain it kindly and clearly. I appreciate his extra effort, only to honestly tell me; I am likely best served by not hiring an attorney.

Randall took extreme care in the handling of a criminal case for my Mother. He took his time with us and explained options and procedures. He was professional at all times and kept us informed throughout the proceedings. We have used his services again in the writing of a will. We found Randall's advice to be trustworthy and we highly recommend him.

My son got a speeding ticket in VA and he had to appear at court. This was the first time happened to him and we had no idea what to do since he lives in AZ. Luckily, we found this firm and they guided us what to do. As a result, my son didn’t have to go to the court since it’s been dismissed. Frankie, the associate, was very kind and professional. We totally recommend this firm.

Jason was hired to handle a divorce and personal equity from a 36 year marriage. It took 3 years to get a divorce, was 6 years out and the equity wasn’t settled. The law firm decided at that point there was a conflict of interest due to one of the firms lawyers was given a gift of value from my ex husband. Poor personal experience from this lawyer and this firm. Definitely won’t recommend.

I was a guest at a private event that featured a seven course menu with wine pairing. It was not just a meal, but an Experience! Every dish was excellent and paired wonderfully with each wine. The staff was super welcoming and never have I received so much attention. I am sure that everyone would have a wonderful evening here, even if it is just a standard reservation. Superb!

I retained Ms. Pease for a personal injury case in July of 2022. Ms. Pease was very difficult if not impossible to get in touch with. She never responds to emails (As a lesson never use an attorney with a Gmail address). When I was able to get in touch with Ms. Pease or her ever-changing staff they informed me that the case was moving forward and they were waiting on medical bills. Finally, in August Ms. Pease informed me that after wasting a year she would no longer be pursuing the matter. I asked her to please mail me all documents related to the case so that I could pursue the matter with another attorney. Up to this point Ms. Pease has yet to send those documents (I strongly suspect there are no documents, because she did no work). Overall, I found Ms. Pease to be extremely unprofessional and I certainly wouldn't recommend trusting her with legal matters.

I was a client of Stephanie’s for a few smaller charges, but she was so wonderful to work with. She took care of everything without me even having to set foot in the court room. If you want someone who not only cares about her work but cares about her clients, I highly recommend you going to her.

If I could leave ZERO stars I would! This attorney who is listed as a bankruptcy lawyer is currently assigned to my mother in laws criminal case. I have been by his office called numerous times and can't get him to go see his client or schedule a bond hearing. He doesn't care about any evidence I have to show him. They ignore my calls now when I call cause other people will call after me and someone miraculously answers after my call isn't. If you want to stay in jail, have no defense at all, then you've found your attorney right here! I have dealt with a few attorneys, paid and court appointed, and this one really takes the cake on being the absolute WORST!

I hired Mike to help me work my way through bankruptcy. That was a traumatic enough event, but he was kind and professional, knows his business and set me straight when needed. Exactly the right person to do the work. Part of what drove me to bankruptcy was a rather draconian divorce settlement. In Mike's words, "Dude, you were screwed." After the bankruptcy was in place, my ex-wife decided she wanted to go after "optional" monies from the divorce decree. Because of my financial status, I am not able to comply. Undeterred, she pressed her legal council to attempt several methods to secure this extra bit from me. Mike has handled all of these in his most professional and efficient manner. He keeps me informed and keeps my interests on top. I am so very lucky to have found him, purely by chance and in a desperate time. I will be his client for a long, long time.

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?

  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
