I first met JD when my children were quite young and in a very bad situation with their biological father. JD worked with me and for me tirelessly and we had an absolute phenomenal outcome with that case. Since JD has assisted us in every little need we have had. Our.most recent, my husband had two aneurysms and a stroke and JD and his assistant, Carla, had the poa paperwork over to us in less than 24 hours. Incredible people, real people, that actually care. I would recommend his practice everyday, everytime.

We were referred to JD after a terrible car accident and his team quickly began to take care of us. After traveling to meet us due to limited mobility, he immediately began handling all the needs of the situation. Our case was handled beautifully and quickly. JD and his team are highly recommended.

Ms Hippely was through and assertive at my trial against two defendants who owed me money. We won against an experienced litigation attorney in a hotly contested trial and she got the judgement paid as well. I would hire her again

I was able to benefit from the 22 years of experience Attorney Hippely has in the small claims court system by her assistance in helping me to understand how to prepare for court and the judge. Despite being nervous, our preparation of exhibits and testimony made me feel confident. We were successful on our Complaint. I would hire her again!

I was in a bad situation with an old debt that went back several years. I had tried to call and get it settled a few years back but I had some problems with getting the debt collection agency, at the time, to give me an agreement in writing or accept my checks for payment. They wanted me to give them access to my bank account so they could do automatic withdrawal. I finally quit talking to them and just ignored it all (right or wrong). Needless to say interest and penalties added up and it was just driving me crazy to still have that out there. I went to Andrea because I did not want to go through the aggravation of dealing with them again. She was very thorough in making sure she had all the relevant information and was able to settle my case for a fraction of what they said I owed. I would use her again in a heart beat and recommend her to anyone who is need of her expertise.

My rating of Attorney Greene is based on a consultation only, in which he was able to clarify & provide clear instructions regarding a probate issue, that prior to the attorneys who had written my late brother's will did not seem comprehend; an issue the probate clerk warned would cause the family and heirs long lasting complications if not handled before probate closed. Atty Greene's knowledge and experienced in probate law was impressive. He understood the dilemma and quickly explained it to me, and more importantly how to remedy it. His advise was invaluable. On my request he wrote brief notes that I could refer to, and follow. This was especially helpful. His consultation was reasonable - its worth far exceeded the cost.

I received a recommendation to reach out to Bradley McMillian for consul and representation for a moving-car traffic violation that was extremely important for me to get reduced or removed. After explaining my situation to him, McMillian was able to get South Carolina to completely drop the ticket - the best outcome I could have hoped for. Throughout the process McMillian was professional, knowledgeable, and very helpful in addressing any questions I had regarding the law and court proceedings/ requirements. Would certainly recommend

We recently were in need of professional law services to update our out of state wills and estate plan documents. After researching local Aiken, SC attorneys we were referred to the Austin & Pethick Law Firm. On our first meeting with Chris Austin we knew we were in good hands. Chris’ affability complemented by the friendliness and professionalism of the entire staff made this very thorough and detailed transition most comfortable. We would certainly recommend the Austin & Pethick Law Firm to others based upon our superior experience.

I used this office to close on my home and they didn't tell me how much to even pull out for them until the day before closing? So I wrote a check for too much and they gave me a refund check..... problem is they put both me and my gfs name on it so the check can't be cashed. And to get a new check they have to hold the check in there hands for 10 DAYS because it "left the building"....... can't even get YOUR OWN MONEY back from these people.

Prior to his disbarment he was my Divorce Lawyer. I was unaware of his legal issues and later found out that he was under investigation and was facing charges that he was later disciplined for in which I believe that he may have served prison time for. He did a horrific job as my lawyer. He was extremely arrogant and because of his legal advice, I am paying Alimony ($800 per month) to my Ex wife for life. She is also going to receive a large portion of my Military Retirement in a few months. Because of his lack of ability or ineptness in representing me, I will be paying over 30% of my retirement income to my ex wife. I believe that due to his own legal issues that he did not represent me as he should have.

I hired Lauren the summer of 2015 after my now ex-husband and I decided to separate with the intention of divorce. From the beginning Lauren was very involved in my case, making sure that I would get the best outcome from a divorce. She was great about answering all of my questions whether by phone, email, or office consultation. I also felt like she was very knowledgeable of divorce law and what I could or could not expect in our decree (such as not getting alimony since we weren’t married long enough to for sure be eligible). I also felt like she had great insight with what a judge would approve of if it came to us not agreeing on something. I fully trusted Lauren to represent me. In fact, I am now back in contact with her concerning some worries that I have related to the decree. I would 100% hire Lauren to represent me again should I end up back in court.

My first experience hiring an attorney and I would've came out no differently had I represented myself. She waited around stating it didn't matter who filed for divorce first when it most definitely is in the advantage of the person who files first. She told me we would have no issues getting my divorce on physical cruelty as I was the victim of domestic violence and turns out my injuries "did not meet the standard of the law" to get a divorce on physical cruelty which a good lawyer should know the laws and standards of those laws. Then she strongly encouraged me to admit to things that totally went against me in court that the other party did not have proof of anyway nor would've been able to prove had my attorney not told me to admit that had nothing to do with my reason for divorce. Needless to say attorneys work together and not for the individual client but for money and how much they can suck out of you. My divorce should've been simple no properties together no children together and only married 5 months. All I asked was for my medical bills paid for as my husband beat me to the pt of seeking hospital care and he was arrested on CDV and of course my $3,000 attorney fee paid and I didn't get either. All Maurice law firm got me was an empty pocket! My experience with maurice law firm was not positive. Dont let me forget they kept highlighting 5he fact they "discounted" my fee to help me out yet I was "paid in full" prior to our final court date which consisted of $2,000 that was supposed to include final court hearing yet after the final court date I then owed $660 more for nothing. So in the end I was left with $2,660 in attorney debt and $3,000 in medical bills due to apparently my attorney not knowing the standards of the law. Yeah okay I got divorced and away from my husband but then again I would've still gotten divorced representing myself and saving $2,660.

I hired her to represent me a few years ago. She was very unknowledgeable about the issues, and very unprofessional, going as far as to call me. I ended up getting my issues resolved through my own efforts, having to go around my own attorney to do so. Turns out, she never filed expungement papers for the dropped charges, so I had to pay another lawyer now to do so. Because of this crucial mistake on her part, I did not get a job I should have otherwise gotten. Very disappointed.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
