Matt is an excellent attorney, and this is not only because he graduated from Vanderbilt University Law school, but because of his communication skills, analytical skills and personality! He was very comforting during my troubling situation- - regarding a very serious traffic ticket. My license very well could have been suspended, but he was able to avoid this outcome from taking place. During the process, Matt kept me calm and informed at all times. Matt also has a very great relationship at all the courts where he practices, which is crucial when hiring an attorney. I definitely recommend him, and will use him again relating to any kind of case he will take! Couldn’t have been happier that I chose him to be my lawyer, and happy that I found a competent, trustworthy and kind lawyer for life! Thank you Matt; I am forever grateful

I spoke with Mr. Kearns about a speeding ticket case. He was extremely helpful and gave me all the information I needed to understand the ashland court system. He explained a lot of the process to me and even advised me how to plead. Overall talking to him was a blast and he is an amazing and helpful attorney that actually cares about your issues

Andrew helped me handle the probate process for my late Father's estate. I live on the other side of the country and Andrew made it very easy and pain free handling everything remotely. Whenever I had any issues, questions or even misplaced paperwork, Andrew was quick and helpful keeping everything on track. Would recommend contacting Andrew for any probate questions or help you might need.

Attorney Honker helped me with legal advice for a very worrying traffic violation in Ashland County. It is easy to see he is well regarded by his colleagues in court. I'm pleased with his professionalism and would definitely look again to him for help.

Jeff was an unbelievable God-send. He was a willing to talk with me about my problems, let me know what to expect and what to expect from him. Jeff worked with me on such short notice for what I thought for the price was too cheap, but went above and beyond and exceeded my expectations. Jeff, thank you for your assistance and I wish nothing but the best for you and hope you continue to have great success.

I saw plenty of reviews about Honaker that seemed great. But when I messaged him asking for assistance he was a terrible responder and that is not something to look for in a lawyer. He did not seemed interested in any way to assist me with my issue and it was very frustrating. I had better help from another set of lawyers I had called. I’m sure he does his job well, but communication is awful.

After scheduling a consultation with Attorney Kellogg I was disappointed when I had to phone the office to confirm that our appointment was still on. His assistant was surprised that I hadn't received a call and said she would reach out and confirm. After hours of waiting by the phone I called back only to find that his assistant was just as surprised as I was they he didn't reach out. She attempted to cancel that days appointment and when I suggested to leave it scheduled and to schedule a tentative second appointment in case I was not contacted, it was rather difficult to get it scheduled. But when the second appointment came and 15 minutes into it I received a phone call from his assistant indicating that neither she nor he knew he was scheduled to sit on the bench that day. But that I should wait by my phone for his call. After several hours I called back to express my frustrations that I am expected to be on call when we had a scheduled time to meet.. and that they wouldn't accept me if I were 15 minutes late to a scheduled meeting. At which point the assistant became rather rude and cold suggesting that she could have him call me back with referrals (I wouldn't want any referrals from an attorney that can't keep appointments). I indicated that I would wait for a response. Unfortunately I was out to eat when attorney Kellogg did decide to return my call at 8 minutes to 5 (rescheduled appointment was at 1100). Having already reached out to other area attorneys for consultation I declined to answer the call. Needless to say if you are looking for an attorney to represent you I do not recommend this office. For as precise of a field that law is to have an attorney that cannot manage his schedule and maintain appointments or even call to indicate that he's running behind... That is an attorney that I do not want to represent me. It's just sad that I have to go all the way to Mansfield to find good representation in Ashland County.

They represented my ex-husband in the custody of our son. There was nothing to fight about; it was just a matter of paperwork. But when I received their letter letting me know they would be representing my ex, all I could do was laugh... hysterically. It was a simple 1-page, 3-paragraph letter that had 17 typos in it, and the attorney signed it. Did he even read what he was signing? If he did and can't see typos, how well is he going to represent you in court? Attention to even the smallest detail is what makes a good lawyer. While that may not seem like a big deal to most people, to me, it showed that if they can't even write a letter, how in the world would they be in court?

While preparing a title for a purchase of a property, this lawyer totally demonstrated his negligence and/or incompetence. Several months after the transaction, we were served with notice of a pending sherrif's sale on the property due to several lienholders filing foreclosure proceedings. This lawyer had either never done a thorough title search or ignored his findings in an effort to defraud us. We ended up paying over $15,000 to satisfy lienholders to receive a clear title.

In doing a home sale for us, this lawyer did not do a thorough title search. He supposedly had produced a free and clear title. However, the truth was that several months later, he had not done so. We later were served with a a forclosure notice by the county due to funds owed to several companies that had liens against the property. We ended up having to pay over $15,000 to these lien holders in order for the Ashland County Sheriff's Department to stop the foreclosure. Unfortunately, there was no recourse for us against Mr. Good (some name for such a shyster). I encourage absolutely no one to use this particular lawyer as he never offered any form of remuneration to us for his gross negligence. I believe he may have wanted to purchase the property himself in a sheriff sale. In my opinion, he is a total crook and should be disbarred by the Ohio Bar Association.

Michael Sullivan was unfortunately appointed to represent me on 2 different occasions, and both times failed miserably. He did not research my case or go over my whole discovery by any means, therefore when we went in front of the judge, he left out crucial details that would have immensely helped to defend my case. I even tried to whisper things to remind him of during the hearing and his only response was to wave me off as if I was annoying him and proceed to finish up the hearing as quickly as possible so he could get on to the next. He was 110% completely worthless and treated my whole defense of the case as a complete joke. I also heard from multiple people many times when asked who was representing me that I may as well just bend over and plead guilty now because with him as my attorney I was guaranteed to get to get screwed. Honestly feel it would have gone better and I would have had a better shot if I had just defended myself.

This man is not just a coward but a stain on what the US Constitution demands a prosecutor must be. His political "connections" dictate his behavior, not ethics and not the law but then again, he "owes" the political people in Ashland (and most specifically the judge who is the most corrupt person I have ever had the unfortunate experience to have to be in the same room with). To cite one example, Tunnell promised to contact me "next week" concerning a legal matter I brought to his attention but he didn't respond within a "few weeks" -- it took him almost four months to respond and then with a "blow off" letter that stunk worse than his own stench of corruption. Is his trustworthy? Hell no! Is he responsive and did he keep me informed? If you think four months is reasonable to return a phone call or write a letter, okay...but I don't. Is he knowledgeable? I haven't a clue about his knowledge; I just know that he doesn't use his knowledge because he's "bought and paid for" by the political machinations in that town. I just hope enough people file enough complaints and make enough noise that one day justice will be served if not here in the hereafter.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
