I can count on one hand the lawyers I'd seek out for repeat business across various topics; Jason is now one of them. He and his office were proactive with status and communications. I didn't have to chase or wait to get answers. His rate was very reasonable and his result exceeded my expectations. I can sleep a bit better knowing I "have a guy" for NJ.

In a case in which there could have been a six month license suspension for unknowingly backing into parked car that probably was not legally parked in a parking lot, he had charges reduced to nopoints and no suspension. Proimpt, coureous, confident, and knowledgeable.

We hired David and never looked back! Sometimes life can throw curve balls at you, having the right law firm makes all the difference. No matter where we were in the process, we always knew that Dave, Bill and the entire team had our back. During moments of uncertainty, knowing our lawyer was a phone call a way made a huge difference. We never felt like just another client, we were always treated like we were their most important clients.

David Wright is not a relative and I don't know where he lives, etc. However, I called him (he is local and sought him out via internet) for advice. He treated me with courtesy, trust, respect and guidance. I wish to remain anonymous for personal reasons. I give him 6 gold stars! And I highly recommend him in re: any concerns one may have as per his area of expertise. Mr. David "Wright" is the "right" lawyer to those who need legal assistance. I HIGHLY recommend him!

David helped my family with a contractor dispute over a faulty furnace installation. He was very knowledgeable about the potential legal options to be pursued but more importantly, he understood the personal side of the matter. He wound up getting the contractor to replace the furnace with a new system even though this was not the most lucrative outcome for him personally. I would highly recommend David.

Charlene Cathcart's consummate professionalism throughout the entire process was a breath of fresh air. At no point did my confidence in her ability to represent my case fade. I have utilized the legal services of Charlene Cathcart on multiple occasions and in every single case, the outcome was precisely what I had expected. She is straight forward, undeniably knowledgeable with over 30 years of experience, and extremely capable in any context. She was always available when I had questions and she made me feel comfortable and secure from start. Her guidance was spot on and her poise and presence at trial was remarkable. I absolutely recommend her services to anyone in need of legal counsel.

I've had Charlene represent me on a few occasions and was highly satisfied with her services. Charlene is a strong, assertive and intelligent lawyer, with a no-nonsense approach. The other side will seem unprepared when Charlene is representing you, in my experience. Charlene's office was easy to find and once inside, I felt comfortable that our meetings were always important and private. Charlene was accessible when I needed to touch base, directly or through emails, faxes and/or leaving messages with Melissa.

I contacted Amy Knapp after reading an article she wrote years ago entitled “New Jersey Laws for Home Improvement Contracts - New Jerseys' Home Improvement Practices Act helps protect homeowners when using contractors in their homes.” Although, her practice is now focused on other areas, she promptly provided me with an outstanding contact who is very knowledgeable in this area of contractual consumer protection. This willingness to share information and professional contacts will others without hesitation is rare and very much appreciated.

I contacted Amy for bankruptcy in 2017. I was extremely fearful, filled with remorse and self loathing. She immediately put me at ease, explained the process and unfortunately at the time, due to my salary requirements, I only qualified for a Chapter 13 not a Chapter 7. Even though I was dismayed, she showed me the laws, the numbers and explained the process. She took me through the Trustees meeting which was a breeze because she did her homework and I supplied a ton of paperwork. She is tenacious and tender at the same time. It was so easy speaking with her about all of my concerns. She always called me back in timely fashion. No matter the time. I was able to file a Chapter 7 after 3 years in Chapter 13. I told her my circumstances changed with losing my job. She had me supply another ton of paperwork. Seriously, I hate paper trails but she made it easy telling me precisely what she required and by when . Nothing was promised yet again she did her homework and successfully saw me through the Trustee teleconference this time. She had all of her information available and didn’t miss a beat with questions from the Trustee. All fell into place exactly as she told me it would time wise. All I had to do was trust in the process and do exactly as I was told. I completed all the courses required and there were no issues. Amy has a fabulous staff assisting her. Bea helped me through a panic attack, Chelsea walked me through all of the paper work indicated. Always a smile and cheerful voice. Timely and efficient. I do believe these staff represent Amy in her commitment to serve the financially dispirited. I now have a much brighter sense of self confidence, ability to manage a budget and save and have fun. Amy guided me through this experience with grace and ease and laughter. What more could I want in an Attorney whose life mission is to serve the public?

Outstanding, organized, pleasant, understanding, gets to the facts. Returns calls within one day unless in court a little longer. Auto accident this was, there were three of us, he took care of me the driver, the other three passenger he recommended to another attorney. He kept me abreast of what was going on with my case, Drs. that I had to see, prepared me well for depositions. When ever I need any kind of paper work he all ways had it on hand, and my file was well organized. He cared about me as a client, and of course all my injuries. I will recommend him to any one, will use him again. Oh and not to mention his staff is outstanding.

A huge regret of mine is hiring Rob. When I initially called him asking to subdivide my property he was confident and said he can handle the job with no problems. 8 excruciating months of working with him later he could not have been more wrong. When we were finally able to schedule a meeting with the township board the first time, Rob was sorely unprepared. He had zero definitive proof of the basis of his argument (for us to convince the board). A PRUDENT lawyer would back up his claims with facts and proofs but he had none. It was an embarrassment to watch first hand and then I knew I had made a mistake and was tricked by his initial false confidence. The board asked some other trivial questions a prudent lawyer could answer but Rob had nothing. He used the excuse of not being able to "foresee" what the board would ask but they were asking basic questions. It was like it was his first time in front of the board. He had no problem charging us more and more for his mistakes when it could have been a yes from the board the first meeting. At the second meeting when Rob was finally prepared the board ended up saying no. We had one shot and the legal help we hired blew it. Instead of taking blame, Rob blamed us for not doing initial research, not putting in the contract a contingency for a subdivision. No seller would have ever accepted that offer. We had a really good chance the first time but since Rob and our planner were not prepared for the questions it costed us 8 months and tens of thousands of dollars. What further confirmed my belief that Rob is terrible in this field is when I spoke to the townships zoning officer. She has had meetings with many, many lawyers and had many subdivision cases and she even said Rob was horrible. My biggest mistake was not going to her originally and getting a recommendation from her. Learn from my story and don't make the same mistake I have made.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
