My parents are older and when they needed to get all their affairs in order she made them feel at ease, she explained in detail what they were signing. They left feeling confident that they had covered all their bases and had all their wishes met. She was very professional and pleasant to deal with.

I consulted and hired Attorney Paylor to help settle a dispute I was having with the selling party two years after the completion of the sale. I found out that there was an issue with the land that was not disclosed at the time of the sale. Attorney Paylor did a great job in settling the dispute. She was prompt and efficient at attending to the matter and I would recommend anyone utilize her services.

He provided great peace of mind so that I could move forward with the agreement.

I would never recommend Steve Smith for a divorce these reviews are fake (notice how they are all from the same timeframe) Steve Smith only stands up for criminals and abusers not the victims. He will gladly take your money because abusers will abuse the process and cost you dearly. When it comes to Steve Smith “himself”having to defend a victim of domestic violence he will fail by doing nothing for you and say “his team” created the best possible outcome. Steve should be ashamed of being a divorce attorney that leaves victims broke with no support and still at the mercy of their abuser months after the divorce is over. I’m hoping this review will stay here in hopes of letting other victims of domestic violence know that if they have finally made the decision to leave… Move along from hiring Steve Smith and don’t make another mistake.

All they want is your money. I had hired them to help me with my divorce case from when I moved from CO but when the lawyers met, all he talked about was the murder trial he had. After that they stopped answering emails. I spent 15000$ and got jack in return. I am medical retired, and get 24000 a year in retirement, which i lost to my ex and her failure to follow the court order and file a correct tax return. They took half of a years income and lost everything. I asked for calls back which were ignored for weeks. Mr Bourget or Mr Pearson only cared when they got the notice they were fired. I got a call in minutes. They wanted to set up a meeting even though I told them I hired someone else. I said okay but I am not changing my mind and they canceled last minute days later. I lost custody of my kids thanks to there laziness. Avoid them. As soon as a more headline grabbing case comes along they throw you to the wolves. Edit 12/9/23. Please note that in their response, they denied nothing of my claim while managing to be patronizing at the same time. The gall of them quoting the very thing they lost at, and refused to fight is sickening. Of course dealing with two states is difficult, but this firm claimed to be specialized in that regards. They are not, and should be ashamed by that response. I've used a different firm and for 1/5th of the cost have found them just as effective. I feel like they didn't fight for me, or have my best interests at heart. All i was, was a checkbook to keep writing checks for them to keep cashing and their lackluster cookie cutter response is a perfect example of this. Use buzz words and legal mumbo jumbo to make up for their shortcomings while saying nothing at all.

I would not recommend him to anyone. He does not return Phone calls or Emails. He was not in touch with the primary conservator(My Father) for almost 4 years and now he wants to express his opinions on issues that have been resolved between the primary conservator and myself. He is holding up a Home and Land Purchase I have tried to reach out to him and he refuses to return E-mail or calls. I have asked the Probate Judge to have him removed. He is an adviser and I have the ultimate choice to make with the aid of my primary conservator who is my father who is fully on board with the land home purchase. He had not contacted my dad in 4 years now he want to hold up everything that has been in motion and planning for a year. I appreciate his advice however at this time I feel as though it is not practical for my current situation. It was my awarded money and I want to own my own property and home and help other Veterans through a NON PROFIT I am in the process of forming. I engaged an independent lawyer who had no involvement in my case and have a complete understanding of my actions. I ask that he just sign the needed documents and allow the money transaction to occur. But again he wont communicate so I can get any resolution. The conservancy is projected to be dissolved in the spring of 2015 and he is still holding up my ability to purchase my own place to live and continue with the next chapter of my life . I was the one who asked for a conservator in the beginning of a legal settlement and it was understood that it was only temporary until I was able to process the legal situation and now I am now 45 years old and of sound mind fully capable of making my own decisions. All I ask is that he allow the primary conservator and myself to move on with the project at hand. But his failure to communicate properly is causing us to have no way to redress his concerns. Thank You

Do you want an attorney that will tell you that your case is just as important as any of his others but will basically hang up on you to take his other calls? Well, this is your guy! He was court appointed to me and boy didn’t he show that he could care less about the disposition of my case. His tone was that of an annoyed person whenever I would speak to him about my case. Contact was minimal at best. I ended up letting another lawyer of the day represent me when he didn’t even show up to my court date. He was absolutely no help at all and the other, much younger attorney actually helped reduce my fines etc. I would avoid this attorney at all costs, because he will cost you...

Questions? We have answers

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
