highly recommended. highly professional and clearly respected in the courtroom. it's no big secret that court is a good ol boys club where simply the name of your attorney wins you points. With his name and reputation, Dave is that kind of attorney. Yes, he is not the cheapest atty in the phone book but, as they say, you get what you pay for. Would you rather pay up front and get results or pay less and find that your case is drawn out only to cost you more over the long run. I would hire Dave again without question.

We were looking for Will and Power of Attorney planning. He explained our options for our request and then took the time to explain the pros and cons of each, all of the options available including Living Trust. He is very knowledgeable and approachable. We met with him twice and the documents contained everything discussed without having to make any corrections.

Teitle Law handled the closing of my house which I did FSBO. The law side of FSBO made me nervous but Justin and Brenda were there from start to finish making the process easy, understandable and not intimidating. I feel Teitle Law provided great value for my money and would definitely recommend them to any FSBO seller!

Justin & Brenda were absolutely amazing!! We went to talk about my husband adopting my youngest son. With a lengthy drawn out process, Justin & Brenda’s patience in our situation was KEY!! They nailed it and were amazingly friendly and treated you very well! Nothing I hate more then an attorney talking down to you when your paying them thousands of dollars, BUT Justin is NOT like that he is very kind and really cares about his clients and their cases!!

We had a very positive experience revising our will. I recommend your services to all of my elder friends as I feel so many could benefit from the information that is specific to your estate planning. My daughter who lives in Des Moines also took my advice and was able to get a great deal of help from the office staff and lawyers there after her ex-husband died. Had it not been for our experience here in Dubuque with Thad we would not have known to refer her on for help with his estate. It was imminently important that they do it quickly and they did not disappoint. So thanks again for what you do. I reassure my kids that when that when the time comes to deal with our estate they will be in good hands. That is a relief just knowing that. Joyce and Bill Stoffel

Our case was very complicated with many issues. After our consult, we felt Bob really listened to our concerns and understood our position. He is a quick thinker who is both comfortable and confident in court. Having his experience by our side eased our anxiety. We are so thankful for Bob and plan to use his services again.

Mr. Gallagher represented my family in a child custody case and he gave me a better defense than I could have imagined. He was extremely professional, and really did his research on the opposing party prior to trial. When it was all said and done, I spent around $6000 which was a bit steep for my taste, BUT, I was awarded full custody of my son and got to put a messy situation to bed which was long overdue. You truly cannot put a price on that.

I should start by saying our best case scenario going into court was to have the case dismissed, and Peter got that done for us on the first day (when another lawyer said the court would meet with us for a few minutes, and set a future trial date). The amazing thing is that getting the case dismissed wasn't even the best thing that Peter did. My fiancee had been separated for a long time, but had not filed anything with the courts. The Monday before Thanksgiving, her ex didn't show up for the meet-up to hand off the kids to her. He said they were sick, and then stopped answering calls. After driving to his house and a hospital, thinking there was some emergency, it was the middle of the night before we found a police officer who was able to tell us he had filed a temporary order of protection. They gave us a paper with some information, and told us documents would be served in the next day or two. I mention this so anyone reading this understands how I ended up spending Friday after Thanksgiving calling every lawyer I could find, hoping one would be available for a hearing at 8:00 AM the following Monday. I hired Peter, not because I knew anything about his qualifications, but because he was the only lawyer I could find who was willing to show up to court the Monday after Thanksgiving, presumably after cramming for the case all weekend. Peter showed up for the hearing early. He knew all the pertinent details, and he was professional. More importantly, he won the case. When I say winning the case was not the best thing he did for us, that's not hyperbole. Neither my fiancee, nor her children, live in Illinois. We hadn't discussed her filing for divorce, but it had obviously become inevitable. I don't think either of us considered where the divorce would happen. (When they were married, they lived in Iowa. We still lived in IA, and the children spent the majority of their time with us.) After winning our case, Peter told us my fiancee should file for divorce ASAP. We said we would. Peter said he wanted to be clear he wasn't talking about filing before too many days passed by. He was talking about filing before too many minutes passed by. He told us that he couldn't represent my fiancee, because it would be prohibitively expensive to hire a lawyer two hours away, but he offered to file the divorce papers. He explained that, if my fiancee's ex filed first, he would file in IL. Eventually, we would probably succeed in convincing the courts the divorce belonged in IA, but we would spend thousands doing that. If we filed first, we would file in IA, and probably wouldn't have to fight that battle. He drafted the divorce papers, and filed them in less than 1 hour. Throughout the 2 years of divorce that followed, my fiancee and I talked about how important that advice was. When you have 3 lawyers and 2 paralegals copied on dozens of e-mails about things as trivial as a missing lunchbox, you realize divorces are almost as much about how much you are willing to spend as they are the fact that you're actually the better parent. Saving thousands fighting about which state the divorce should happen in was huge, given what little money we had left after 2 years. Peter's rate was $25 higher than our IA lawyer, but his billing was less for calls they were both on, because he didn't overstate his billing like the other lawyer.

He fixed all the damage that a less experienced lawyer created on my divorce/ custody case. I went from supervised visits to joint custody. He's not very prompt with returning urgent phone calls.. But when it matters in court he is well prepared and knowledgeable. Very respectful and honest to clients as well. Definitely worth the money!

150 for consultation free which is normally free . Why would someone pay that if you didn’t have any answers or even know the case . And want 20,000-30,000 down for a case you know nothing about . Would think for a triple or more lawsuit case you would want the 30% of winnings like most . Must have tons of rewards for that price . Next time just tell them you don’t want the case !!!

If you ask him a question he makes you feel stupid for asking. And I mean any and every question. Mixes up his clients even sends out paperwork belonging to wrong client. Belittles his clients. And does not follow through with the plan. Will not admit if he’s made a mistake. And getting another of his client’s paperwork is a Big mistake and privacy issue. Tells you he’ll check on things and never does. Bottom Line he’s terrible! Giving him money to represent you is like throwing it out a window. Don’t waste any time with him he’ll just make you feel ignorant!

Four years ago I hired ms. Vesey for my divorce case which involved an order of protection against my ex. I was encouraged by ms. Vesey to drop the order and put it in the divorce decree instead which I found out later was very bad legal advice because instead of a criminal offense by my ex it became a civil offense and now I have to find a competent attorney to try to get full custody of my disabled son who is still being abused by my ex.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
