Hands down this is the best firm ever. My attorney inside and out is the best. His work shows that he’s compassionate about his clients' every need. He goes over and beyond and doesn’t think twice when making the right decisions for his clients. I HIGHLY recommend!

I asked for their help twice, and the advice and legal help they provided was exactly what I needed. Both times I got maximum settlement. I'm grateful that I was able find this law firm and would strongly recommend them to someone in need of legal services

I would highly recommend Scott D .Gardner . After calling a half dozen lawyers and reading reviews I gave his office a call. I was greeted by Sharon who was very nice and professional . After being transferred to Scott I knew he was guy whom I wanted to represent me . I could instantly tell he was a professional at what he does . He answered ever question and put me at ease . He was very nice and actually a pleasure to talk to. I kept my license for duration of my case and was able to walk away never skipping a beat . For home run results I Recommend Scott D Gardner!!!!

Scott was hired to deal with my DUI charge. He got me into a deferred disposition agreement that ended with nothing on my record just a ticket and the case was dismissed. I could not recommend Scott enough. He was Fantastic.

I had a consultation with Jason regarding the eviction process. The scheduling was easy, and Kristen is AMAZING - excellent customer service and quick turnover response time. Jason is great. I cannot thank him enough for being super helpful, honest, and a great human. Jason is the type of lawyer who truly cares about your case and wouldn't take advantage; honest and professional and goes above and beyond. Thank you both!!!!

You owe it to yourself to give this Canna-torney a call. First off , in this high tech voice menu voice mail Sorry he's in a meeting world we live in ....It speaks volumes that Jason Litalien answers his own phone . Not even a secretary screening his calls . A booming voice that commands respect when he's representing you . The guy is knowledgeable in his craft and quick with answers . He's personable and accommodating to a fault . He is up on every new change in Maine when it occurs and contacted ME when it affected me . WHO DOES THAT ? He does have some faults , for instance .....his truck is a Ford . He is a former owner of an adult beverage establishment in Biddeford and also ran for Mayor ( losing by just a handful of votes ! ) The guy is cool and understands the in and outs of us Guerilla growers leaving the dark side and going legit . I believe he is also in the beginning stages of forming a networking group to give us a free exchange of ideas and issues that might directly affect our specific community and help give us a voice . The depth and breadth of his involvement is astounding . He's been around the block . Graduate of Maine Law and proudly Rides his Harley weather permitting ( or not ) . Long story short is the subject line. .... DON'T HESITATE ......!!

We are extremely grateful to have found Tanya to represent us. We originally met with an attorney from another firm and after that meeting we were sure we had no good options to resolve our problems. However, after we met with Tanya everything seemed so much clearer. She presented us with options we did not know existed previously. Moreover, Tanya is not only a consummate professional, she is also very personable. We felt she actually cared about us and our case and that she always had our back.

Tanya went above and beyond helping me file an emergency bankruptcy in order to protect my property after losing my job. There were times when I felt no one could help with my special circumstances but she did. Tanya is very trustworthy and goes the extra mile in helping and protecting her clients. She proposed a few options where I could try to pay down my debt or file protection which would dissolve and any lawsuits. Tanya helped to reassure me we were doing the right thing. She is extremely professional and caring. I would recommend her and her firm to anyone.

I couldn't be happier with the way Harry and the staff handled my case. I was kept well informed and consulted about every decision. I did not have a big money case because thankfully I was not badly hurt. This in now way influenced how my case was handled. I got the full consideration and attention of team. If I ever need an attorney I know who to call.

Wow !!! I was very fortunate to have Chris Nielsen & his wonderful staff on my side. I was stopped in York, Me. for a suspected OUI ( 0.10 ). The Nielsen Group was hired and did a fantastic job of getting me thru the process. I was updated often by Chris & his staff on what was happening next. Chris had the OUI charges dropped to a lesser charge. I am very pleased with the outcome & would recommend & the rest of the Nielsen Group to anyone who needs help. J.B.

Chris Nielson represented me for a DUI. He ultimately had my charges dropped. He and Joycelyn made the whole process much more understandable and far less stressful. I was impressed with how well Mr Nielson knew my case. I was also made to feel like I was their only client when he arrived in court He didn’t act rushed or bothered. Something he said to me still sticks and it was don’t say sorry to him. I refused the DA’s offer to settle and Said sorry to him. He looked at me and said don’t say that!! It made me feel comfortable knowing he understood what I was Going through.

When I first contacted Randa she was sharing an office in Sanford with an experienced Lawyer. I obtained her services to deal with an ongoing Divorce. Randa was very concerned and helpful in the office but was meek and disheveled in the courtroom. Midway through the proceedings Randa informed me that she was going out on her own and opening up a sole law firm. I feel that this move was exicuted too early in her career. Randa always seemed like she was just behind the curve in the courtroom. She was drastically out classed my the oposing attorney in my case. She forgot to list evidence that the court needed to see and so it was dismissed. I do not know if I would have won with a different attorney but I do know I had a very slim chance with the attorney I chose. I will not recommend her to anyone that asks.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
