I had a great experience working with Chris. He was very organized, thorough, and knowledgeable throughout the entire home buying process. Chris always took the time to walk me through each step and explain/clarify any questions I had for him. He was an extremely effective communicator - not only with myself, but all other parties involved (mortgage lender, real estate agents, seller etc) and made the entire process very easy for everyone. I highly recommend Chris and his team for their services.

Chris walked me through buying my first home and could not have made the legal jargon as well as process more streamlined. He gave me constant updates and would keep me involved with game planning throughout the process as well. He was always accessible and very responsive. For a new home buyer - the process can be overwhelming and it was nice to know I had someone keeping an eye out for my best interests.

I have been Selling Real Estate for over 5 years, and dealt with dozens of attorneys. Chris guides his clients through the ups and downs of purchasing a house, and does a great job gaining his clients favorable outcomes. After a few deals with Mr. Crowley I can safely say he is a top notch professional, and I have no problem referring him to my clients. I look forward to working with him on many deals to come. I called to get a consultation and spoke with Al. He was more helpful than I honestly ever expected. Made me feel as though he truly cared about my situation and wanted to make sure he had all of the information necessary to provide me with as much help and guidance as he could. I can tell he is a great person and actually cares about those that utilize his services. I have never left a google review before but he went above and beyond and deserved to be my first. Thank you Al!

Contacted this law firm as they claim they handle complex divorces. I did not know Jane had a daughter, I wanted Jane and got the daughter (Meredith). It started out ok, but I got the feeling Meredith wanted to just negotiate and make it go away. I was notified there was an offer from ex’s lawyer, after reviewing the offer, I told Meredith absolutely not, let’s go to trial. Online hearing scheduled for Nov 2021, I hear nothing from Meredith for months and no responses to my emails until day of the hearing. About 10 min before the hearing she finally contacts me with another proposal that was so one sided I think I could have negotiated better myself. I refuse. Hearing is about 5 min and trial scheduled. About one week later, Meredith emails me and sends me a proposal and tells me review it and Let’s put this to bed. The proposal is exactly the same one I said NO to twice!! I ask Meredith why did she send me this proposal again? She claims that it came from the ex and she’s bound by law to present all proposals. Her prior emails hinted that she created this proposal but now is claiming it came From the ex. As I am looking at the email chain I notice Meredith has been CCing someone from RI Monthly magazine and that person has been privy to a lot of our communication. I question Meredith via email as to who that person is and why are they on our email chain and additionally where did that proposal come from? I never received a response. I even CC’ed Jane Howlett on the emails and still never a response. After emailing the law firm for 2 and a half months with no response, I fired them in February 2022. Once I emailed Meredith her services were no longer wanted, she emailed me back with in minutes. Money is owed to me from my retainer, their office claims it’s $800 and change due to me, I believe it’s more but to date they refuse to send me any money back as of May 9th. I have contacted the RI Judiciary disciplinary board to file a complaint. I hired a new attorney and my case is now finished and I did very well. Absolutely do not hire Meredith Howlett. I can’t speak of Jane, however I made her aware of all this in emails and she never responded so I assume she condones this type of service and behavior

I had reached out to this lawyer due to being a friend of the family she came on to my family court case and honestly couldnt afford her 2500 retainer explained this to her and she was willing to step in and be appointed by the state for me i was beyond appreciative of her doing so but from that moment on i was no longer a client i was a number to her from over 15 missed court dates talked one day about setting a motion the next day and never heard back from her for 6 plus months, 3 plus, 2 plus after that no responses to emails calls or texts i had to be rude in emails and calls to even get her on the phone (which any one who knows me would tell you for me to have to get that way means i had to try all other ways before getting me to that point as i was raised to be respectful always ) maybe the 3 or 4 times i was able to over the past year and a half it was super frustrating to try and represent myself time and time again when my family and my daughters life was at such high risks with sending my daughter 7 states away and to fight for her return when said placement was an awful fit and my child was being brutally hurt by children and staff, i was thankful for my case worker for moving as fast and doing what she could as quickly as possible but was told that if my lawyer was involved she could have sped up the process and she didnt and the awful thing about it, when im asked by other collegues of hers who represents me i state who she is and what i have been throught and EVERY single one of them say your not the first one to tell me this i hear it alot people arnt happy with her becauae she never showes up including other parents and social workers cant stand working with her as they can never seem to get intouch with her even when they cc her on documents and emails. I went to court yesterday knowing i was going to ask the judge to assign me another lawyer as she has failed me on neumerous occasions and i felt i wasnt being represtented at all let alone fairly and her actions were beyond unprofessional, before i could get most of my sentence out the judge looked at me and said your absolutly right you deserve better and i was thinking myself to reasign you today as it is not fair to you and your family ... A JUDGE!!!! .I was told this judge doesnt reasign cases often or at all but once she saw me always showing up with out representation time and time and time again she felt for me. If you are one to not worry about the case and dont like updates or calls or emails or be present at your court hearings and dates shes your girl!!!! but if you love your family and want whats right for them and common curtisy and a professional to be by your side SHE IS NOT IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM YOUR GIRL!!!!!!

I had an absolutely HORRIBLE experience with Meredith. If I could give her zero stars I would. She never kept me updated about the happenings of my case. She didn’t respond to calls, texts or emails in a timely fashion. She blamed me for delays in the case stating I didn’t return documents, when in fact she had never asked for said documents. She didn’t show up to court- she had someone show up in her place without notifying me prior. I even caught her in several lies regarding whom she had spoken to regarding my case. She refuses to return the $1300 of the “refundable” deposit that was unused at the time I fired her. Meredith will take your money and won’t do a single thing for you. She was my lawyer for almost a year and nothing got done. Save yourself the trouble, hire someone else.

Meredith was absolutely amazing in representing me in my case. She always kept constant communication with me on what was going on and what the process would be inside the court room. She is extremely professional in every aspect and I would highly recommend her for anyone looking for representation.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
