I can't recall EVER saying anything nice about a lawyer and I'm 78 years old! Phillip accomplished in 3 months what I was trying to achieve over the past 3 years. I was getting jerked around by a service provider who kept saying "yes" to my requests but was delivering nada! Very professional, easy to work with, great communications, knowledgeable, responsive. Everything a great lawyer should be!

Phil Berger came to me as a referral in handling a rather tedious and complex real estate partition case. I have been beyond pleased with his extremely high level of insight, thoughtfulness and professionalism. Phil has continued to be reliable, responsive and very detail-oriented throughout a rather long process. He has always clearly and thoroughly conveyed all legal steps and procedures at every juncture of the process. Phil has most definitely gone above and beyond to ensure my needs were successfully realized, and I could not be happier with the outcome of his dedicated work on my behalf. I truly feel I have been represented by the best.

I recently hired Mr. Berger to represent my private equity firm, and could not be happier with my decision! He was honest and reliable; two attributes that one needs in a lawyer. He kept me up-to-date with legal procedure, and would go out of his way to thoroughly explain the matters with me. I'd recommend Mr. Berger to any colleague or client.

Katie M. and staff, including Educational Advocate Nicky M., were a blessing to our daughter and family throughout the entire advocacy experience. They were consistently kind, supportive, stable, hopeful, honest, trustworthy, and professional. Their intelligence, communication, and patience held us together during the complicated district transfer resulting from a positive and purposeful move. Our daughter was always important to them and they also included us as if we were part of the team. She remains at a school that is truly helping her thrive, and so we are forever grateful for the careful guidance all along the way. Everyone won in the end. Thank you. Amen. Parents Delaware County

Raffaele & Associates provided such a positive experience for our family. The firm represented us in a legal matter and additionally assisted with my son’s IEP. Since the day that Raffaele & Associates became involved, the school district has taken all of our requests seriously. Their attention to detail and knowledge has provided my son with a fantastic school experience to date. In regards to our legal matter, there are no words to describe the Raffaele & Associates attorney, Adrianna. She is kind, compassionate, competent, hardworking, quick to respond to emails, and an overall amazing person. We are so thankful for Raffaele & Associates!

We have used Doug in two separate capacities. He helped us with estate planning in 2018, where we updated our Wills, Power of Attorney, Medical Directives, and Trust. He provided great advice and made the process very easy. Starting 2019, Doug has served as business counsel for my consulting business, a sole proprietor LLC. He helped me with all the start-up documents, reviewed contracts, and helps me maintain "best practices" for corporate requirements.

I have been using Mr. Humes' legal services since 1990, for all of my half-dozen businesses that I own and control - businesses locally and a nationwide business. And personal matters as well. Here are just some of the legal services that I have received from Mr. Humes throughout the years: Drafting Tenant and Landlord Leases, Lease Negotiations (represented me as a tenant and landlord - on separate occasions, on both sides of the issues), Real Estate Transactions (bought and sold), Court Representation (only once, thank god! That's because before I started using he's leases. NO MORE OFF THE SHELF LEASES FOR ME, thank you!! And NO more problem since then - commercial and residential leases), Real Estate Planning, Formation of Corporations, Contract Negotiations, and many many more! I find him to be extremely knowledgeable in the field that he's in. Highly recommended, for both business or personal legal services!

There are so many reasons why he was not a good choice for me….. Besides over billing, cursing at you, not returning or answering emails, etc.etc….. I can not list all the reasons to look elsewhere in a short paragraph. Just do yourself a huge favor and CHOOSE ANYONE BUT W. Frank Johnson. I had a simple case, but his decisions and advice have severely ruined my case and custody time with my child.

I would not recommend Frank Johnson if you want an amicable divorce. If you’ve seen the movie Marriage Story, Frank will remind you of the lawyer portrayed by Laura Dern—looking for an opportunity to draw out the legal fees as long as possible by making the process as toxic as possible. He advertises on his website the he got an alcoholic woman custody and made the spouse pay his fees. In my experience he took a scenario in which my ex and I asked for equal time with the kids and roughly equal expenses with a pre-agreed split of assets and then he made such significant threats about what he could do in court that then turned it into tens of thousands in fees with no actual court hearing and no end in sight to the expensive negotiations. There are better options for your kids and your future than this man. If you have kids, rather than listen to him, agree to split the child tax credits, each claim head of household, agree to perfectly equal time or the courts will penalize you, and agree to equal share of expenses and assets. That’s what my parents did and our lives were better for it.

Larry has a unique ability to quickly get to the point of the matter and is not litigious. He evaluates the pros and cons and may advise many times to try and settle as opposed to going to court. It is costly but he looks at the big picture and the road ahead for his client. He recommended one of the best malpractice lawyers in Philadelphia for me. I will be forever grateful

I had a million dollar inheritance in 2016. This lawyer billed me $28,000 for two months of misrepresentation which resulted in my illegal eviction from the home which I inherited. Later I received less than 8% of my inheritance while most of it went to the con artists who evicted me to steal the home which I inherited. An eviction lawsuit by those two should have been dismissed as misuse of civil proceedings as that lawsuit was NOT brought by my landlord. I had a lease and my RENT was prepaid for a year. I lost all my clothes and belongings in my home when I was LOCKED OUT by the two plaintiffs. Instead of asking the PA court to dismiss this IMPROPER lawsuit under PA landlord tenant act (1952), Koropey continued the hearings in 2016 only to pad his hourly billings including hotel stays and travel to beach resorts 100 miles away on my dime. Upon eviction I fired him yet he continued to bill me for months after being fired and also added 8% interest which eventually he filed to collect in an OUT OF STATE COURT and never served me notice of that hearing. I lost by default in a Court 106 miles away from the homeless shelter Koropey representation landed me in 2016. He is heartless.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
