We needed our wills and revocable trust updated and selected Hazelwood Law for the job. Very satisfied with the thoroughness and responsiveness that Chuck brought to the task. He went beyond our expectations in the products and service he provided.

Dear Chuck and Sonya, I want to thank you both for the excellent assistance in helping me with the selling of my property. I wish you the very best and will reach out to you for future services, when needed.

Nick was one of the best attorney's I have had the pleasure to work with. He handled the estate for my son, after my son's father passed away last year. Nick worked tirelessly to make sure my son's best interests were always placed at the top of his priorities. In what was a tragic situation, Nick helped my son and I through the entire estate process, often taking on more responsibilities than he should have. I honestly cannot say enough great things about him.

Mr. Williams was the consummate professional, from the moment we met in his office. He took time to understand my personal situation and related concerns, prior to putting pen to paper. Mr. Williams has a very endearing, warm personality which lends itself nicely when making difficult decisions that impact family dynamics and future generations. I highly recommend Mr. Williams for his expertise, and caring demeanor; an often rare combination in the legal profession. The estate planning he executed for me was exceptionally well done and thorough. Family members have peace of mind, as these legal documents are in their possession for decisions they may encounter one day.

Mr. Williams is very knowledgeable and informative. He took the time to listen and answer all our questions. Our phone calls and emails were responded to promptly, and he kept us informed throughout the case. Mr. Williams offered us trustworthy counsel and aggressive representation, and was the driving force that kept the other attorneys involved moving forward. We enjoyed working with Mr. Williams, and should we need legal representation again, we will most certainly hire Mr. Williams.

Can't say enough about how much we appreciate Mr. Haynes' attention to our tax matter. Very knowledgeable, and was able to calm our nerves by giving us a clear understanding of the issues, actions to resolution, and what to expect at each step. We are very happy with the final outcome!

My wife and I sold a property and reported the capital gain incorrectly to the IRS. We went to Russ and within a few minutes he knew what happened and what needed to be done. He did not hesitate describing the situation and his confidence put me at ease. Russ indicated we could complete the necessary forms ourselves and send to the IRS. We opted for Russ' help. The issue was resolved quickly and Russ kept in touch with us each time an action occurred, generally from the IRS. He saved our butts and we appreciate it.

When I met Russ, I owed a lot in taxes, and had poor representation. Russ Haynes gave it to me straight, and laid out a strategy to get through it, safely and deliberately. In the end, he was extraordinary, saving me tons of money, and allowing me to work with the IRS, with a plan that worked. After a long process, and many payments to the IRS, I made it through. When it comes to taxes, you don't want to mess around. Russ is the best, and he will get you through it. Don't waste your time with anyone else who is not professional, and doesn't understand the situation better than Russ.

Grateful for the Outstanding Service! Due to the negligence of certain IRS employees, I was unfortunately hit with a huge penalty for Form 3520. This terrible situation haunted me for three years, leaving me filled with anxiety and helplessness. Thankfully, I found this incredible legal team! With their professionalism and exceptional legal expertise, they fought for my justice, successfully correcting the IRS's mistake, and ultimately got rid of the unjust fine. Throughout the entire process, they remained highly professional and patient. Not only did they have a deep understanding of my case, but they also constantly provided me with support and confidence. Their efficient and meticulous work restored my faith and helped me finally escape from this undeserved ordeal. I am sincerely grateful to them for winning this tough battle for me—they truly saved my life. If you need legal assistance, I highly recommend this team. They are absolutely trustworthy!

I cold called Burton Haynes for tax advice based on the strength of his resume and am thrilled that I did. He is a rare combination of legal skill, deep and on-point experience, responsiveness, empathy, and good cheer. For those in DC metro and beyond, he and his colleagues would be a superb choice to handle your individual or corporate tax issues.

Never really focused on my case as I was out of state. Accident happen Dec 2014 and was finally settled Dec 2023 via arbitration. Was set for 100k only awarded 20k. Lawyers did not take their portion as to how long case took. Personally I believe they dropped the ball and didn’t focus on my case at all. Did not take their portion of settlement as they knew they didn’t do their job and was a disservice to me. Went through 4 different legal clerks, had to send all emails / documents to there office 4 times as they had no records of emails I had sent concerning medical appointments and bills. Had to call multiple times as never would return calls. It was always a task to get a hold of my lawyer. Always had excuses as to my case not being worked on to get settled; trying to get answers from insurance company and their lawyers, COVID, people leaving firm, or terminated, one of their partners having a heart attack. It was one thing after another with this law firm in trying to get my case settled. I would not recommend their law firm to anyone. Took ten years to get case settled and didn’t win my case as they said they would. I had to go get letters from my doctors. I had to do all the leg work for my lawyers and they didn’t properly represent me as far as I am concerned. As I said out of pity they forfeited their salary as they knew they did not do their job. Poor representation of a law firm.

No communication and unwilling to schedule consult in the future. Were all busy I do understand this, but I wasted 6 weeks thinking I was going to have an opportunity to provide my case. Two stars because the lawyer finally decided to talk to me on the phone as he "ran out for a deposition".

This law firm is unprofessional, rude, will eat up your retainer, and bill you for services not performed. I paid them the retainer and in one week I was given another bill for over $2500.00. A day before my trial they threatened to withdraw and demanded another retainer even though I had no outstanding bills. BEWARE!!!

I paid over $15,000 for a child custody case that she put very little effort in. Not even 6 months after her encouraging me to settle before trial, the other parent was charged with three felonies for a violent crime committed in front of the child. We all deserve better representation. She will over charge and you bill statements need to be checked every month.

Jeff was unresponsive, missed a crucial deadline, and ran my bill 5x over what he estimated. He claims he's in the golden years of his practice, which led me to believe he has a lot of experience. Turns out, he never practiced family law until recently. Horrible waste of money for a matter that had only minor issues.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
