William has been my lawyer for years to deal with my bankruptcy and was very patient and kind through a difficult time. He is also prompt on taking or returning calls. I would highly recommend him to anyone questioning the bankruptcy process.

I struggled for years with the concept of beginning the bankruptcy process. I wish I had consulted with William sooner than I did! He talked me through the logistics of bankruptcy, walked me through the legal process and eased my discomfort with confronting my financial situation. Most importantly I was given peace of mind throughout the experience and was very thankful for that.

I was so impressed with Jessica. She didn't push any additional services upon me. Her prices were more than reasonable. Her fees were also structured as a flat fee so I knew the cost up front. In fact, her fee was so in line that I felt a little guilty for all the work she performed for me. I will recommend her to anyone who will listen. She will be my go to attorney from now on.

Jessica spent ample time with us, answering all of our questions and ensuring that she was creating a plan that fit our unique circumstances and needs. She did a great job explaining the options for our plan as well as what the options meant. She also ensured that our plan was funded; no detail was left out. In addition to her professionalism, I really appreciated how personable and caring she was. I would highly recommend Jessica to everyone!

I have had Peter as my attorney for going on 3 years. He has done an excellent job. He has excellent attention to detail and will use those details to help your case. He has helped me protect my daughter from her very abusive mother. Yes, I am a MAN and have Primary Placement and I am the Primary Custodial Parent to my daughter. In a state that always leans towards the woman, he stayed the course. He is honest and upfront on what to expect. If you tell him you are in for the long haul, he will continue to represent you with professionalism and always be honest with you. My divorce is over, but my ex-wife continues to be in contempt of court orders, Pete continues to represent me and has done a job that I do not think any other attorney could do.

Renier Hotopp law helped my now ex-wife and I navigate our divorce the way WE wanted to. Their care and compassion was much deeper than we expected. They were timely, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. It was a difficult situation that brought us to them but they made it as simple, easy, and enjoyable as it could be… for a divorce. I’m not planning to divorce again but if I had to, I’d definitely go through it with Renier Hotopp Law. Absolutely fantastic to work with.

My experience with all of the staff at Rebier Hotopp Law was both professional and personable. I made clear that I wanted to keep all potential approaches as low-level as possible. Lindsay listened to everything that I had to say, and I believe that she helped to develop a realistic strategy. I'll be reaching out in the future, if needed.

We were looking for an attorney for a grandparents visitation case. The office called me within a half hour of sending out my email to set up a consultation. When I spoke with Mary on the phone, she was positive, knowledgeable and very professional.

Mine was a grandparent's visitation rights case - not typically granted in Wisconsin unless there is a death involved. My case didn't fit "typical" fashion. Attorney Poletti (Mary) did a fantastic job for me. As an attorney, she's well educated, well informed and she knows the correct interpretation of the laws - and because she had informed me of what I needed to show to the court, I was granted temporary grandparent's visitation rights. Mary is also very understanding, fair, honest and up front with the facts. I knew when I began the process that it was probably not going to be a win/win situation for me - however, I gained an extra year with my granddaughter and I learned a couple of priceless lessons. If you are seeking the best attorney in Wisconsin's Family Court - you can stop now - you've found her!

For those of you who are looking for a professional to help guide you through your worst days stay clear of Brett Ekes and his law firm. I was a former client and fired him part of the way through because he is difficult to get a hold off, he was unprepared to represent me in court, he tried to not present evidence or give the commissioner reasonable doubt and I had to force him to present it. Another attorney I hired admitted that he should have done more for me in that court. Brett never tried to prepare me for court or even told me what to expect. When he would attempt to perform his rebuttal it court he took a weak stance and gave very little detail if any which resulted in my children being taken from me. I had no idea where I was supposed to be for court, when I would call his office, non of his staff knew where he was nor could they get in touch with him. When he would get back into his office he would never call back. I always had to track him down to get in touch with him. His paralegals couldn't answer any questions that I would have and there is no other family lawyer at this firm to try and help out with any questions. He would send me encrypted emails of which I told him multiple times I didn't know the password so 2 days before court he gave up trying to send me the document that was required for that court date. I wouldn't recommend Brett or his firm to anyone. Run the other way or you will regret it.

Although Erika has experience in family court she has a very limited knowledge and experience of criminal law. I could not have been more dissatisfied with the criminal defense I received, and not just her defense but lack of basic respect. Payment was, in my opinion, her top priority. After retaining her services the first thing she does is have you sign a contract that obligates you to pay her no matter her performance. As a result she has no motivation to do the best job possible. From her inability to simply return phone calls to general lack of professionalism. I would never choose to have her represent me again EVER. If you do choose her to defend you ask questions. What similar cases have you won? Have you passed the bar exam? I hope this helps you make the best decision as possible in regards to who you should put the fate of your situation.

My attorney failed to inform me of vital information in order to prepare for each step in my divorce process. This lack of preparation was likely due to the fact that she would meet me 5-10 minutes before any court appearance and not tell me how we would proceed. I would also get an email from her at the most 30 minutes before my scheduled court appearance in which there was no time to strategize. She never offered the records I provided her of my husband's travel schedule, and she never pursued the fact that he failed to disclose one of his checking accounts. Basically, there was never any burden of proof placed on my husband despite the fact that I had information that exposed my husbands lies.

I used her for my divorce attorney years ago. She fought for nothing for me and basically told me to give everything to my soon to be ex. As long as she got paid, she didn’t really care. A few years later she, or someone, screwed up the billing and even though I had quite a bit left to pay, my balance went to 0. I never questioned, she never fixed, and she got what she had coming to her. 0, which is what I got out of my divorce.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?

  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
