Travis Carr (& Cindy) did an amazing job helping me to change my life! He was honest and foreword with me on my chances by taking him on with the case I presented him. Yet, his understanding and compassion towards me was second to none, and I can’t tell you how awesome it was to have his passion on my side. I truly thank Travis for the way he would talk to me in a matter-of-fact way, keep my head focused on the important stuff, and know how to guide the case in court to help open the judge’s eyes to the real situation. Seeing Travis work in court was like watching someone in their true element. I’m so very thankful for the experience even though I don’t wish court on anyone! The victory dance that followed was well worth it! God bless you and your team, Travis, the way you have blessed my family and me. Thank you!

Smith Law recently completed a revocable trust for us. It was a complex undertaking. This very warm, but completely professional law office made it as painless as possible. Joanna has patience, & superb communication skills. She sought our opinions on matters & restated them succinctly. It was obvious that she wanted to help with hard decisions. We made changes, Joanna remained flexible throughout the process. Her assistant, Rachel, stayed amazingly organized & professional. How she handled new copies of changes instantly is a mystery! Thank you Joanna & Rachel. We highly recommend this Law office for estate legal needs.

I could not recommend this practice more! Aaron Pembleton and Kathy Tate were so helpful through such a terrible point in my life. I knew and was confident through the entire process that they had everything handled and did a terrific job thoughout the whole case. If you are looking for an attorney to represent you, you do not have to look any further! Aaron was very helpful throughout the entire case, always helped me understand what was going on and was always available to answer questions and help me understand anything that I didnt.

Hired Aaron Pembleton to represent me for some trouble I got into. He was the only attorney in the area who returned my call. He is great. I feel he was fair in his billing, and I'm very happy with the outcome of my case.

This attorney was my daughter's guardian ad litem in a juvenile delinquency case many years ago. A guardian ad litem is not allowed to file motions in juvenile deliquency cases but she did exactly that and while she is supposed to remain neutral in such cases, all she did was file motion after motion and use her attorney status to keep my daughter and myself apart. Don't waste your money, she will not have your best interest at heart.

I got a pretty serious charge when i was 19/20 yrs old, I had a drug addiction& Roger stuck his neck out for me, he convinced the judge to get me into rehab(after i had already blown through all the chances the judge had given me) he saved my life. And because of him caring about my future& wellbeing he saved my life. Bevause of him I am still sober today and I am 28 years old. If not for Roger I'd be either on prison locked up or a casket dead. Thank ypu Roger for everything you've done.

I have been dealing with a dependency and neglect case. Roger is court appointed. He seems only concerned with collecting the county check. He has not done a single thing i asked him to do. He is just simply sending me through the motions of such a case. I cant believe he even calls himself an attorney. He has blocked me from emailing him or changed his email without informing me.

As far as having an Attorney, I should have just paid his paralegal Deb. She was the one I talked to, explained things to me and looked things up. Not only did Larsen cause me to lose my children, but he didn't even know what he was defending me for. Then didn't even care enough to fix it. When he decided to withdraw from my case, his paralegal Deb told me a month after he already had, and he didn't even bother to call, then I had a court date I didn't even find out about till 4 days before. I personally think that since it was HIS mistake that caused my ex to take my children then it should be his responsibility to fix it. However I have gotten a different Attorney and if I were you, I wouldn't hire a Attorney with no sense of responsibility.

November 13, 2017 consult $150. The phone consultation was a waste of my time and money. Dan was arrogant and kept asking me why my neighbor would want that little strip of land. That there must be something I was not telling him. He was more occupied with wanting $1500 and up retainer because I live in another county. I would not recommend this arrogant lawyer to anyone. His secretary was sweet and easy to get along with but Dan was not.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
