Mr. Zachary Elliott: I want to thank you for your help in my Divorce case two years ago and my recent custody case. Due to your expertise and help both cases were settled in a timely manner with satisfaction on both sides without having to go into court. You answered any questions that I had with honesty regardless if it was the answer I wanted to hear. You had patience with my many phone calls and questions. When I called your office I either talked to your assistant right away or you called me back by the end of the business day. You did an excellent job with both of my cases and it is greatly appreciated. If I need any further assistance I will not hesitate to call you and will recommend you to anybody that needs help in legal matters. Sincerely, Donald J

I'm going through a tough time with my siblings on accounts of my father's estate and Paula helped me understand my situation and told me some great advice. I felt genuine concern and like she put more effort than I could afford and I really appreciate her help. I would definitely recommend hiring this law firm because these people care! Money spent with them would go to good people and you can rest assured your best interest is in mind.

Mr Joel Elliott was hired in a divorce case after being recommended as one of the best in Canton. He turned out to be horrible. Being a male client, he told us he would do what was necessary to get a favorable settlement dealing with three small children. After being caught in the courthouse with the opposing lawyer, slapping each other on the back and making jokes about the case, and then lieing about what he was doing, he was fired. It took over a month for him to deliver an itemized bill. He ensured he billed for almost every dollar’s worth of money that he had been paid in advance. He still has not reimbursed the remainder to this date. His staff was caught lieing about him being in and phone calls or emails were not returned. He is a prime example of why lawyers are thought badly of. Take your money and do nothing.

My disability case is just dragging on and on and on. There has been ZERO communication between us and the attorney. The para-legals didn't return my call or help when I called back. After 6 months we are still "in the filing stage"!? I have an attorney but right now I feel like I am in this by myself or until back-pay maxes out at around $7000 as it does here in Texas (meaning there would be no more $ to make from my case). I will update this if things change and progress is made so if I haven't then it hasn't. Honestly I think my rating is conservative considering I never hear anything from the law firm and haven't even spoken to my attorney.

I hired Mr. Spruiell for my divorce case sometime at the end of 2014. I was leery about hiring him after I read the one review on this website. However, after seeking more referrals from friends and family, he was strongly recommended to me. I set up my free consultation and was very pleased with his blunt and honest advice. I didn't have to wait a year or more to get my divorce. Mr. Spruiell's office was "on the ball" when it came to the statutory waiting period and kept me updated periodically. His secretary was very easy to interact and work with. I did ask about staff or office issues that I had "heard" when I spoke with Mr. Spruiell in my consultation. Apparently, his secretary that he had prior to the end of 2014 would withhold information that client's would leave for him and Mr. Spruiell would have no idea that an issue was even occurring. Once this came to light and a new secretary was hired, he has had no complaints from what I can see from my research. I would HIGHLY recommend Mr. Spruiell to anyone in need of legal services. The review posted on this website is very misleading.

Very pleased upon our first and second meetings. However his office staff was not bright at all. I had to notify them when my 60 day waiting period was up. I also had to notify them of numerous mistakes. The lady actually argued with me and dismissed my concerns. Now I find out my concerns were valid. They gave the attorney general the wrong address and I still haven't received my paperwork from them. Due to her mistakes I also am not receiving the correct amount of child support. I have emailed and written a letter and still have not received a response from him. I have called twice requesting why I haven't heard from him, only to be told a letter has already been mailed yet no letter ever comes.

Beware of this lawyer, he takes your money and then you never hear from him again. He dodges your calls and doesn't communicate. This lawyer doesn't take direction from his clients. He simply takes their money and that's it.

Before she was appointed my attorney I had spoken to a family rights organization and they recommend that I ask any lawyer representing me if they would be willing to work with a family rights lawyer...well this I did and to my detriment with this attorney...she immediately became irrate and defensive screaming at me that NO, she would never work with a family rights lawyer because they are a treat to her livelihood. I was appalled. But at the time, I had no choice but to take my chances with her and her husband Matthew Dunn who also practices alongside her, vice versa. Upon arrival to her office, her secretary greeted me with this "warm" salutation. "You are the reason why CPS has your children". This greeting was totally unacceptable as she knew nothing about my case in which I'm totally innocent. I was greatly offended by her actions. It appears that no work is done on my case and no calls were ever returned. Her secretary was primarily giving me counsel which was not competent at all, she is not an attorney. My case was a CPS, I witnessed MY lawyers, both and her husband immediately responding and answering and or returning calls to CPS but never returning my calls nor setting up a time to discuss my case. They appeared at the time of the hearings only minutes before my case was heard. At one point, this was the same time when she called in less than a day before my hearing, by she I am referring to her secretary asks me if I have been working my services and that's it. Why didn't her office know? As a matter of fact, no services were offered and CPS were moving to terminate. Why didn't she know? I could go on and on about her negligent in practises in my case alone. Upon seeking to write this review...I realized that others have had similar things to report about her law firm. It appears that each time a negative report is made there is one positive one written directly after it opposing what the last one said to a tee. So if I was a reader I would take notice of it and use better judgement.

I hired Emily to finalize our adoption. The biological mom signed away her rights so it should have been simple. It took Emily well over twice as long as it should have. Even had CPS and CASA asking what's the hold up. The problem seem to me that she only worked on your case after you called to see what was going on and you get charged every time you have to call or have to visit. There was a couple of errors in the paper work that took time to refile and a couple of filed papers that should not have been filed at all. Now I'm stuck trying to get the new social security card and birth certificate because Emily thinks that's not her problem even though the county clerk an other attorneys say it is. So it took twice as long, ended up charging more than what was told it would be, and didn't finish the job. I was holding out on writing a bad review but since she won't return my phone call, I guess I'm done with her.

This attorney and her assistants in her office are extremely wonderful! They got my family custody of our 4 year old son. They handled this case (just like every other case), very professional and caring. Custody cases are usually really stressful but they made this case, a lot easier to handle!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
