I met with a few attorneys before I hired Mr. Roles. He was well organized, professional and straight to the point of what he could do for me! Very tech savvy office, which was convenient for me, I love the digital world! Anytime I had a question, he would ANSWERED the phone, not at anytime I had to go though a gatekeeper. He is hands on! I was impressed on the services I received and would recommend him to anyone wants TOP NOTCH service!! I’m very particular and Mr. Roles exceeded my expectations. Do yourself a favor, HIRE him!

Mr. Benninga represented me in a misdemeanor case in Maryland and, as an out-of-state resident, I was concerned about the nature of my case. I would be disallowed from my profession if convicted and was unsure of how cumbersome an interstate trial would be. He assuaged my concerns immediately! I thought my case would be complicated but he maneuvered the nuances easily never even requiring me to make the 4 hour trip back to Maryland. My case closed successfully and I am forever grateful for his counsel!

We called the law firm, were lucky enough to have the Associate Matthew Crouch take on our case. Even on very short notice, he took lots of time to listen to the problem. He then explained the options, went into court and got a favorable outcome for us. We do not hesitate to recommend him.

Mrs. Lindner did a fantastic job helping me settle on two very complicated transactions. It was imperative that they close simultaneously to make sure all of my financing was approved. Her communication skills, expertise, and organization are unparalleled and gave me the result I needed. I would highly recommend her for all things Real Estate.

I worked with Marshall Long over a decade on a variety of legal, financial, and real estate projects. He was absolutely beyond reproach and a dedicated professional who never let me down. As a former state's attorney and aggressive advocate on both sides of the aisle, any client would do well to have this street-wise and courtroom savvy lawyer working for him or her.

Allie at the Law Office of Lynn Knight is a great attorney. Her office responded to my issues in a very prompt manner. Allie was extremely knowledgeable about every step of the process with my divorce and custody. She really took care of my needs and got me everything I asked for. She always responded if I had any questions about my case. I was prepared for a very long process but Allie made it easy and painless. I would recommend her for any divorce or custody cases.

Mr. Drummond made me feel at ease on the phone and in his office. He pays attention to detail, has a pleasant demeanor and gave us the facts and odds about our case; straight up, no chaser! He was an easy choice for my husband and I to agree on for our specific case and generally, moving forward, so long as we're in this neck of the woods, we will seek his expert legal advice in all areas as any arise...

I have another attorney handling a nothing case it’s civil Pam dukes and I showed her my evidence and she’s like ooo you need to show the public defender these .but you can’t get ahold of anybody and the lady who answers the phone is like ooooo well !!

Ms. Keogh is knowledgeable, professional, reasonable, and exceptional. She does not promise what she can not deliver! She gives you all the possible outcomes and works closely with you to strategize! Having worked with several big-name Attorneys in the past in one of the largest cities in the US, my expectations were high and Ms. Keogh not only met them but exceeded them. Her costs were reasonable. Her performance in the court room was perfect! I highly recommend her!!!! Additionally, I was appalled by the previous review! Isn’t it interesting that the review was made by an anonymous person?! Having had first hand representation experience with Ms. Keogh, I attach my name to this review because this review is legitimate!!! Ms. Keogh is the only attorney I will ever use on the Eastern Shore!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
