Mr. Bottner and his Associates were very responsive and professional in getting a successful dismissal of the charges. These charges would have seriously effected my job and family had I been found guilty. They worked diligently and I highly recommend their services.

Got hit by a drunk driver. I think God kept me from dying. While in the emergency room I instinctively asked my wife to call a lawyer. She contacted Andrew the next day. I was in the hospital about two weeks and after that out of work a good bit. My health insurance paid the bills, but they kindly told me that they expected to be paid back by the auto insurance and I was glad that Andrew was able to take care of that for me. About a year after the accident Andrew presented me with a rather large check, which made me quite happy. If this kind of thing happens to you the most important thing to do is always get medical treatment and always follow the doctor’s instructions. Keep track of all the money and time you spend getting medical treatment and let Andrew know how you feel. Overall, I’m very glad to have met Andrew and I’m grateful to my wife for choosing him

Mr. Skillman has been representing me for a few months now on a couple of legal issues. His knowledge and legal skills are outstanding as is his presence in the court room. The first court hearing was a win and the second case is still underway. However, I feel confident in the courtroom being represented by Mr. Skillman and would recommend him time and time again.

My husband and I hired Cameron Lefevre for a very difficult child custody case. I've never had a good interaction with an attorney until I met him. He is very knowledgeable of the laws in West Virginia.Cameron always made sure we understood everything. He was always very timely getting back to me when I emailed him about concerns that I had he always showed up for court early to go over everything with us before going into the courtroom. If I could give zero stars, I would. Eight years ago, Andrew Arnold caused the day of my final divorce hearing to be one of the worst days of my life. On a day that was already stressful and difficult, he made it so much worse with his callousness. He had not prepared me at all for the final hearing. I had almost zero communication from his office between the initial hearing and final hearing. We never met. We never discussed what I wanted. I didn't even know what alimony was when I walked into the final hearing. I was that unprepared. He and the other lawyer, Mr. Janelle, worked out an alimony deal. Three years at $300/month. I was told this was fair. I wasn't given ANY additional information. I later learned that it is more typical to get alimony for at least 1/2 the length of the marriage and I had been married for 12 years. I accepted the deal before the hearing, not knowing any better. During the hearing, the judge was explaining alimony in more detail. He said that if I accepted the lawyers deal, it couldn't be changed. But if I let him decide it, it could be altered due to changing life circumstances. I asked the judge for an example. At that point, Andrew Arnold asked the judge for a moment to speak with me in the hall. He didn't even let the judge answer. He took me out into the hall and started YELLING AT ME. He was furious that I was considering letting the judge set the alimony. He was furious that I had asked the judge a question because it made me look unprepared for court ( I definitely was). He said I obviously didn't trust him and that he wouldn't represent me unless I took the deal he had worked out. He threatened to walk out that moment if I didn't go along with his plan. I felt so humiliated and forced into something that I had no idea if I really wanted. Being screamed at by my own lawyer for asking a question in the courtroom was the last thing I had expected that day. I agreed to keep his deal because I didn't know what else to do. Mind you, this was also just 5 weeks after I had major surgery for colon cancer and I was still weak and in tremendous pain. I had thirty staples down my stomach. My lawyer really should've postponed the hearing altogether, but there we were. When we went back in the courtroom, the judge asked for my decision and I told him I accepted the lawyers deal. My lawyer very emphatically said "And I DIDN'T coerce you into that decision, right?" What was I supposed to say?? Of course you did!! You threatened to leave if I didn't take your deal. You were a monster. You made one of the worst days of my life. He also let my ex change the numbers at the last minute so he would pay less child support. For 6 years, my ex only had to pay $357/month (total for two kids) even though he made more than twice as much as me and I had the kids 55% of the time. We finally got it adjusted to what it should have been two years ago and he now pays $630 /month. But for 6 years I struggled to feed my kids and pay rent and buy the basics. At one point, a friend brought me gift cards from a church so I could buy groceries. With decent representation, I never would have been in that situation. Stay away from Andrew Arnold if you want a lawyer who actually cares about you and your future.

Wouldn't recommend Jim Kratovil Basically does nothing! Has a bad attitude, zero compassion and poor listening skills. I provided him with photographic evidence for my case and letters from witnesses proving I was the ACTUAL injured party, which he completely ignored and never presented to the court. Dont flatter yourself 🙄.... He did NOT get my case dismissed. I did that MYSELF after 18 months and completing the requirements of the court... SMH

Not only did his poor advice cost me a $18k in my court case as far as losing, it’s been over a year and I’m still cleaning up the mess that Patrick created for me. He’s very incompetent at his job, he didn’t even have the courtesy to return my calls/emails when I had realized how bad he screwed my case up. He basically encouraged me to agree to certain aspects of my divorce knowing they weren’t set in stone and had me under the impression the deal was far better than fighting for what I ACTUALLY wanted. Half the time he didn’t return my phone calls or emails and when he did he would always say “no update”… mostly because he wasn’t doing anything at all, proven by the fact I was able to do everything he was SUPPOSED to do, on my own in less than a month. I would not recommend him to anyone. I understand why he works so cheap, honestly, because it’s about all his “help” is worth.

This guy drafted a will for my Grandfather (actually several that he refused to allow the court or beneficiaries to look at) that a forensic handwriting expert and a state police officer says are forged. I put a bar complaint on him.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
