I can't tell you how happy I am with Jacob and the Reitan team! They were recommended to me by my county assistance worker. After my 1st consultation I was hopeful for the first time in months. Jacob told me to stop stressing that they would get to work on my claim and he was right, they started right away. I hired them on 9/22 and I received my award letter from SSA on 5/23. My first monthly check of over $3000 was deposited on 5/23. I was so excited! I was approved the first time through, no meetings or appeals required. My lawyer (Jacob) said he was shocked that I was approved the first time through. I truly believe that it was the incredible job that Jacob and the Reitan team did for me. I will never be able to thank them enough! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FIRM!!

Jacob Reitan was my disability lawyer. I was very pleased and encouraged from our very first meeting. He is very professional, courteous, friendly and he explains everything step by step. He is very thorough, he made sure we had everything we needed. His office staff is also very nice, very helpful and answers all of your questions. There were times I couldn't make it to his office due to my health, so we conducted appointments over the phone, which was very convenient. He was confident, positive and he was always reassuring me. We WON my case and I couldn't have done it without Jacob's expertise! Believe me, I tried! If you're thinking of or trying to apply for SSI/Disability, don't do it alone, hire Jacob Reitan and win your case! He is an excellent lawyer and I highly recommend him and his office! Thank you so much Jacob!! You have changed my life!

What I liked about Jacob was the briefing for my appeal hearing was detailed and had numourus Doctor notes. I also like the fact that he is very thorough when it comes to finding facts to prove why I should receive Ssdi. I did lose my case, yet I am confident that Jacob did his very best. I like that he wholeheartedly was supporting me all the way. I trust that he will do all he can to prove my case to the Appeal Council, in hope that they see something in my favor. The only thing I do not like is I am unable to understand reasons for denial. Jacob is patient when he explains things to me the best he can. He explained several things over and over again and has willing hands to do so. I'm sure not many lawyers would stand up for me the way Jacob does. Kudos.

Philip and Benjamin were very helpful through my entire personal injury claim. They got me a fair settlement and were always very kind and on top of everything through the entire process. Their communication with me was excellent throughout. I can not say enough about good things about my experience with Reitan Law Office.‎

I checked with my lawyer twice about the date of my hearing for it, and he gave me the wrong date both times which caused me to miss it. Rather than informing the courts of the mistake and requesting a new hearing, he told me to just proceed with the divorce as normal. I was so scared I fled from my home and was essentially homeless for a few months. He then continually advised me not to go to a homeless shelter, which left me trapped at a toxic friend's house where my daughter ended up abused more. I was hoping to have primary custody, or even supervision for my ex's time due to the neglect that had gone on, and he treated it like that was no big deal, and when my ex didn't agree, the lawyer didn't really fight for me, and told me to just alter my agreement to give ex more time, until we had exactly what my ex had asked for, and I felt like I had no say at all. Jim did not provide me with all of my options as his client. I was unaware of a Karon Waiver, I was the primary income earner, and I was never presented the option of having an "expert financial review" or "vocational evaluation" done on my Ex. I spoke to another Attorney who said I should have these two things done, and when I said that is what I wanted, my case was resolved very quickly and signed by the Judge about 3 weeks later. Jim is a very nice man, but I cannot recommend him as a Divorce Attorney.

Jim has always been so upfront about costs and what to expect during our custody case. I truly believe he has the children’s best interest in mind during everything. He is very responsive and walked me through everything. If you want a lawyer who truly cares, Jim is your guy! Can’t say enough good things about him.

She actually is an excellent attorney, but she let's the Carver County Child Protections unbelievable corruption pass before her eyes with no whistleblowing or even a heads up to her client. She knew I would lose and the corruption of Judge Cain, and Cindy Finch (purgering herself about the non existent " case plan") & the others. She pleaded that I shouldn't take it to trial because I would lose. I foolishly be lived in "justice". She didn't tell me about the federal financial incentive programs that gives workers huge bonus' for every child they adopt out. Even more if they are special needs, like mine. I never saw him again

Christopher Ross, does not return calls, does not meet the needs of public defender inmates in jail. Promised to call inmate, then said he would see inmate next day bcuz he'd be in court at McLeod Co. He never bothered to show up at all. Inmate still hasn't heard from him. He sounds VERY WET BEHIND THE EARS and doesn't know how to prioritize the importance of making contact with inmates especially when inmate is not getting their prescribed medication!! Basically doesn't have confidence as an attorney to do the job!!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
