This lawyer was fantastic. I will definitely go to him for all other matters. Not only was he awesome, he went out of his way to set up a payment plan for me to help me cover legal fees. He detailed every invoice so I knew what I was paying for and the services that were provided.

I would recommend him to any one in the New River Valley and surrounding areas. I was online looking for a website for his lawfirm and stumbled across this. I will be in touch with him soon.

Prompt, thorough, courteous from start to end. Everything was explained in a way that was easy to understand and had my mind at ease throughout the whole process. Any questions that did come up were met with an almost instantaneous response time from Leane- a true asset to the firm. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this team time and time again.

Dennis was my attorney during my recent divorce. He was easy to talk to and always kept me informed of what was happening throughout the process. He was very open and honest and always responded in a timely manner whenever I had a question. If you are in need of an attorney look no further. I highly recommend Dennis for any of your legal needs. He will go to bat for you and work hard to find a fair and equitable resolution to whatever issues you may have. Thank you Dennis for keeping me grounded during this very difficult time.

I hired Mr. Nagel for a reckless driving charge (87/65) that I incurred while travelling on I-81. Mr. Nagel was able to get the charge knocked down to defective equipment. Mr. Nagel was also very professional as he would respond to emails in a timely manner and would explain why he did everything. Overall Mr. Nagel exceeded my expectations in everyway possible, and I would highly recommend his services to anyone seeking representation. I thank him to save me from reckless driving charge.

I hired this attorney to represent me in a case. I really needed a lawyer that would try the case. Mr. Nagel talked a lot about how the other party had several witnesses an they wouldn't be able to hold their story together. I went to see him twice about concerns I had. He reassured me that he would get it done. Well Court day, an he turned pussycat. He had all kinds of excuses about why to not try the case an take a deal. And at that point you are stuck an cannot do anything about it. Of all the attorneys I have hired in the past he provided the least service. I consider my money wasted an could have probably represented myself an got the same thing or better. Beware when using this lawyer! I was thoroughly disappointed in his service. Never again.

Dennis Nagel has been my "attorney in shining armor" for almost 7 years with ongoing legal issues starting with my divorce, which cascaded into multiple child custody and support issues and hearings over the years. Dennis was the BIG HERO for myself and my son just a few weeks ago when he successfully argued an appeal to the Circuit Court regarding the custody of my son. Dennis is keenly efficient at what he does. In court, he is able to make strong arguments that are clear and concise, which I believe the courts appreciate. Outside of court, Dennis is very quick to respond to emergency emails (I'm talking like within 5 minutes of you sending an "SOS/MAYDAY" type of issue through email...on a SUNDAY NIGHT...kind of "very quick"). Also, in office meetings are very thorough and to the point, yet, Dennis makes you feel better about what you are worried about when he is discussing your case with you. Yet, he never sugar coats anything. Dennis is an attorney who tells it like it is and you always know where you and your case stands with him at the helm. Dennis Nagel is an attorney that doesn't waste a client's time and money just like he wouldn't waste his own. Dennis listens and learns quickly a client's needs and then EXECUTES the case in a way that is like a brain surgeon would perform surgery on a brain....with precision and deftness. With Dennis, there may not be a ton of unnecessary and expensive correspondence or discussion, like I have experienced with other attorneys before I found Dennis. But, Dennis is an attorney who KNOWS what needs to be done and gets it done. Dennis Nagel is fair, he is frank, and he is an absolute expert in his field. Anyone who needs an attorney in Dennis Nagel's specialties should be SO LUCKY as to have him agree to take their case. I can't say enough wonderful things about him and his work!

Ryan Hamrick is that kind of attorney. He does not care that his responsibility as an ad litem is to fully assess the situation and fight for kids rights. If you have the choice to NOT have this guy represent you then I highly suggest you go with someone else. The fact that he’s running for judge tells me everything I need to know about the Mt Dew fueled toothless mountain law that runs the “Commonwealth “ of Virginia.

I hired wade for a custody case where I was seeking custody of my daughter from her mentally ill mother. I paid Wade in full up front. I was given a time line of 6 weeks to move the case through the courts. I emailed him over several weeks to get an update and attempted to call his office as well and no response. Finally by chance he answered one day about 2 months out and said he would call me within 24 yours with a court date. 4 weeks later no court date. After a total of 6 emails and the same amount of phone calls and voice messages I get an email apologizing and giving me a court date 1 week from the date he emails me. How inconsiderate is that of an attorney. I am not sure of how he is in court because we didn't make it that far but he is horrible at communication and follow-up.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
