Mr. Kleiner was referred to me by another client and friend of Mr. Kleiner who in typical N.J. fashion told me, "Call Larry! He is a good kid!" As I am a Southerner, I often find the diminutive use of the language mystifying. The phrase used by my friend would have a completely different meaning in the Southern vernacular. Thus my first comment would be, "Mr. Kleiner is a fine younger attorney!" Over the past 4 years I have found him to be anything but a "kid" or a "child". He is an excellent Attorney with an exceptional moral, legal personal ethical standard. I have have had disputes and disagreements with him, about matters ("which rightly or wrongly"), I felt needed to be addressed. To my surprise, he responded unlike I would have expected any attorney to reply. Rathet than becoming defensive, irrate or hostile toward me. He apologized and calmly said, "If you are unhappy with me, I will help you find another attorney. I treasure your friendship more than my fee and I hope you can see that this is why we are doing this, at this time." Never has he responded to me as many, (if not most attorney's or men, in the heat of the moment) would do. Rather almost immediately, he or I would apologize as friends should do, under stress, pain and suffering! We are in the middle of a long and difficult case and my emotional and physical pain has caused me act in a manner which I would probably "fire" myself! Mr. Kleiner has been an attorney, friend and counselor when I needed more than simply a legal representative. Any criticism I have might be in senseless delays of this states no fault insurance laws and the undue suffering it has caused me. I don't know enough to honestly direct my frustration and pain at the faulty legal system in this state or the attorney. But given his nature and demeanor, I think fault lies not with him but with this irrational abuse by the insurance companies. I hope we will make some law here because this is beyond acceptable, and borders on the criminal abuse of power by a private industry! If a personal, competent, and conscientious attorney is what you want, hire Mr. Lawrence Kleiner!

Mr. Kleiner and his his team were referred to me by a friend. Couldn’t have been any happier with the services they provided me with during my divorce. Mr. Kleiner not only was very helpful and on point as far as turnaround time with the court date, but he is very down to earth and easy to talk with.

Excellent experience working with the firm. Communication with counsel and the staff were forthcoming so I didn’t have to chase for answers. Everything was well prepared and was pleased with not only the outcome but the way it was handled by Mr Kleiner and his team. Highly recommend the firm!

My teenage son and I came to know real estate attorney Susana Gutierrez Manna, LLC, through our wonderful realtor, Liza Rogala, and they worked together like a dream team in enabling us to sell our 2 bedroom and 2 bathroom apartment in the cooperative building known as Mediterranean North, in Fort Lee, NJ, in 2024. For those of you who are unfamiliar with selling an apartment in a cooperative apartment building complex, it a very complicated, time-consuming, bureaucratic as well as frustrating process with the need for sellers and buyers as well as their realtors and real estate attorneys and movers etc. to comply with archaic and seemingly-endless not to mention illogical rules and regulations. It can be nerve-wracking and infuriating at times for sellers and buyers and the teams of people assisting those sellers and buyers in navigating the required real estate procedures they are inherently obliged to adhere to in order to sucessfully achieve their real estate goals. We found Susana Gutierrez Manna, LLC, to be the kindest and most patient as well as polite real estate attorney we had ever encountered. She kept her calm and patience throughout our professional engagement with her from February to May 2024 to sell our apartment in preparation for our impending relocation to another US state. The same can be said about Janet who works with Susana and who replied to my many queries when Susana was not immediately available to respond. To put things into perspective, I wanted to point out that Mediterranean North has an extremely complicated and excessively bureaucratic administrative set up with its domineering and overbearing building management team, cooperative board and cooperative board attorney's office and their unnecessarily rigid and ridiculously archaic rules and regulations that must be complied with in order for any real estate transactions to commence, proceed and be concluded. At times, it felt like we were cautiously and with much trepidation trying to carefully navigate a perilous journey through a proverbial and extremely dangerous minefield. Susana never lost her cool and she as well as Janet working seamlessly with our realtor, Liza Rogala from Christies International, to assist my son and me with the eventual closing on the sale of the apartment we had purchased at Mediterranean North so that we could relocate to another state. Thank you very much, Susana and Janet! Thank you very much to Liza for finding and engaging the services of the Law Office of Susana Gutierrez Manna, LLC for my son and me! Thank you very much to Liza, Susana and Janet for working hand-in-hand with each other to enable my son and me to finally conclude the sale of our apartment at Mediterranean North! We could not have done it without the "Dream Team" of Susana, Janet and Liza!

I am so grateful to have been recommended Susana as our legal representative to purchase a property. Her work ethic and due diligence is nothing short of amazing. Susana went above and beyond to ensure all of the documentation was in accordance with local laws and gave us the confidence in the buying process ensuring title and any pending matters were settled. I will be using her for any real estate transactions going forward. Thank you Susana!

If I could give Donna less than one star, I would. She "represented" me during my divorce. I was the plaintiff. She told me she would have my ex's lawyer write the divorce agreement so I wouldn't have to pay, and then ended up charging ME for it. I was NEVER notified that I exceeded my retainer. She didn't send me one invoice during the entire process. The only way I found out was when she handed me an UNITEMIZED bill with the amount that I still "owed" her the second I stepped out of the courtroom right after my divorce was finalized. It was such a difficult day - no compassion. I had to ask her for itemized copy, and that amount and the amount on the unitemized invoice were different!!! Poor record keeping. I needed to refinance my house to pay off my exhusband, and she told me that she would represent me (because she had a title company already and it would be easier according to her???), knowing full well I didn't need a lawyer to refinance. Once again, she tried to get more money from me. She was completely unprofessional, and showed up a half an hour late at least to court on the day of my divorce - and charged me for that time. I absolutely DO NOT recommend Donna. She was completely unprofessional, promises things she doesn't deliver, did not act on my behalf, does not keep good records, will not tell you if you exceed your retainer, will try to convince you that you need her services when you really don't, and she has no compassion. If you need a lawyer - use my ex's - Bruce.

We hired this attorney to handle an action against a builder doing construction at an adjacent property who entered our fenced in backyard and made changes to our property without our permission when nobody was home. In short, this lawyer's communications and judgment were very poor. She was terrible with follow-up, dropped the ball when there was an opportunity to settle the case, failed to return phone calls and emails for over a month after she blew the first settlement offer, and after the defendant did not appear in court for the scheduled hearing before the Civil court judge she failed to file for a judgement as she was supposed to and promised. The disregard, discourtesy, and incompetence of this lawyer were as bad and even more frustrating than the offending actions of the builder who trespassed and made a mess of our property in the first place. Stay away.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
