I first meet Kate when she was teaching Criminal Justice at the local college. I know her now as a lawyer. She is someone you can put your trust in. If you have a case with her, you can count on her to devote the time needed to win your case and she almost usually wins. She is also very knowledgeable as aspects of the law.

After five months of being unable to find a lawyer to represent me in getting the Eugene, Lane County Circuit Court to amend their physically impossible requirement, I found Kate Dyer. The Court routinely sentences people to attend a class held in a second story building with no elevator or other access. As I have multiple, long-standing disabilities, medically documented going back forty years, I could not do what the Court ordered. For all those months, calling over three hundred Oregon lawyers, I could not obtain a lawyer. Nor was the Judiciary or Courthouse personnel the least bit helpful as to how I could get this problem solved. Finally, I found Kate Dyer. Her kind, gracious advice was invaluable! She is the most kind, caring, brilliant and generous person and Civil Rights lawyer. Thanks to her emotional and legal support, the problem is now solved. I can not recommend her highly enough. There aren't words.

My name is Nicole Clain. Had to go through my daughters account to post this.. I give this place 1 star because of my personal experience with my lawyer Drew Betts. She is very new to the game and obviously knows very little about how the court system works. She never once even asked me for any evidence for my case, I just provided some because I knew we needed it and thank god I did. I had to call and leave multiple messages with her to ever even get a call back. I literally lost everything because of her. Because she wasn’t prepared with the right questions or knew what the judge was actually looking for. I lost custody of my son to his drunk, unpredictable dad. Who can’t even be bothered to pick his son up from school when he is sick. I beg u to find another more experienced lawyer!!

Lori is a private attorney that was hired by the Coos County public Defenders office for case overloads. My original attorney was unable to proceed with my case for technical reasons. From the time Lori took control of my case, she demonstrated the type of intelligence that every defendant hopes for. She helped me get my case finalized and made my release from custody happen very quickly! I can only say thanks to you Lori, I was able to go home to my family and I'm grateful for that. I recommend Lori if you ever find yourself in the cross hairs of the law!

I'd gotten myself into an unusual legal situation that could have easily gotten sideways. I was fortunate that James Monsebroten had the time to help. He understood my concerns and he studied my case. During the next appointment with Mr. Monsebroten, he got right to business, he began showing me why he liked two options, and explained to me the possible outcomes of each. The next day I was able to make a very well informed, clear headed, decision. He took that decision and represented me very well. The result was a fair and favorable outcome. Certainly a professional. I would ask for his help again.

If I could have given this worthless waste of space a like less than A0I would have but I can't so while this man is on my retaining money, he shows up to my court date and he gives the wrong case to the judge. He's saying that my wife was doing something with my brother. That's not the case at all. It's literally just a custody battle. And then my wife ex-wife turned into some papers and did it all discreet and weird, like and oh, mister monster brought in. Never once caught on, do it or anything. And then asked me for more money when he barely even did his job. This guy is the worst attorney on the planet. If you guys cherish your children and wanna see them. I suggest finding somebody better, In God for Vig, you like to know what what he did you know go through the money that you've paid him end? He hands me this sketched out. Hand-drawn little piece of note that had point 4 plate 4.46.4 and there was no letters on this to explain any of those numbers whatsoever. It was just. Couple point fours 6.77.8, when the dude didn't even do my case, he. He literally was going on somebody else's case fighting the judge while I was sitting up there on the stand so I'm not sure what to tell you, but I would deeply suggest if you see this man walking into a courtroom. And he's your lawyer. Fire him on the spot and find a new one. It's worth the extra money

Karen Costello is the attorney who I would trust. And this is true not because she provided me with the service which I was expected to receive from her according to our original scenario. She did better work for me by making me think She is an ethical person who prevented me from taking a wrong step and helped me to avoid unnecessary financial and moral expenses.

James is a very nice man. We provided all the paperwork, organized and highligted. He told us of the possible out comes and we were hit with shock at court when a $200 to no alimony turned to a $1100 alimony payment. He went to court unprepared and did not perform. Very disappointing.

Hired Clinton for a misdemeanor case. He told me $10,000 for lawyer fees and trial. We show up to trial and he was unprepared. Didn't properly submit some items into evidence, so they got tossed out. He tried to show a video and didn't even have it prepared, so that got tossed out too, and couldn't even show the video. The D.A made him look like a fool the entire time. I lost the case as a result. Then I get a bill on top of that for another $3,000 for "work he did". He wasn't even prepared for the trial!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
