Lisa Kubala is NOT the public defender you want on your side! She does NOT have the absolute best interest of her clients in mind and definitely is looking for her cut instead of actually helping her clients. Instead of being open to helping out her clients, she simply suggests "paying a fine" solely to sweep everything under the rug and NOT actually help out any of her clients. And she is quite rude and NOT pleasant to work with and thinks it is okay to cuss at her clients. I HIGHLY do NOT suggest using her as your public defender unless you are okay with shelling out money for below bare minimum help. She is known to DROP clients after she gets her cut or its simple "not her problem" and has flat out told her clients "find somebody else". Completely unprofessional and should find another line of work, given her attitude. There is a reason why she is rated quite low. She genuinely does NOT want to work with you and she simply does not care about you.

Ms. Kubala was wonderful from the start of our case to the final decision. She was always forthcoming with whatever information she obtained about my fiancé’s case. She went above and beyond for us. Lisa listens to her clients and makes things happen. We are truly glad we had her on our side.

After being unprofessional and cursing at my husband I tried to talk to her. Lisa Kubala stated it was not my concern.Several situations arouse a conflict of interest, sexual misconduct, and she refused to bring anything to the courts attention. I tried to resolve the situation believing me being a woman would help. Well nope, she is very unprofessional, and lazy. Lisa Kubala did absolutely nothing. Lied about her intentions to help, and dropped my husband as a client when I told her I was filing a grievance. She waited until she was paid in full of course. Please do not waste your money or time. You'd do better representing yourself!!

My complaint is on Dori Mistic, we were referred to her by her family members. Giving them benefit of the doubt we had high hopes she’d be good. We went to Dori back in April 2017, discussed we needed my daughters father to sign over his rights and my husband adopt my daughter. She said okay we can do, she said she would start as soon as she was paid. So we paid her In FULL the next day! She was like I’ll get it done ASAP. It took months and months of asking and reminding her what she was supposed to do for us to even sort of start it. I had to chase her and contact her multiple times via different forms of contact. She would sometimes take over a month to even respond. She didn’t even contact me to update me on the case nor even tell me she moved offices, her own daughter had to tell me. She kept telling us each month it would be all done quickly, and here we are February 2018 waiting for our court date they promised to set back January 4th when they last spoke of the case. I’ve written many emails and called many times and left voice mails. All I got in response was an email saying “you call us, have a good weekend “ just a very unprofessional, uncaring lawyer. If someone pays you in full you should be in it and updating them and getting their case done. Not having them chase you around for a year for any contact ! Please stay away and do not use. It’s a waste of time and money for something that could have been done quickly by any other lawyer. I have many of the same complaints for people I know personally who have used her too, sadly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
