I wish I had the vocabulary power to describe how amazed I am with Barney and his office. They are Johnny on the spot! I would leave 100 stars if I could. Not only is this man the best around, but his prices are fair! You will not be hiring a lawyer, you're getting a superhero.

I was arrested on a DUI charge and didn't think I had any chance of getting out of it. My job was on the line, so I hired Mr. Witherington based on numerous people referring him as the "go- to" guy for these situations. He jumped right into my case and developed some complicated legal technicality based on how they stopped my vehicle. He and his staff did a very thorough job of getting records, photographs, and all sorts of information to build my defense. IT WORKED. I got out with nothing on my record. Mr. Witherington was very personable and always responded to my calls the same day. I highly recommend him, and I hope I never have to use him again.

Barney is the best attorney around. He has the respect of all the Judges and District Attorneys. Unlike some other local attorneys, Barney Witherington knows the law and knows how to research. He is the best around. No question I recommend him!!!

I highly recommend Amber Griffin Shaw. She is a young, enthusiastic, extremely intelligent, caring and personable attorney. These are just a few of the adjectives I would use to describe Amber. My family and I felt she sincerely cared about us. We saw her determination to win our case as she fought our battle of personal injury to our son caused by toxic mold that inundated classrooms and hallways throughout his high school. Amber is not only an excellent attorney-at-law, but as she focused on our son and his injuries, was scientifically and medically prepared regarding indoor toxic mold and it's affects on the human body. We will forever be grateful to Amber. Thank you Amber!

Amber is in the process of helping me find a tenant that skipped out on his rent and caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to my property. She has proved to be extremely knowledgeable with the law and how the collection process works. She knows what to find and where to look. It seems as though she really cares about my misfortune, and she really wants to see the situation remedied.

I needed help with a guardian/custody case. After asking around, we were directed to Mr. Deslauriers. Mr. Deslauriers handled my matter quickly and skillfully. While it was occasionally hard to reach Mr. Deslauriers (who wants a lawyer that's scared to go to court?), he always returned my call or sent me a letter in response. I was satisfied with the outcome and with the rate that he charged.

I was not happy at all with the service I received from Frank Deslauriers. He hired him because of his reputation for helping women. My ex had a very good attorney and wanted one as well. The day we met he seemed very gung ho for my case and said he would be diligent. Well after I forked over my money the communication stopped for months. I find him very unemotional and he appeared bored at what I had to say. Don't get me wrong I am sure attorneys hear the same things over and over again, but I was not pleased. It was virtually impossible to get a return call and when I did speak to him he was always quick to tell me what a moral person he is and how diligent he is. I worry about people who have to tell you all the time how great they are. The case dragged forever and I did ok in the end, but what bugged me the most was he told several lies in court. I hate to say that but much of what was said on our side was not true. I believe a person should tell the truth in court and our side did not on some things. I was tempted to stand up and tell the judge some of the stuff he said in court was untrue. What happened was it made a tough situation with my ex even worse because I knew we were lying. Never again.

I don't know if I ever met an attorney like Mr.Deslariers. He has one thing going for him, he does remember the particulars of a case very well. However, the problem is there is never any logic in his arguments. As I sat watching him argue my case, even I had trouble figuring out where he was going with certain things. Needless to say, we did poorly. A few years later, a friend of mine ended up in a case where he was the opposing attorney against her. The lies and dirty pool played by Mr.Deslauriers were shocking. I never have been more turned off then by what I witnessed that day concerning law.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
