Ms. Laumann is one of the kindest people you will ever meet. She genuinely cares about her clients and will try her hardest to get a fair outcome. She advised me on a complex estate matter. Rather than lying to me and billing me for work she wasn't qualified to do, she had the integrity to recommend someone more qualified. In short, hire Cedulie if she says she can help you. She's reasonable and honest (which I can't say about most of the legal profession).

I know I rated Miss Lawless very high , even excellent , and thats what she is. She took my case and from the start she worked hard to help me, I was always informed of each step and she really did her homework and studied case files and every thing ealse a great lawer would do to help there client. I was amazed to watch her in the court room , up agenst older and more experanced lawyers , she holds her ground and she won this case for me and my sister and then won 2 apeals after that.. she is a young lawyer but don't let that stop you from going to her. She knows what shes doing and dose the best. She is honest, and down to earth , easy to talk to and will take the time needed to help you, she really cares for her clients. Thank You Lydia . I hope this is of help to anyone looking for the right lawyer.

Nick Cowie and his firm provided my company with legal services related to all aspects of my operations - literally from the initial registration and the development of a partner Buy/Sell agreement through the successful negotiations of the acquisition of my group. Over the course of almost fifteen years, he provided excellent guidance across all legal areas - contractual issues, HR policies and practices, some trademark and licensing challenges and all general day-to-day operational issues. Because of his forward thinking input and his reasonable and professional approach in dealing with me and my clients (and their attorneys), I never had one single legal issue that couldn't be addressed to the satisfaction of all parties involved. His intellect, caring personality and integrity really resonated with me and ultimately made a huge difference in my life. I can't recommend the Cowie Law Group highly enough!

I work for a Community Management firm in MD and have worked with Cowie Law Group for over 15 years. Nick and Stan are the best at what they do. They are #1 on my list of firms to contact whenever an Association is in dire need of strong legal representation.

I am currently a condominium board member who has served on the board of directors of our community at various times over the past 20+ years. During that time, Cowie Law Group has provided excellent legal advice and representation to our community. The law firm has experienced lawyers to assist with many matters, including resolving construction disputes, and dealing with daily condominium legal matters involving insurance, by-law interpretation and amendments, monthly board meetings, HOA rules and regulations and much more. I highly recommend Cowie Law Group for any condominium. In many cases, the attorneys at Cowie Law Group have provided legal advice which enabled the board of directors to resolve their legal issues without direct attorney participation. The Lawyers at Cowie Law Group have a deep understanding of Construction Law and can assist in resolving construction defects and issues involving renovations, repair work and maintenance issues. This also includes reviewing and negotiating contractor agreements when the association needs to hire contractors. They have done an excellent job advising our community and reviewing and negotiating contracts to protect the rights of our condominium association and its members. Cowie Law Group, P.C. has experienced insurance lawyers that have assisted us with matters involving insurance in the area of claims and insurance coverage. In addition, Cowie Law Group advocates for your community and has lawyers that specialize in governing documents. They have assisted our community with understanding, updating, and reviewing the declarations, community rules, and the By-laws. They provided recommendations on which condominium association rules needed to be updated. More importantly, they provided legal advice when community members challenged the rules and helped us resolve the issues without additional conflict.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.

Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
