I knew from the moment I met Jodie that she was a good person and the right lawyer for me. She assisted me in working through an uncontested divorce and she was awesome every step of the way. She was genuine and very easy to work with and was also very nice to my ex in helping her also understand how the process would play out on the day of court. I hope to never need a lawyer again but if I do .. I know EXACTLY who I am going to. Thank you again Jodie for everything!!!

A relative and her spouse recently divorced and I helped with the process of finding a lawyer. We were lucky enough to find Jodie. At the very onset, she interrupted her own vacation to respond to a question which was important to us. She was amazing at facilitating the process to be as peaceful as possible, was patient, honest, knowledgeable, up front and professional with all involved. She stated realistic expectations from the very start and she gave incredibly good, accurate and fair advice from the start. She knows the RI and MA laws and process inside and out, told us what to expect at each point along the way; My relative (and I) could not recommend her highly enough.

Paul Panichas esq. represented me in 2002 for assault charges that stemmed from an incident that happened at a friends house party, I was 18. He was a friend of my foster parents and was aware at the time of my current criminal charges. So He built Confidence in me and told me he could handle a criminal trial, took the little money I had, and gambled with my life & my freedom. -The Incident- I was jumped by 2 guys at a party, I was Outnumbered. They were brothers who went to the same high school, older & and who’s group of friends had a “neighborhood problem” with the group of kids I hung with as a kid. They had it out for me from the start of we walking into the party where this incident occurred. Long story short words where exchanged and a fight started. Buddy of mine got hanged up on and I stepped in in which They beat me to the floor, kicking & stomping me as I covered up In panic. I just remember blocking my face in complete fear for my life & wellbeing. A minute seemed like 10. at one point uncovering my face One of their kids broken through my face block & I pulled a pocket knife from my jeans pocket, pierced one man’s leg getting myself to my feet. The other came towards me continuing to assault me, reaching for my pocket knife in which he was stabbed in the torso. I was young, scared, & full of adrenaline panic & FEAR! Throughout this chaos another innocent man, friends with the victims in my case received a laceration to the arm as well. I didn’t remember even cutting him. I left the scene scared for my life and naive to the reality of what just happened and I was on the run til I turned myself in a week later and was given bail til trial start. -Trial starts- 1) one witness on my behalf & she was never subpoenaed to court by this lawyer. 2) He Never put me on the stand to counter the alleged victims (they were no victims) testimony. 3) he never objected to the victim lying while on the stand under oath. Both victims in the case committed perjury under oath. Due to This attorneys lack of knowledge and incompetence, 4) after being found guilty looking at 20 years I was sentenced 9 months after I lost trial. This lawyer never even came to see to prepare me for sentencing. I wrote the judge, Judge Nugent in the state of RI and told him about not seeing my lawyer for 10 months as well as put in a motion to be seen before the judge prior to my sentencing. It was on this day in 2003 when He told this lawyer, Paul Panichas that: “frankly he shouldn’t practice LAW IN THE STATE OF RI” The state gave me a new attorney and I had 2 options. Take my original plea bargain and plead NOLO or be sentenced to 20 years. So I signed NOLO 18 years ago and was a convicted violent felon for defending myself against 2 drunk jerks who liked picking fights and jumping guys in the neighborhood. In my eyes I did the right thing and was failed by this incompetent attorney. And my life as a felon has never been the same.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
