Attorney Sherri Smelley was a complete God-send to me and my son. We were fighting a long-term tedious battle and she took it head on. Mrs. Smelley has a creative lawyering strategy for each particular instance. She is punctual, respectful, and ALWAYS prepared. She keeps open communication with her clients, and her staff is wonderful as well! My son and I retained Mrs. Smelley for a divorce and child custody case, and she by far exceeded every personal and professional expectation. She is personable and will inquire your opinion and thoughts before making any legal decisions. I highly recommend Sherri Smelley to anyone looking for a superb attorney. I will, without hesitation, retain Sherri Smelley's legal counsel in the future for any other concerning matters!

I've known Sherri for many years on a personal level but recently sought her counsel on some estate issues. She has always been one who strives to seek excellence in everything she does and my mother and I have again seen this excellence again on her professional side as well. She was able to assist with appropriate correspondence and got the job done! She really does care about her clients and puts her heart into serving their needs. Thank you to you and your staff for being such a blessing in such a difficult time.

For more than 20 years, I’ve been a criminal defense trial lawyer. For over 15 years I’ve known Scott and I regularly refer personal injury cases to him. As a lawyer, referring clients to another lawyer is a big deal. In essence, you are placing your reputation on the line when you send a client to another lawyer. Scott always delivers great results for his clients. Scott is honestly the most organized and efficient attorney I’ve ever met. In addition, he is relentless in his dedication to obtain the best result for his clients. Frankly, he is magician with insurance adjusters. He seems to have some kind of instinct that tells him what the insurance companies need in order to pay large settlements. If you want someone that is going to get the most money for you, call Scott. If you want a lawyer that will keep you informed about the status of your case without you having to ask him, call Scott. If you want a lawyer that has integrity and that his word means something, call Scott. I’ll end with this…I honestly can not count how many people I’ve referred to Scott over the years. I’m certain it’s more than 20 people. In every matter, my clients called me after Scott completed their case to tell me “thank you” for referring them to Scott. You will not find anyone better to handle your personal injury case.

Scott was an incredible attorney who guided me through every step of my car accident and insurance claim. His expertise and dedication made the entire process smooth and stress-free. If you're dealing with an accident, don't try to handle it yourself—let Scott take the reins. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain with him on your side! Thank you, Scott!

I have known David Vaughn for 15 years and have consulted with him on a number of consumer related matters. While my clients issues generally concern mortgage and real estate matters, many have sought his assistance on Wills, Trusts and Estate issues, a wide range of consumer related issues as well as personal injury. David is also an expert on personal and business related bankruptcy. His 36 years of practice and trial experience, his easy going personal manner and command of the law, makes him an excellent choice as anyone's family lawyer! You won't see David on any high pressure television ad, on the top of an 18 wheeler or on the back page ad on the phone book, because he simply doesn't advertise in that manner. His best source of advertising is referrals from clients and colleagues as evidenced by his many years of successful practice. So, when it comes to any legal matter, trust not only an attorney's knowledge of the law, but practical experience because in the end experience matters!

Terrie Sadberry is an excellent attorney. She handled my divorce case in 2013, it was a difficult case to say the least. Most of the problems that arose were handled through phone calls & emails because I had relocated to another state. She is not only professional, but compassionate as well. She went above & beyond to get the divorce finalized, even going to my ex-husbands home to get the final papers signed.

The absolute incompetence if this firm is astounding!! Having deeds reworked has turned into a nightmare so much so that even after paying $500 the deed paperwork is still incorrect. Thank goodness I was paying attention and caught the issue before deeds were recorded. Out of all of this, Mrs. Fleming had the audacity to call me and blame me for their incompetence like I drafted the incorrect paperwork. No actual apology, just "um, um... like" who, in a supposed professional setting speaks like that?? Has anyone said they would return their fees or waive other fees or even actually apologized without an excuse that it was someone's fault other than theirs, absolutely not. 10/10 would not recommend!

Fantastic experience! From the time you open the door, you can tell that they respect you and your time. They promptly arrive for their appointments and don't make you wait needlessly in a big empty office, in addition to having multiple appointment times available that can work around most people's schedules. Services are clearly explained in laypersons' terms, and they don't overcharge you by over $1,000 for legal services you can accomplish yourself online for free plus the cost of a notary. They embrace innovation and are open to the fact that remote services exist everywhere in 2024. This means you won't have to make needless and inconvenient last-minute trips to their office for any reason. They deliver deadlines on time and keep their word. They don't drag things out for weeks that could be accomplished in days. They don't make any assumptions about who you are, what you're doing, or why you are doing it - but instead keep an open mind and are empathetic, kind, and compassionate. Cheers!

Hired Mr. Chunn to handle my divorce. Had a court date get changed to a different date and he did not notify me till we were at court. Also had a temporary custody hearing and he showed up to court with none of the evidence that I had presented to him a year ago. He was not prepared for court and it seemed like my case was not important to him. I will never step foot in that firm again.

Mrs. Simmons filed the Complaint, served Defendant along with Interrogatories. Defendant refused to Answer. Ms. Simmons failed to file a Motion to Compel on Defendant when time expired to Answer Interrogatories for Discovery. Defendant requested me to Answer Interrogatories but of course the questions are very personal and private. I refused, as the Defendant refused, keeping in mind they were requesting personal and private information of me after refusing to Answer very basic questions about my work related injury. Not at all of the same caliber.. From July-November 2021, Ms. Simmons had the fiduciary duty of filing a Motion to Compel but she refused. When I didn't agree with her way of practicing law she withdrew. Thankfully the Judge allowed her to remove herself as I wanted to fire her but would've had to pay for all costs. Definitely don't recommend. I have replaced her with a competent Attorney who agrees with the mishandling of my case by Ms. Simmons. When I requested my file from Ms. Simmons I received someone else's medical records. I'm assuming another client of Ms. Simmon's. She also filed her Motion to Withdraw from my case but submitted another client's information against Circle K who I'm not affiliated. Complete clustering.

Title: Disappointed with the high cost for a simple Will Review: Kayla Graben with Davis & Davis in Daphne I recently engaged this lawyer's services to update a simple will. My two previous wills, which were comparable and with the same legal firm, cost me around $400. This time, I was charged $1,250 for what essentially amounted to the same level of service. When I wrote to her about adjusting the cost she wrote back negatively and condescendingly.

Great experience. Richard helped with negotiations and finalizing commercial documents. Answered complex questions, simplifying them for my use. Additionally, he advised on normal practices as opposed to my thoughts regarding a few different scenarios which helped rationalize the direction I needed to take. I've used 2 civil attorneys previously, and I was charged more while they provided less detail and care towards my goals. I will use this firm from now on!

I was contracted to do a building at Mrs. Nixon’s home for her husband and to say that my experience with Faith Nixon was horrible is a understatement. I am a General Contractor in 3 states and a owner of a highly respected metal building company that sells into 12 states. I have dealt with general public for years but never anyone like Mrs. Nixon. Mrs. Nixon is the first customer that I have every had to be this rude and this degrading to me and my employees. Every step of the construction of this project was combative and insulting . Her ability to understand the construction process and what was required by code was a challenge. The fact that she is a construction attorney shocks me. She simply did not know what she was talking about. When I would try to explain things to her she would say that she was a construction attorney and she knew what she was doing. She was belittling to me and very disrespectful to my employees. I literally had employees tell me that they would not go back out there if she continued with her attitude and rude comments. After several attempts to with the work the situation it got worse and so did Mrs. Nixon attitude, to the point I lost my composure and probably said some things that I shouldn’t have. I ask if her husband, who I started the project with to help with the situation , but it was made clear to me by Mrs. Nixon that she was over this project and that I was to deal with her because she made the decision in that household. I’ve never been in a more abusive situation. I honestly felt sorry for Mr. Nixon because of the way she was acting was embarrassing and it wasn’t helping in getting his building built. We finally got finished with the project and a leak was discovered. This is not uncommon but still needed to be addressed. I explained that we stand behind our work and that we would fix it immediately. Needless to say, her comments were rude and uncalled for AGAIN. We immediately changed out the screws and the leak was fixed. Moving forward I now enjoy having a bad review by her on social media and with the better business bureau which cost me business every day. I’ve since looked at her google reviews page and just see review after review of her bashing honest hard working people / businesses and leaving them bad reviews. Her ability to empathize with someone who has made a mistake or to understand that people have bad days or just simply people make mistakes is beyond her ability to comprehend. So she bashes them on social media and leaves them a bad review. What a miserable person you have to be to go out of your way to leave that many bad reviews. WHO DOES THAT? Faith Nixon! As a person, I find her rude and impossible to work with because she thinks that she is the smartest person in the room and will tell you so and struggles with being corrected. I cannot imagine hiring her professionally as an attorney to representative a firm or a company or try a case. Totally unprofessional!

Once she gets your retainer she becomes your worst enemy . She will even tell you not to come to court for hearings and as she told me she can handle without me attending. Please don't fall for that! Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
