After my husband was injured in an auto accident, we had no idea what to do or where to begin. An advertisement of Bradshaw Coones, PLLC services came through the mail so we called to get more information. Mary's response to our questions that day and throughout the process was clear, thorough and focused on our situation. She stayed on my case working it for me until she finally settled the case in my favor! She took my case blindly and was 100 percent successful in the end! She is the way to go if you have any doubts about an accident you or someone you know may have Ben in. 10/10 recommend!!

I'm still in the middle of the case. We have been passed to another lawyer in his office who has not made us feel confident, or that we spent our money wisely. We see very little effort and receive negative speculations for possible outcomes. We were looking for a fighter, a sort of hero who will blaze a just path for our loved one who is suffering unjust and inappropriate consequences of a broken system. Our case is not difficult, but it's painful for the innocent people affected by it. Maybe it will work out in the end but so far we have zero piece of mind and can't get an appointment to attain that piece of mind.

The previous review is almost word for word on my fiance's case. Wouldn't do anything we asked of her. Absolutely didn't do anything for his case. Would never accept my phone calls and was told to only text her. Before she stated that she actually blocked my number and knows the phone # of Grayson county detention center and has blocked that as well not allowing communication from or to her client. He is innocent yet tried to get him to take a plea, the fact that she's ignoring communication is one valid reason to file a complaint with the Bar. I'm doing that next. Shes old , useless, and needs to step out of the court room.

Absolutely didn't do anything for my case. Would never accept my phone calls and was told to only text her. I was innocent and had a signed affidavit clearing my name and she told me the prosecutor's office didn't care. I asked repeatedly letters for her to come see me so we can talk about my case and prove my innocence and she never once come to see me in the jail. I had a first degree felony looming over my head along with the second degree. On my court date ( and she constantly did this) would walk out of the room to go talk to the prosecutor not allow me to hear what was being said or what was being discussed or negotiated about my case. I finally had to tell her in two separate letters that the next time at court I want to be present when my case is being spoken about when it involves my freedom. After weeks of constantly writing letters back and forth through the mail, getting paperwork notarized for court doing all this by myself. When the schedule date to sign I had no choice, I thought but to take whatever they were going to give me. She comes back after talking with the prosecutors in a different room and tells me, looks like that affidavit they're not going to file charges on you. This woman treats everyone who she represents as if they are guilty and will not do any amount of leg work regardless of how small the task. During plea agreements she doesn't even try to negotiate on your behalf. All she does in that courtroom is pass messages for you to the prosecutor. People who do not afford an attorney have no choice when a court appointed attorney is selected for them. I consider the way she practices is somewhat unethical due to the fact some people like me who were innocent, aren't getting proper representation. That can be the difference between innocent/guilty and degree of charge which can vary in years.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
