Paul Urey worked extremely hard on our case and won our case. He would be the first lawyer we would call if we needed another one.

The Premier Point HOA Board in Solomons Maryland was exceptionally well represented by Paul Urey during a years long issue with a community property owner. The issue at hand was an owner (one of six) that decided to sue the HOA and the Board members as well as the community builder, because they "didn't have enough water at their dock slip...." They sued for over 10 Million with their actual property value of less than $450,000! Paul was provided by State Farm our insurer and helped us through each step of the process - from an unsuccessful attempt at negotiation through arbitration (the failure the stubbornness of the party suing...) and getting to what would have been a trial that we were more than ready for. He ably and professionally assessed the factors that arose as a part of the suit that would have made for an exceptional movie on how not to sue an HOA - nor who to have in a courtroom as a part of your representation. He worked through professional (ethical) errors on the part of the other attorney, to the final resolution that ensured the HOA and the Board were not financially saddled nor encumbered by future issues that might have affect our property values. Paul helped and was involved with our case through every step and we felt that he was a genuine and critical key element in the effort. Paul worked with the other legal representatives for the other defendants and ensured they were fully informed of our Board actions (and we had thorough documentation for every issue) and how it affected their defendants representation. Towards the end, he also represented related factors to the Judge for the case and then to the new legal representation for the HOA member suing.... That communication helped to get us to an equitable ending. Though this summary is short - it should clearly state that we had full confidence in Paul's representation and the outcome of the case and would change nothing.

Rose did a fantastic job drawing up the wills, advanced directives, and durable powers of attorney for my wife, adult daughter, and myself, and additionally defined the trust for our son who is still a minor. Two things impressed us most: 1) she went through each of the many documents with us individually until she was sure we understood them all completely; and 2) she was very patient with us when we wanted to change some things after we had a better understanding of the documents. She didn't rush us, and that meant everything to us in making sure we got the documents right. Rose is fantastic.

Thanks to Donna Woodward, I got a primary custody of my two special needs kids in my complex custody case. This is what makes Donna so exceptional: 1. she is a deep listener, she did not miss any detail from what I have provided and used it all to win the case; 2. Donna is strategic, she thinks step ahead and modifies strategy based on new information; 3. she sees in her client not only a client, but a human being for whom she can use her intelligence and talent. I hope more women, mothers and families will continue benefiting from Donna!

Hiring/Paying this firm was a life changing experience that really affected me. I was informed that Lauren Miller was one of the best, which she actually left the firm halfway thru my case. Then Melissa was supposed to take my case, but she then handed me to another lawyer her firm hired. This whole process of representation was terrible due to the following: - Lauren Miller showing up late in court - Not prepping the client at all - Cancelling appointments last minute - creating a false story about the location of a lawyer, just to randomly show up and the lawyer was in the office (apparently he was supposed to be in court which is why they cancelled my appointment) - lawyer talking to me about how he enjoyed spending time playing basketball with his son, and I literally fighting to be present in my sons lives - stories and actions that did not make sense - the feeling that they actually were working with the “other side” - no organization - take your money….and run feeling - not understanding and no empathy - not given the best advice

Julie's office is sloppy and disorganized. When I asked for a document (a current document relevant to my case) she postponed and postponed emailing it to me. Finally, I went to her office to get it. Her office was full of cardboard boxes with no organization. It took her (no secretary) 30 min. to find the file. Guess who was paying while this took place? Julie does not do her homework. She waits until the very last minute, which infuriates the other party so they are not cooperative. She is unethical. She openly lied on more than one occasion to cover for her ineptitude. I do not trust her, that is why I am writing this anonymously. I suspect (I have no evidence) that Julie has trouble with alcohol. She is disheveled and she has huge dark circles under her eyes. Moreover, she does not present well in court, she is sloppy and truly unprofessional.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
