I had the privilege of being represented by Attorney Stephanie Shipley in a recent DUI case. From the start, Stephanie demonstrated exceptional dedication and legal acumen. She thoroughly investigated every detail of my case and discovered critical discrepancies in the evidence, which ultimately led to the State dropping all alcohol-related charges against me. Stephanie's meticulous attention to detail and her ability to navigate the complexities of the legal system were instrumental in achieving this outcome. She kept me informed at every step, provided clear explanations of my options, and was always available to answer my questions. Her professionalism and commitment to her clients are truly commendable. I highly recommend Stephanie Shipley to anyone in need of a skilled and diligent attorney. She turned what could have been a very difficult situation into a successful resolution, and I am incredibly grateful for her efforts.

Phillip and his team helped me through a long and treacherous divorce. His advice was solid. He did an excellent job preparing me for deposition and court and was an excellent lawyer! He listened to me the entire time & even read my scribbles quickly in court when my spouse was lying and was able to quickly point to evidence that my spouse was not being honest!

Tenacious, I think that’s the best way to describe Phil Cronan. I am not educated in law, I ask more questions than I should and I’m very reactionary. That said I can’t thank Phil and his team enough for putting out the fire that became my life. I would recommend them to anyone who needs help in family law. Phil took the time to make sure I was informed and explained every step so we could reach the best possible outcome. Thanks again

Mr. Cronan and his team have been my representation through a lengthy divorce and custody battle and have been nothing but superior. Philip is outstanding in the courtroom yet has been compassionate to me as a mother during these difficult times. The whole staff's attention to detail and concern for my family's well being during challenging litigation have been like no other. I am grateful for their knowledge and expertise and continually refer family and friends to the firm.

Ms. Whiting is a child advocate and puts her heart and soul into her clients. She represented my children during a nasty divorce case several years ago. The thing that I respected the most is her complete and utter honesty, even when it wasn't what I always wanted to hear. She listens to both sides (parents) , however, she puts the childrens needs first.

I have had Mr. Hollis as my attorney in the past for my daughter and myself. Recently, I had need of his services again, just for me. My case had been dragging on for over a year and a half. Going back to Mr. Hollis, even though I had moved off the Shore, was the best choice I made. He managed to do in a few hours what several lawyers on the Western Shore were not able to do in over a year and a half. He listens to his clients and does everything he can to bring about a fast resolution. His knowledge of the Maryland courts is thorough, his care of his clients is always first on his mind. You could not ask for a better attorney.

I can’t say enough good things about Andrea Ross. She made my bankruptcy experience easy and smooth. Mrs. Shipley is the truly best. She did everything in her power to have the best possible outcome in my case and did EXACTLY that. I was nervous as i’ve never been through anything like this before. After talking with Mrs. Shipley, she put my mind at ease through her effort and persistence in my case. She is extremely knowledgeable and highly skilled in her line of work. The firm was highly recommended to represent me in my divorce. My case must have been too small. In the 30 days they represented me the first outgoing letter to the opposing counsel was sent to my son’s email address. He called me and asked if I had gotten it and of course I had not. A second communication to the opposing counsel on March 23, 2023 was copied to a misspelled email address so I did not receive it. I was informed of this email on April 6, 2023 when my attorney returned my March 31, 2023 phone call and April 3, 2023 email. I could not believe that it took two weeks to find out about this misdirected email and terminated their services at the end of the phone call. Three hours later the attorney forwarded a copy of her March 23, 2023 email to my correct email to show me that she had sent me a copy on March 23. The March 23 email showed my misspelled email. I emailed my attorney back pointing out the errant email and heard nothing back until March 12 in an email to my correct email address sending the termination letter and final billing and a copy of the check for the remaining balance left of my retainer. Only one problem with the termination letter and check. ..the mailing address had the incorrect street name. Extremely unprofessional and in the end made no progress toward finalizing my divorce at a cost of over $3,700.

Showalter was recommended to me and I hired him in August 2022 to expedite the approvals to begin construction on my home on the Eastern shore. After the initial consultation where he sounded very confident that he could help me, it was next to impossible to get in touch with him. It was to the point that I was calling the office on a daily basis to try to speak with him. On the rare occasions that he did get back to me, he'd say he was working on everything and would be going to the next county meeting to get approvals. After each meeting, I'd check in to see the progress and each time he'd say he missed the meeting and would go to the next one. Finally, I called the county who said nothing had ever been submitted by him and no meetings were set up. I even offered him to drop the case if he was too busy to which he said he could handle it. After four months of being strung along with absolutely no progress, I found a new lawyer who has done more in the two weeks I've been with him.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
