I was in need of advice and he did not hesitate. He had a lot of knowledge and was concerned about my specific facts. He was immediately available and took time to research for me. I knew that I could trust him and that he cared.

James was kind enough to assist me with questions I had and always steered me in the proper direction. I never had to second guess his knowledge. He knows everything in his field off the top of his head with great accuracy. He knows many of the players in his field as well. He is always there where I need him! Quick, professional and made me feel good I had him in my corner.

My first impressions of Jim Shepherd was his responsiveness--he made extra efforts to reach me even while he was away on a trip. Now, I don't expect that he would always be available that way, but it sure impressed me that an attorney was calling me back, responding to the urgency of my situation, even while he was away on a holiday. As it turns out, my further interactions with Jim substantiated that initial impression--he has been consistently responsive. In our initial consultations he was very generous with his time, and very specific and thorough in both his questions as well as his responses. He gave a us a very clear and thorough view of what we could expect in pursuing a bankruptcy, and he was quick to note where it might be useful or less than so in our various scenarios. Based on our experience, I can say that Jim takes a dedicated interest in properly evaluating the need, applicability, and viability of a bankruptcy option, with specific attention to the client's unique situation, and ultimate benefit. I would highly recommend anyone who may be considering bankruptcy to contact Jim and avail themselves of his services!

I'm impressed. Andrew Shalaby took an impossible situation and made it work so effortlessly after I tried with four other attorneys! He likes to help people that deserve to be helped, and will often do it for free. He once told me, "if I could represent all the deserving people without ever charging a cent, I would do that." His focus is on helping people that are deserving and like to help other people. He likes to "pay in forward." I wish we had more people like that!

I made a lot of phone calls before finding Kathleen. A number of the people I talked to were slick attorneys that wanted nothing more than to upsell their services. I was lucky enough to find Kathleen on a review website. I planned to retain Kathleen for a post-nuptial agreement, prior to buying a house. After the first phone call, she told me how I could do it cheaper. We then made an appointment to meet. She drove across the bay on a weeknight, to meet me at my home after work. It turns out, there was a low cost legal workaround for my situation. Have you ever heard of a lawyer that looks out for clients like that? Not only did she save me a ton of money on my post-nup, she also answered some questions I had about a trust I have. Kathleen is an incredibly knowledgeable, honest and down-to-earth estate planning attorney. Once I buy my house, I plan to hire her to complete my estate plan.

I'm a former legal secretary, so I know a good attorney when I see one, and I was very happy with the guidance I received from attorney Chris Baudino. My case was fairly complicated with numerous players and he remembered each one by name and the roles they played. He pays great attention to detail and he understood what happened to me and what I needed. He always returned my calls, he replied to my emails expeditiously, and he answered a ton of questions. When we had phone consults he was always on time and ready to go. He was very honest about the ins and outs of the court system and the work it would take to pursue a court case, including depositions, and he didn't sugar coat it. He's an excellent attorney and I'm grateful to have found him.

Can someone help lift my jaw back up please? I'm truly amazed by Mr. Baudino. Nobody wants to be in a spot where we are in need of an attorney, but when issues arise and we find ourselves in a bind, we need someone who knows the law, what our rights are and how to get what we deserve. I used Chris for a real estate issue and wish I could have used Chris for a family law issue I had too. When you've worked with a number of attorneys like I have, you begin to know the difference between a great attorney, an okay one and a bad attorney. But that's how I know he's an amazing attorney. I am beyond grateful to have stumbled upon Chris for a partition case he is working on for me. He's empathetic to the situation at hand and understands that to us that have not studied the law, we do not understand the lingo. He carefully explains everything including the time frame of everything which is also nice. Fortunately, Chris is up to date even on the laws and because of his experience, he understands the subtle nuances of how things are handled. Since having Chris take on my case, my level of stress regarding the real estate issue is gone. I know he has my best interest at heart and works diligently towards my goal in a timely manner. He responds quickly, does exactly what he says he will do, and I don't ever have to check on anything. He sets reminders for himself to check on and make sure everyone he is working with to get my issue resolved does their part and the ball does not get dropped. I'm sure it is a lot to handle, but he manages it all and is always on top of everything. I used to worry when I first hired him on because I've had other attorneys where I've had to follow up and remind them of things, but when I would follow up with Chris, he would already have done what I asked, or explain the reasons to wait. Chris is reliable and accountable. He does what he says he will do! I trust and know he's got everything taken care of. That is definitely a price worth paying since it has given me peace of mind. Chris is worth every penny and more! Thank you Chris! You are the BEST!!!!!

Initial experience calling into the office and speaking with Quintero was very good/responsive. But there was NO follow-up despite my reaching out a couple times via email and text after my initial call to the office. I will try again today in hopes that perhaps the phone and email for direct contact that I received was some how outdated.🤞as this firm has great recommendations.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
