I was having issues with my credit report in regards to a derogatory record that did not belong to me and had been on my credit record for a year. Mr. Lapin reached out to me in a timely fashion and laid out the information he needed in order to handle the situation as quickly as possible. A certified letter was drafted and written to all parties involved to remove the negative record and Mr. Lapin kept me in the loop for every step of the process. I am still waiting to hear from the responses of the other parties in regards to the letter but at the moment, i feel like a burden has been lifted off my shoulders.

I found Rachel via some amazing recommendations and reviews. She represented my mother and I on separate cases. She was absolutely amazing during my entire process; extremely dedicated, kind, understanding and really achieved great results! I was also the interpreter during most of my mother’s meetings with Rachel. Having English as ones second language is incredibly difficult and scary when dealing with legal matters. Legal terminology is difficult and intimidating for even native English speakers, let alone for someone who speaks English as a second language. Rachel was incredibly patient and did everything she could to communicate with my mum, and to get her the desired results. She is someone who will get back to you promptly and speak to you as a friend. She will spend hours preparing you for everything with a smile and assure you that everything will be just fine. I travel a lot for work, so sometimes mum had to meet without me, which caused me a lot of worry because I wasn’t sure how much mum would understand and mainly how afraid she would be. My mum would call me after and rave about Rachel. How smart, kind, and dedicated she was. How she was going above and beyond. You won’t ever feel like just a client in her hands. She will treat you and your case as if it were her own family. And I truly mean that. That is very rare to find, especially in the legal field. She’s incredibly smart and driven. It’s very admirable and impressive. I have since recommended Rachel to friends and my best friends mother also couldn’t be happier and more confident with Rachel on her side. I can not recommend Rachel enough. Simply an amazing young woman and attorney doing amazing things for Mainers. She will forever be our go to, and even though we never knew Rachel prior to hiring her as our attorney, she will always remain a family friend. She’s just that kind of person. You become family to her, and she will do everything she can to take good care of you. Her professionalism is beyond anything I can put into words. It’s rare that I write a review for someone, but Rachel deserves even more than anything I can put into words. I promise you, she’s simply the best.

Forget about wimpy lawyers who just want to settle the case. You need a lawyer who will fight for you! Ardith Keef specializes in only Family Law and what an advocate!! I couldn't have been in better hands. She worked tirelessly to get me what I deserved. She charges a reasonable rate, and never "padded the bill" by asking for the same things repeatedly. I felt listened to, cared about, and truly had a "tiger" on my side. I highly recommend her!

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
