I was injured in a car accident and a friend recommended John Scott to me. He was attentive, caring and really came through for me in this difficult time. He was able to get money for time out of work and a great settlement in the end for future medical care. If you are looking for a top notch attorney that truly cares, John Scott is it!

Greg, was a real help when it came to buying my first home. He went over my paperwork with me and help me with questions that I had that I felt my Realtor wasn't answering properly (probably should have gotten a better Realtor, but hey I'm new to the house purchasing bit). We reviewed my mortgage information, property title, etc; After the review with Gregory Thibodeau, I felt confidant in my purchase. I was glad to cover my butt legally in this volatile marketplace where I heard horror stories of people on short sales getting into trouble.

When I was wrongfully charged with a DUI for being in my parked car during winter, I was terrified of the consequences. James Chatto did everything he could to help me, and in the end, to my amazement, all charges were dropped. I didn't have to keep in constant contact with him over my two year legal battle, and yet he was always prepared and informed about my case. The flat fee/lack of hidden charges ensured I could pursue justice to the fullest without having to worry about expenses. He really seems to be someone who cares about his clients, I am so glad I hired him!

James was very professional during our consultation. I didn't know what to expect and he asked me for the type of outcome I wanted with my charge and delivered it above and beyond my expectation. During the whole ordeal, I didn't need to worry or follow up with him. I had every confidence he was working hard for me and in the end obtained a lesser charge for me. I highly recommend him for anyone who needs a criminal lawyer.

I completely agree with the review titled “Liar and Con”. Makes sense why he’s a public defender and not an actual lawyer. Said he would help me with my case and never got back to me. Also referred me as “dude” over the phone, talk about unprofessional! JEESHHHH

Grant talks a great game ! He tells you what you want to hear and then stabs you in the back ! I truly trusted Grant ! I told him everything he was at my house,my parents house and my brother's house. He met my dog ! In 2016 Grant was my attorney for a BB gun that was my son's that he gotten for Xmas the charge was felon in possession of a firearm and a meth pipe! I was scared of going to prison ! I kept saying that the police voliated my rights! About 6 months later Grant fills out this plea agreement for me and then gets me to come and sign the last page ! Because I truly trusted him and HE NEVER said anything about the illegal search of my car and I believe I am bi polar and don't understand what things I sign ! I sign! I JUST FOUND OUT November 2021 that YES the police voliated my rights and that the state went to dismiss the case and then Grant Sanders lied, tricked, cons me to make a plea !!!! My life is completely distroyed as this result !! I have even thought about killing myself! Grant Sanders should not ever represent anybody

"Grant was appointed to represent me over 7 years ago when my public defender was called away from work. I was concerned that my matter would not get the attention it needed. Boy, was I surprised. Grant took the time to listen to me, gather the facts of the case (my prior public defender never had), and was willing to "take on" the judge when there were some unfavorable rulings. With his legal research and strategy, he was able to move the custody case out of a county where the judge had a bias against me. The result: a child protection case was dismissed, and I was granted sole legal and physical custody of my children. "If you're a married or single father, contact Grant. He is an advocate for a father's rights. He will do everything in his power to assist you. I have Grant on 'speed dial' should any issues arise with the mother of my children. Grant's service was more than I expected from an appointed lawyer- and my children consider him their "guardian angel." What distinguishes Grant is that he listens to you and cares about the outcome of your case. I wholeheartedly recommend Grant for any family or child protection matter."

To get me to put down a retainer she told me my case was an easy case and the opposing council would be easy to get passed. During my hearing, she failed to represent the facts that I had presented to her. She did things as she wanted them to be done, and spent the majority of her time rewriting what I had already done to increase her fee. DO NOT HIRE HER.

We hired Jessica to represent us in requesting an increase in parenting time. She was condescending throughout, always in a rush and did not listen to our concerns. She also did not utilize over half of our supporting documentation to support these concerns. She was not prepared and did not argue our case in the Court room. We would've been better off representing ourselves.

If I could give her a -10 stars, I would! Jessica is extremely unprofessional - and I'M the one who hired her to work for ME! She was impatient, answered my questions as if they were stupid questions, and angry with my wanting to understand the process better. I fired her halfway through the process and couldn't have been happier. Go elsewhere - FAST!

Terrible. I don’t know what he was like as an attorney but anyone who gets assigned this guy as a judge I feel sorry for. He is very biased, will have his mind made up about you before you even get a chance to show yourself before he, he will very rudely interrupt you like a 9 year old child does, will not take into consideration anything that looks good on your defense and has admitted, well in my HRO proceeding he admitted he knows a lot of people who have gone to treatment and snuck cell phones in to the facility which makes me wonder how credible a man who hangs out with such people are to even be in the position he is in. I never hired or consulted. I picked consulted to post my two cents since he felt the need to be so inconsiderate of me to shut me down and be deceived by the respondent of my HRO on everything I had to say and for throwing everything I had to prove out. I sure wouldn’t shed a tear if he pulled a Robin Williams on himself.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
