Alex of Russin Law has been my go-to for legal work. He’s put together my family’s will, as well as numerous other things pertaining to my business. This has included probate, estate work, as well as real estate transactions. When you are dealing with important matters, you need to hire someone you can truly count on. For me, that’s Alex Russin and his team.

Skip getting a realtor and go with Don- your better interests are most important to him whereas realtors only think about ways to squeeze more money out of you. He definitely is worth every penny- he's taking care of everything and watching out for us. Inexperienced sellers/buyers can easily fall victim to underhanded realtor practices- Don will not let that ha pen. Highly recommended

Asked for monthly updates about a financial situation and Alex is just poor at communicating. Nice guy, but bad at his profession. Don’t go thorough the frustrations and agony that our family went through.

Positives: -Reasonable cost, especially compared to some -Achieved desired result, mostly -Aggressive -Excels at procedure and document preparation Negatives: -Aggression extends to clients as well -Acts annoyed at all client contact, even in preparation for trial -No empathy, doesn't seem to care whatsoever -Forgot about a court date -Seemed to be cross-examining "on the fly," looked unprepared at times -Her phone rang and she answered it during court -Ego, excessive pridefulness and takes offense an perceived/imagined slights to ego -"Chip on her shoulder" -Does not like to answer questions between hearings, or before hearings. Basically, don't talk to her and just pay her. -Weakness in interpersonal client communication skills -Low Tech office and skills, email is not an option If you don't have a lot of money, this is a decent route. Better than nothing, by far. She has a lot of experience and has seen a lot, so I walked away in better legal shape than when I arrived. (For this, she get a "fair" rating and not a 1 star-"poor" rating.) But along the way, she was ice cold, downright rude and nasty. I was a good, paying client, and she treated me like she was doing charity work and I should be grateful. I hired her many times, and she received a lot of money, but you wouldn't know it by her attitude. She talked down to me, and was openly annoyed with my questions. I would be happy to pay for those questions to be answered, if it bothers her so much, but she has a flat rate. Because of her flat rate, she barely feels obligated to even speak to me to prepare for the trial, let alone anything in-between that comes up. I expected her to be more sensitive, especially knowing the kind of abuse I had endured. In retrospect, I was still suffering from the effects of domestic violence, or else I shouldn't have repeatedly hired someone so cruel. It was a vulnerable time in my life, and I actually felt consistently degraded by my own lawyer, and it added to the pain of the experience, frankly. But on the positive, all that miserable, toxic attitude comes out in the courtroom in (mostly) all the right ways against the defendant. If you are on a tight budget and have a sneaky domestic abuser who secretly hates women, HIRE THIS ATTORNEY. She will trigger him and he will expose himself for what he really is. during court. That was my experience, I hope it works for others. So overall, this is a mixed bag. The price is nice, especially when you know you have a long legal battle ahead. If you are a survivor of profound lifelong abuse, have PTSD and want to be treated with some empathy and respect, this may not be the right lawyer for you. That was my experience, anyway. In life, I find that we mostly get what we pay for. I can understand this experience only in retrospect and by comparison. I have new representation now, and although it costs more, the quality of the communication is much more refined. By contrast, my questions are welcome and answered thoroughly at the new firm, but at this one I was treated as though a good paying client is a bother.

I felt he mislead me. He was very unprepared, and his presentation was very weak. It was like he knew nothing going into a trial.

Does not get paper work to clients before closing. Doesn't allow you "any" time to review closing statements. Would not allow any corrections on closing statements, that were wrong. Alot of mistakes in closing statement. Very dis-satisfied with closing. Closing took 17 minutes with no explanations. Papers were thrown at you to sign and if you took a second to read anything , Lewis Wetzel compplained about it. He's been around to long and thinks more of himself than his clients. Too rushed. It is not the way to do business. My advice is to watch your back and make sure every 'i' is dotted and 't' is crossed. Especially, when dealing with anyone including real estate agents in the Pocono area, they are all a bunch of barracudas.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
