We located Travis through our employer sponsored Legal Services Plan. We needed to have a Will and Deed completed. Travis and his team were very thorough, kind and listened to our concerns. We received our Will and Deed in a timely fashion and Travis reviewed it with us to make sure it was how we wanted it. He also gave us some additional ideas to add to our estate plan. I would definitely recommend Dafoe Law to anyone looking for an estate plan.

Travis and his elder care coordinator were VERY helpful with assisting my family with my mother's needs. Travis is very caring about the needs of the elderly and helping them with those needs. Courtney was so caring and friendly. She was always there for Mom and my family. I had such peace of mind knowing I could call her anytime. No matter what my worries were she was always reassuring that everything would work out and be fine. And it was! I cannot speak highly enough of Courtney. This law office was such a blessing for us!

I am grateful to have discovered Attorney Julie Gafkay to represent my Civil Rights Case. I learned of Attorney Gafkay while researching other Black healthcare professionals who had experienced what I call, “patient initiated - employer sponsored race bias.” The most prominent case that Julie has represented to date is the Battle vs. Hurley case in which she represented Tonya Battle, a Black nurse whose employer honored a man's request that African-American nurses not be allowed to care for his newborn. The case gained national attention. I googled Attorney Gafkay’s name and read the reviews on her website and contacted her. Soon after I contacted her office I received a phone call from Julie and immediately, I knew she was on my team. Julie had successfully represented several cases that were specific to Black health care workers experiencing patient initiated workplace discrimination. Despite the fact that Julie was reperesenting me across the country I could always trust that Julie had done the work of researching every professional we would encounter in my community including the Judge, local counsel and the arbitrator. I was always informed and knew what to expect next in my proceedings. There was not a moment in which she represented my case that I did not feel prepared. I felt comfortable asking questions. Things all came together when Julie arrived for my mediation proceedings wearing a red jacket. She had put together an effective team which included local counsel to represent me. I knew they had my best interest at heart and they calmed my nerves. Julie was polished and knowledgeable and had researched cases similar to mine and their outcomes. She validated my experience. The end result of my experience is that I felt empowered and vindicated. I absolutely recommend Julie Gafkay to represent your case against patient initiated -employer sponsored race bias. Taking a stand against racism is not easy and when you do so make sure that you have an experienced, knowledgeable and passionate attorney to represent you.

Julie took my case because she felt it was the right thing to do to give me voice. She believed I was treated unjustly, and she is a lawyer who is in the field because she is passionate about justice. Other lawyers told me I didn't have a case, couldn't win, or flat out ignored me. Julie called me right back, met with me, and took my case. Once I had her to represent me, I never worried. I knew without a doubt that I was in compassionate and competent care. She always responded to me immediately, and contacted me if anything was needed of me. We worked together for a year -- and won. I cannot recommend Julie enough. Having her represent me was one of the greatest honors of my life.

I contacted Julie regarding bonus and commissions, earned over a period of time, that was not being paid. Her knowledge and her ability, to explain the law and how it applied to my situation, was invaluable. She was able to help me determine a direction and collect what was owed to me. She and her practice were professional and involved every step of the way. At all times, throughout the process, I felt like everything was under control from the moment she took my case.

Flighty, unreliable, incapable, doesn’t follow through with her commitments: I’m writing the review I wish I had read before I hired her. With full knowledge of what the case entailed, she agreed to represent me up to and including a trial--signed a retainer agreement, took my money for a retainer fee. She ignored my emails and phone calls for long stretches of times. Then, without even filing the complaint, she sent me a letter telling me that she was no longer representing me, citing only her own ignorance in the legal matter. Think of it this way: Your car is broken. You call a mechanic. He says, “Yeah, I can fix that; that’s my specialty. I’m an expert in transmission repair.” You pay him. He takes your car for months. You can’t get ahold of him. When you finally do, he says, “Turns out I can’t fix it because, actually, I don’t know how to fix transmissions. But I’m going to keep your money.” Anyways, I begged her to sit down and talk to me, to explain what had changed, so that I could understand if I had a case or not, if I should find another lawyer and continue or not. She wouldn’t even give me that. She left me hanging and for all my foresight and planning ahead, I ended up back at point zero, but now broke, unemployed, and having missed some of the statutes of limitations on parts of my claim.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
