Mrs.Holbert is the best family law lawyer I could have ever hired to represent us. A pleasure to work with. My case was very complicated. Along with a NCO in place throughout my entire case, made it extremely difficult. But Mrs. Holbert did an amazing job handling the complications of the matter as well as being the 3rd party contact to the co-parent. I was completely amazed and impressed how well she handled all the stress of my case. If you are dealing with a narcissistic co-parent Mrs. Holbert is amazing in dealing with them. From our first meeting, she explained everything to me in terms I could easily understand and was always very responsive when I had questions outside of our meetings. If anyone is looking for a knowledgeable lawyer Mrs. Holbert is your best bet. She was not only "extremely" knowledgeable, but she was highly sensitive to the fact that it was proving to be a traumatic experience for all involved. She goes above and beyond. Works well with GAL's. I was extremely pleased with mine and my daughters outcome. Mrs. Holbert's legal representation restored my faith in the justice system for sure. So again. I'm confident that you too will not be disappointed. If you're seeking legal help as a child custody client do not hesitate ,Mrs Holbert is reasonable and worth every cent.

“I now live in PA but needed a lawyer in Washington State to help with my Paternity/Child Custody issues. I spoke to multiple lawyers in Washington and felt they really didn’t care and were only interested in getting the huge retainer they required up front. Feeling uncomfortable I started searching for lawyers again and came across Terry L. Smith. I went on his website and read the comments from people he has helped so I called him. This was the best move I ever made. Terry and everyone in his office were knowledgeable, professional, personable and just a pleasure to work with. They made me feel like they really cared about my case and they really did care even though I was 3000 miles away. They responded to every email within hours and also returned all calls promptly. It turned out I was not the father of the child in question but Terry also helped me re-coup all the child support I already paid out. I could not have done any of this without Terry and his staff’s excellent work. I would strongly recommend Terry and his office for your Paternity/Child Custody legal needs. Thanks again to Terry and everyone in the office!”

I appreciate a lawyer that is willing to actually listen to what was going on and not just tell me to plead guilty.

An anonymous source within the Island County court system said to me "if I was in trouble, there is only one attorney on the island I would hire; Andrew Scott. I give the same advice. If you have a problem that requires legal assistance or representation...take it very seriously and hire Mr. Scott. I was charged with a 4th degree felony and I met with Mr. Scott an hour after I called him to schedule an appointment. His demeanor was calm and steady and quiet. He listened without judgement. Then he explained how he was going to proceed with the case, all possible outcomes and he appeared in court on my behalf the following day. After 3 months of discovery, court dates, and delays, my case was dismissed - the best of all possible outcomes (and the most just.) And I only had to appear in court once. Mr. Scott did all the work. I think this guy is an angel.

We were being bullied and harassed by a neighbor and confronted with a court appearance. Mr. Scott got a consultation scheduled quickly - during the holidays. He provided direction on what to do in preparation and helped us prepare properly before representing us in court. He was professional, timely, knowledgeable, and candid about possible outcomes. We hired him with realistic expectations and were pleased with our positive result. We will call upon him again should a need arise.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
