Hired him to take care of a case the state had charged me with for shaking a pop machine while on vacation in Illinois. Not only was he able to get me a date for court that worked well for me, farther down the road than normally offered since I live 8 hours away, but he went in with all my concerns in mind and was able to get the charge completely dismissed. Very happy with his attitude and knowledge along with the outcome. He wasn't the type of lawyer to take my money and roll over for the first deal they through out. Money well spent. Would for sure hire him for any other proceedings in Illinois. I can't give him and his secretary a big enough thank you!

A great practice that works for you. Always there to answer questions and will go above and beyond for you. They do the best the can to give you the outcome that expect. Craig and Maria have been my lawyer for a little over 3 years and I wouldn't go anywhere else. They are very good with child custody cases and child support. They explain every thing in detail and give you believable expectations.

Craig and his wonderful assistant Maria have been nothing short of amazing. They have been kind and considerate, and deliver the legal results I wanted. I used Craig for family law and found him to be very fair in cost.

Ronald J. Leinen helped our family with estate planning. He was extremely helpful and accomodating, coming to our aid on short notice to help with a will as my father's health declined. He was prompt, professional and compassionate.

Me and my newly wed husband sought services for a small claims matter. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and unlike most lawyers not a lier or a cheat. His price was extremely fair for the case also. Att. Leinen's hired job was to regain materials that totaled over three thousand dollars. He fully handled every aspect of the case from having the defended served with papers, to handling communications between the two parties, and also alternative routes that can be pursued to fulfill the clients', our, needs. He successfully gave a proper approach to our situation and even explained his own shock that it is rare for a client to receive a good of outcome as we received.

I have worked with Jason for the last three years, he has always been professional, impressively knowledgeable, and goes out of his way to help his colleagues and clients. As an insurance agent, I don't hesitate to refer my clients to Jason for real estate work and know they will be well taken care of. The last client I sent to Jason thanked me profusely and said that she was blessed to have wonderful people looking out for her best interest and being flexible enough to take her calls even late in the evening after work. Thank you Jason!

Mr. Van Hemert did not advise me on the legal consequences bankruptcy would have for my future. I went to him with a certain goal in mind, and instead of advising me on what the best option was to achieve that goal, he did whatever I could afford without informing me that it wouldn't achieve my ultimate goal. What made things worse was that Mr. Van Hemert was hard (impossible) to contact.

Same as others. Awful! Wasted time, money, and cost us the case! During child custody case she was arguing the wrong matter of law! She did not even ask my husband about his relationship with his child when the child's mother was trying to prove that the child wanted nothing to do with dad!! We knew we lost before the judge returned from chambers. Hiring her was the worst decision we could have made!

Hired her to handle my divorce. She was awful!!! She wouldn't respond to my requests for information. I had to beg and threaten her to reply to my emails and phone calls. The divorce was finalized over a year ago and she still has not filed the order to get the settlement payment.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
