Mr. Bernadich came highly recommended as a trustworthy and intelligent attorney specializing in bankruptcy and minor criminal matters. Needless to say, he not only lived up to his reputation, but far exceeded even my expectations in his handling of my matter(s). I have already recommended his services to my fellow co-workers, and the results have been overwhelmingly positive.

Mike took on my case in May 2005 without hesitation after i reached out to him. it was a complex litigation however, he was not afraid of the challenge, he was a hard fighter and truly cared about the interests of myself and that of my son, Mike invested 100s of hours of time in preparation and trial practice for this matter. This man is one of the very few attorneys in practice who is genuine and does things out of kindness and sound judgment, instead of greed and lack of care. I would recommend Mr. Edwards to anyone who wants a true gentleman and professional that cares about you and getting the result that you ask for.

I needed information about getting divorced but also about being deployed and what would happen, Zach gave me great information and good guidance but also about possibilities that were there, he listened and understood but he also cared about my case, in the end if I do need a lawyer while I am deployed or when I return I will be hiring Zachary Backlund as my attorney.

Mr. Backlund made me feel like he cared about my case. The reason I originally chose Zachary as my lawyer was his firms quick response to my questions. When I called I got straight through to Zachary, and my emails were almost always answered within 2 hours and most under 1 hour. Overall my experience with Zachary was good and he did an excellent job. However the firm as a whole was very pricey and for a relatively painless divorce were both parties agreed on many things it did cost well above average.

Todd Tallerday was a very professional attorney who was able to walk us navigate through the wilderness of Bankruptcy. He listed all of our creditors, and walked us through every step. He was at our meeting of creditors and answered creditors questions with the calm he displayed all of the times. We were able to retain our property. All of the paperwork was filed in a timely manner. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone who is contemplating bankruptcy.

During one of the darkest moments of my life I received a form letter in the mail from Mr. Tallerday regarding the issue I was facing... and for some unknown reason I decided to contact him. I was extremely sad, anxious, humiliated and fearful of the situation I was responsible for, however, upon meeting Mr. Tallerday and retaining him as my lawyer all of my feelings of trepidations were immediately erased and replaced with the knowledge that I had come in contact with an attorney who did not judge me, nor the poor judgment that I was guilty of. Mr. Tallerday's level of professionalism, expertise, and compassion are what defines him as an amazing attorney and exceptional gentleman. Mr. Tallerday's presence in my life-when despair overcame every aspect of my existence-gave me reason to believe that I was not alone and with his legal representation would one day be free of the self-imposed burden I had created

Mr. Felton is a great man; this world needs more men like him. I've been stuck between a rock and a hard place the past week and a half, and Mr. Felton has done so much to help. Although he's not currently my attorney, he has still helped me a lot with advice and the best course of action to take. My husband was sitting in jail stressing over the fact that his court appointed attorney wouldn't answer any calls or emails from me or calls from him. Mr. Felton explained everything to me that I asked, and even took time out of his day (after hours might I add) to stop by the jail to explain things to my husband. I was a juvenile at the time that I had Larry representing me (court appointed). I honestly should've got my own lawyer, cause not only was this man completely unprofessional, but he truly seems to only care about money. He showed up 20 minutes late to my court date, would twist my words, and in my opinion he would hardly listen. He does not care about his clients, will most likely favor whatever the court wants to do. He did not fight for me at all and if anything he fought against me. I do NOT recommend him as a lawyer.

Was looking at a total of 5 years and I paid larry $1500 to take my case on. He did absolutely nothen for me. The plea was to take the felony and drop the misdemeanor he didn't even try to plea with them to get any lower charges. He told me to take the deal and do the jail time ext.. and in fact actully put me in a worse situation. Cause he pushed my case to circuit court which caused more issues down the road. I fired him that court date hired a much better lawyer from down by Farmington hills. (Micheal komorn) and Micheal was able to get everything dropped. Due to a illegal search and seizure. (Which is what I told larry) his exact words was (there was to much there to say you weren't "its clear") My new lawyer listened to what I had to say and my side of the case. He was ready and on top of this case! I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIRING LARRY UNLESS YOU ARE TRYING TO PAY HIM TO DO NOTHEN FOR YOU!

Felt forced to tap out,, so I settled,, thought it was at least over with,,, but it is not- asked Elliot where we stood on the retainer and he says he dont know,, but don’t worry,, I’ll give you a bill at the end,, transparency issues!! Deposition was cancelled, he failed to notify me,,so I can’t be prepared, and don’t know what’s coming,, I feel hustled by both attorneys colluding on the down low, stacked the deck against me, tricked me into settling for a low ball amount,, thought we were done at least,,,but they are keeping those billable hours going- the price ain’t worth the cost! Super shitty attorney- there is more to mention as well,,, but I hope you get the point- I do not recommend. Should have never hired him,, and several times should have sent him packin,,shot myself in the foot with him. Very poor communication and if he doesn’t like your questions he gets extremely mad and explodes on you- questions like- how’s my retainer holdin up- he don’t know,,,

No return phone calls. No notice of Friend of the court hearings. Didn't make sure that the ex-wife was responsible for paying for the property that was awarded to her so I got stuck with paying for something that I didn't possess. How much more needs to be said about the lack of professionalism? The worst part was the lying about my case from this guy. He told me that if I lost the divorce hearing that he would take on the appeal for a set fee. After I lost, the whole conversation seemed to be a mystery to him. I wanted to toss him in the street like he did to me. Surprisingly he still had the audacity to bill me several thousand more dollars after paying him in excess of $14,000 for a divorce and simple custody arraignment, the custody was never a point of contention. The ex and I live in the same town and never had a dispute over any of the child issues until he didn't inform me of the hearing and I got the screw job. The most help actually came from the Friend of the court ladies, once I went and explained that I was never notified of the hearing, they showed me proof of mailing to him but he never let me know of it. I could go on with so much but I think you get the point......RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN to any other attorney.

DO NOT GO TO THIS ATTORNEY! I am an attorney myself and I am left speechless by Jim Pagels' "representation". He took thousands from me, and did not file ONE THING despite being retained to handle an eviction + money recovery. He apparently went through the retainer plus more doing "legal research" and making phone calls. Nothing was resolved. Nothing was filed. Not one dollar was recovered. THEN he asked for more money, and has filed a small claims action against me when I cut off the gravy train. He will rip you off and get zero resolution for you.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
