I was a single mom of three boys wen I slipped on ice and shattered my wrist, and had to have surgery. Not able to work for a few months, and hospital bills, plus general monthly expenses where adding up fast. John and his staff went out of their way to help me get my clam filed and settled fast as they could. They return your phone calls right away, and always kept in touch with me to let me know what was going on. John Cotton and his staff are truly AMAZING people!!!!

I hired Cotton Law after suffering injuries in an automobile accident. My own insurance company was not forthcoming in what would happen or how the process would go, and after months of getting the run around I made an appointment with John. Cotton Law’s entire staff is very welcoming and down to earth. They took the time to answer all my questions and explained how the process would go and what to expect. They were prompt, and honest with me while working diligently to get my case settled! I have and will continue to refer this law firm to anyone needing an attorney!

I have been acquainted with Tom Lubnau for many years. He has successfully guided us through ordinary and unfortunate legal events. However, one night my husband suffered a life altering accident which left him with a traumatic brain injury, multiple broken bones and in a coma. When the sun came up I called Tom’s office for legal documents and asked for representation. Tom and his firm stepped up for the fight of our family’s lifetime. Within six months we encountered over l.3 million dollars of medical bills, were having to sell our home, land, horses, life-long belongings and I had to quit my teaching job to become a caregiver. Tom enlisted two other lawyers and together they became a “team” that responded to the needs of our family. My husband’s accident took place in a prominent hotel and resulted in our filing a lawsuit. Each and every avenue of the legal process was explained to me and if a face-to-face meeting was needed Tom and team members commuted to my town so I wouldn’t have to leave my husband who needed twenty-four hour care. Tom’s genuine concern, constant communication and thorough investigation of the facts were instrumental in giving me confidence throughout this desperate situation All timelines were met, research conducted, witnesses interviewed, experts located as well as analysis and verification conducted regarding medical facts. Development of our case resulted in ongoing changes over nearly a three year legal process but Tom’s extensive knowledge of the law, acute competency, pervasive experience and a dedicated law team guided us to a positive conclusion.

Mr. Norris earns an exceptional rating from me, as he has the keen balance of representing you as a client and inserting his knowledge as a professional into your case. He is respectful and compassionate, he acknowledges your goals and will not stop until you are satisfied. He covers a wide range of cases and well versed in all. If he does not feel that he is the top candidate for your job, he will not take it on and he will refer you. Otherwise, he will do a fantastic job representing your needs.

I think enough time has passed for me to give an honest review. I hired this team in a panic, never been in trouble with the law before and I got scared when my public defender gave me someone else’s paperwork. I will say the front desk guy and the private investigator seem like good guys especially the front desk. But my lawyer(s) did not give a rip about me. The first lady I talked to we read through my paperwork together and immediately she was getting stuff wrong. Said I couldn’t have contact with the opposite party even though we have a business together and it clearly read ‘will cease at z’s request’ (we where both being charged mine was a lesser offense). That should have been my first sign. Anyway I got pushed over to my full time attorney and he looked at my case for a second maybe 2 and told me to use my deferred. I told him I was innocent so getting it dropped would be awesome and if not I would like to fight it just out of principle if it came to it. He said something along the lines of ‘sticking to grantees’. I tried asking him questions about my case but he came off a little annoyed that he was dealing with me like I hadn’t paid $6,000 for there services. Anyway he represented me in a call and it took him almost 3 days to get back with me. I asked him what it was about and he said it was about his thoughts and what the prosecuting attorney was thinking and they planned another meeting to talk about it. Basically nothing advanced and I was a little in the dark he still maintained that I should use my deferral. I later had some questions and I could not get ahold of him. I talked to the front desk man and he was great as always and I asked to pass on my questions I never ended up getting a response back. Later on the other guy being charged called me and said he talked to the prosecuting attorney and he said that if I drop my charges against him that he could do the same and put this behind us. This happened at 11 A.M. and I didn’t hear anything from my attorney tell 3:30 P.M. the next day. He told me the good news and I was like great can we roll this over into a retainer or how is this going to work? He said that they strive for getting things like this ‘dismissed’. I said ‘okay how about getting this expunged?’ He told me that would be a separate charge. So in total he took one call on my behalf that didn’t do any to my knowledge then called me and told me something I already knew and tried to take credit for it. In summary I felt like a number day 1, they are slow to respond if at all, they won’t fight for you if you have a easy out like a deferral, and after 1 phone call and some paperwork they are going to charge you 6k and are not willing to work with you on getting the charges expunge. Which ok fair point I did sign a paper agreeing to that in the beginning. I am more upset about the lack of an effort on there part.

Day is too caught up in her own personal problems to help you with yours. She is constantly out of town in Cheyenne, on vacation and responds weeks later on her own convenience. I would highly recommend staying as far away from it as possible. Her busy selfish schedule delays every process and it is always late in submitting required documents. Her integrity is very poor and is known to lie to everyone. Judges are not fond of her so stay away.

Went through a divorce with a different lawyer and that was a disaster and really screwed up so I went to DaNece to try to see about fixing things. She looked through and she said it definitely could use some change because things were not correct both with filing some things more than once and also some things weren't filed at all. She has since fixed everything that needed done and continues to help when my ex continues to take me to court. It has been a stressful drawn out situation but she always does everything she can to make things as easy as possible and she always cares about my kids and myself. I've even had to contact her on holidays dealing with custody situations and she has taken the time to help me. I couldn't be happier with everything she has done for me!

Excellent in both professionalism and experienced in the law. My experience was exceptionally great. A very well organized firm, experienced and compassionate. Mr. Gregory Thomas was very forthright with expectations of my case and continued to work with purpose .He was very thorough and communicated with me throughout the process. He knows what he’s talking about and has a good working relationship with many attorneys and colleagues in the court system. All in all, I had a positive experience and I highly recommend this company, especially for your Family Law needs. The price for his services are comparable and conservative so if you want someone who will listen, and be on your side Mr. Thomas is it!

Do not hire! Caused me to lose money on divorce settlement and does not know the law! Allowed divorce settlement to be delayed which did NOT have to be. Confronted him about billing questions, had inflated charges, mistakes made on important documents including wrong client name AND SSN! Stopped responding to emails and did not call me back. Did NOT credit my account of multiple payments made on time. I am currently taking my case before the Wyoming Bar. Waste of money and time!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
